Why make the captain rank.

Seriously! I'll do 5 years as a Captain doing Mobile Field Forces. Those details are a joke!

Does this statement still hold true?

How often are Captains getting hit with these details?

Yupp! They're going to be a mix of either the protests or all-out in the more violent commands

Yes. Its already begun. Not for Captains. Below the rank of Captain.Captains are needed for 6X2 coverage , duties and MFF for protests ONLY.

Not sure if you're just trying to troll, if so then carry on.

But if you're actually providing information then I'm shocked you would write that.

-i heard every other month....... Lol Nobody told you that, simply put

-They are preparing for Summer - What does that have anything to with promotions lol

-After Summer list will slow down - Unless you're on the city council public safety budget committee, you're posting rubbish lol. It's all in relation to attrition, vacancies, new hires and future projections (hence the large list). Then poof a number is spit out and there you have it

Hopefully you're just trolling, if not, my good man it's time to start exploring vacations and some good beach bars or something

I Imagine promos would slow from may to August. It's the summer, we got protests coming up, political conventions coming up in other states that will cause mayhem here Etc. we'll see how it plays out

Why make captain? To have a shieeet schedule and ruin your family life if you have children. Only good if you have no kids or a crane to put you on a Monday-Friday only days.

A top pay Capt still earns about $40K more than an LT. And before you say OT, not everyone has OT available and who's to say its gonna be there when you're ready to retire.

Good point. Always bank on what you have (Your base salary without OT). Go for the pay raise

What are the rules for overtime in cash for Captains?

180 per year straight time cash until you reach top pay. After that it's all time.

180 your first two years. 120 your third year.

 Disagree.
our profession is no longer popular. Gone are the days of 1500+ classes every 6 month.
those days are over.
as more impact classes retire downtown will allocate more $ to stave off manpower shortages. Top pay LTs right now make as much as top pay CPT if not more

Its all about how much $ you make at the end of the year.
as a Lt I was making more than full birds for at least 5-6 years and all of them have less $ in their ITHP than me.

Stop comparing apples to oranges. For you to make more than an inspector youre working over 60 hours more a month than I am. On top of that Ill make just as much as you w a take home car and msking 60 hours time. So congrats on killing the overtime your last year while Im vacationing across the globe msking your same salary w my 3 to 4 years on the book. If you cant deal w executive life I get it but stop thinking lt rank perk wise compared to the executive rank bc I promise you it does not.

 LOL.
3 years in the books=6000 hrs which means you worked 4000hrs for time while I was showeling $ into my investments.
as I said earlier I made more than any inspector whom I know personally. My ITHP blows them out the water while they had a take home car and 60hrs in time And 3-4 years in the books

Personally, Ive been an exec little less than a year and I am retiring for private sector(took the rank just for that purpose) in my case, that was the best perk of cpt rank and thats where it ends.

If youre in a good spot as a Lt making 30 more hrs of ot pass the promotion. Especially if youre close to retirement and Sat/sun rdo. I should have stayed a Lt. Look people will say you can get out of the game if you want but good luck. Under this regime they will keep you hostage on patrol unless youre a made man, forget a hook or crane that no longer works. Capts rank is for longevity however the problem is its not as easy as it used to be and finding a gig is hard, they wont let you out. As a Capt youre treated worse than a PPO and scrutinized to the max. 20 is plenty coming from someone who wanted to do 25-30.

Too long and yes patrol. Youll be stuck here for a long time, getting out isnt easy. Dont believe anyone else who tells you it is. Btw hsg and tb is way worse with hours and duties but might be easier to get out. Goodluck, all the capts I personally know want to retire and pull the plug earlier than expected lol never seen it this bad. Only job where the higher you go the worse youre treated

I will echo this too. I knew being an executive had its negatives but i didnt think it would be this bad. My family of non cops cant understand how you can go from Sat/Sun off to Mon/Thur off with 20 years on lol.

Comparing lt rank to captain by saying as a lt you can make more isnt really a fair comparison. Its a true statement with a big caveat. Youre still working a tremendous amount of hours to make up that gap. So qol sucks as xo but Id argue 60 months overtime a month can suck just as well. In the end each rank as a unique set of positive and negatives that will benefit some while being detrimental to others. I dont defend being an executive vs staying as a lt. I just try to not lean one way or the other bc ppl read these forums to get the facts on whether a rank will work for them. Bashing either decision really does no service to them.

Not bashing just telling ppl what I wish someone would have told me. Lt with ot in a gig is the way to go. If youre a Lt on patrol  then yes take the promotion.

Get off patrol to see a better qol as a captain. Theres still a huge list remaining of ppl that will take your place. It will require a grenade onto ur career but once you truly dont care its very nice. All I can say are there are spots available to go. You just have to find a way to do it. And yes I know how hard that can be

Heres the biggest caveat for those of us who are/were overtime mercenaries since old academy days-it doesnt bother us. Especially if you are in the gig where you can start your tour early, workout, do some Teams meetings, get your OT, and still be home before dinner
Health, family, investments- 3 most important things as you get older and wiser in this profession. Become exec if you want move thru the ranks and become higher-ups darling, or if you want to transition to private sector.

the treatment of young execs will not get any better any time soon. I can see that even execs with TOJ will be treated like shit.  The term more with less was coined during Bloomberg administration but it wasnt really used back then. Nowadays they are really squeezing all the juices across all ranks.

Time on the job means nothing as a Capt.

The new XO with 25 years on gets treated the same as the new XO with 13 on the job.

As someone whos really struggling on decision to go up further, I just wanna say thanks to any input given so far.

My gut says dont do it, but moving up was always the goal. As you get older, hard to see the benefit.

Im in the same boat, if I take the next promotion I will have to endure being an executive for 5+ years (which will eventually work in my favor) but I dont know if I want to torture myself. I dont like this job enough to care about all the administrative work being crammed down our throats. Tough call to make.
