This Dr guy has no valid intel. Hes the guy in precinct who heard from a guy and hopes you tell two people on the job his fake intel so it will instantly go viral and become a Breaking News chain text. he needs to get hobbies and get off this thing thats for sure.

The dude is never going to retire. He just keeps filing for retirement in order to run some built up time. Professional scammer!

The only voluntary demotions ive ever seen was cop to ta/ssa or capt to lt.

No sugarcoating it being an xo in psb is not easy. Many last minute notifications as if you were a rookie cop all over again. If you have a delicate work/life balance this rank will throw a huge wrench into your lifestyle coming from the LT rank. Ive heard transit and housing are better but the schedule still sucks.

PSB gets you promoted faster! However, each boro runs things different. Lots of duties can be swapped guys. Its not that bad. All the other stuff is purely administrative (meetings, in house investigations, etc.). Hopefully this list will be big enough to change some of the coverage issues we have.

At this point I'll take the promotion and if things get crappy look for a dead end route. Self-demoting is always an option lmao

Never heard of a cop getting a self demotion like that, thats crazy but I guess not everyone can handle the work or has the ability to leave patrol

Money is only one part of the equation. Some people have young children and family is just as important. Great you make more money down the road but your ever see your kids... The promotion is not as clear cut.

Cop to Sgt = No brainer
Sgt to Lt = That's the whole point for wanting to take an exam in the first place
Lt to Capt = Really depends on your situation job and personal life

I'm going to roll the dice and take the promotion. Can always give it back if it doesn't work-out

At top pay lt making 30 hours I hear the first 3 years you lose about 50 grand a year. Financially why is this capt rank better? Anyone?

Depends on the situation. Not every Lt makes 30 hrs a month and even if you do what are the chances you may loose that gig? Gigs aren't forever... Would suck to loose a gig near your retirement goal and mess up your last 12 months for retirement.

What are you talking about? You sound like every cliche statement made by anyone.

1st - why do u want to be a cop, you can die out there.

2nd - why do u want to be a sergeant, its too much responsibilities.

3rd - why do u want to make captain, when you can stay a LT and do 30 hours a months and make more money and have a better home life.

Do you truly believe that Captains are doing 30+ hours a month in OT as an XO/CO ? You do know after the 1st year captains have 8 hour tours right? How many times PER MONTH do you think your Avg. Captain is FORCED to stay at work? I rather deal with the argument of going to a Unit rather than a Patrol/PSA/TD command because the Unit lifestyle allows you more flexibility.

people talk about quality of life then add 30 hours per month. haha what a joke.

i have kids, thats why I'm getting promoted. Its not about me, its about them. Sacrifices must be made. No one said you should do 35-40 years and never see your family. All of us can retire in 20. Work those 20 years so they pay you Back! What other career you think stops at 20? 22? 25? Stop it. You dont sound like am ambitious winner. work hard, play hard, dont act like your in NARCO or the Squad grinding out.

this is about 45k extra and maximizing before tapping out WITHOUT DOING OT LIKE A SLAVE.

if i wanted 30hrs a month i would stay a Det in the Squad.

If it's all about the money, LCD or LSA with overtime make much more than a Capt. They make chiefs pay. Numbers don't lie and don't have to have the responsibility of being an executive

I dont Kiss @Ss and will not be fortunate enough to get a spot like that. I love how some of you people just throw words out there without thinking of the reality and practicality of what your saying.

If i can hit the lotto this website will be irrelevant.

Whats in MY control is a promotional exam to Captain.

let me struggle and live at work to make what a captain makes to check-out and go home.

Why dont we all just aim for DT1 with 40-50hrs of OT in some places and make more money then Sgts and Lts.

thats how ridiculous it sounds to me when people say stay LT and get the money and get a spot to get 30hrs.

stop it. And stop avoiding responsibility. That does not scare me and it shouldnt scare you either.

you want to raise your kids in this world to be afraid of responsibility? Stop it.

well said. I think whats been exposed is for a Captain exam now, there is no school with its finger on pulse except The Key and Rising Star. 200 and change passing for the largest sitting in years (around 750) isnt great. Last exam you studied a bit you passed. Period. I literally know guys who studied a couple months and crammed for last one and passed no issue. This exam was brutal. Period. List of 200 though is gonna take 4 years. 270 was 5+ even with all the people running for exits.

Got it wrong. Plenty of Capts with split RDOs and long hrs. Why do you think the avg Capt retires with 1yr or more on the books?!? All Im saying is the trade off and benefit isnt as clear cut as other ranks. With that being said I am taking the promotion and seeing where things land

Now youre just arguing to argue, clearly a female - unmarried without kids too.

if you think Everything i said previously is Wrong you are a lost cause.

split RDOs does not mean you cannot see your children.

maybe its because your too Busy listening to people and you dont actually know Captains that you are Actual Friends with to filter out how it works with 99% of captains.

ill make it easier, yes, run from challenges, run from responsibilities, stay a LT where you can make 30hrs OT cash, youll see your family way more and work til you have 30yrs on this job.

thats what you want to read.

Your worried about being home to cook for your man. Hell be okay trust me.

Focus on the remaining 25% you have left And finish strong.

lol Dude you prob wouldnt talk to a perp on the street like that so check yourself tuff guy. My points are valid. Weekends off and  two days off in a row are how you keep the wife happy and enjoy your kids. All Im saying is theres a huge trade off for a thankless job... For those who dont have a life outside this job its a no brainer, maybe you fall in that category but the rest of us dont.

wouldnt talk to a perp like that on the street? WTF ??? I said Facts. Dont be sensitive. Get a personality.

AND - youre worried about Pats on the back to keep you motivated. More signs of weakness.

You think this is the only thankless job? if youre actually in the streets you would know theres probably 1 Thank You per day. Even if its a crackhead saluting you. Who cares about thankful job. this is about you and your life. You and your family.
sanitation, nurses, taxi drivers, public transportation workers, youre bagel cashier, they must all get lots of love from customers since you think Our Job is thankless.

Clearly, you have reading comprehension problems from my last couple of posts.

Well said. The Key did an excellent job with the re-writes of the Captains exams. They were right on. Their content was very similar and prepared their students to succeed on exam day! The Rising Star questions also gave the students the edge. You cant lose with them. This is a bottom heavy list. Congrats to all that passed.

If you're humpin it as a platoon commander then its probably a no brainer or if you have 10-17/18 years on, Id say take the rank. But, depending how much time you have on and if youre in a good spot where you make your own hours youd be sacrificing a certain quality of life and each person has their own value or price with that. Id say the promotion is best suited for those not married and/or have kids because they expect you to be a company man even when that same company will shove it you know where in a heartbeat. Being a company man comes at a cost and if you value your family it might not be worth it for a person with obligations outside of work to give that up. People dont really understand how huge working the miscellaneous chart is and its a tough call for some to give that up. Money isnt everything. There are plenty of people who make a ton of money and are miserable. I commend that Captain for demoting himself. Plenty of people talk about it but never go through with it. Im sure by no means was that an easy decision, but he had the guts to do it and he did it for his own reasons and Im sure family had a lot to do with it. Those on the fence, remember you can take the promotion and always give it back. Best of luck to everyone.

has the captain rank always been undesirable or questionable ?

of course if you are a LT with the money then I get it or if you are close to retirement, but Has the captain rank always been like this or was there a year in which the contract or role got changed drastically?

The captains I know all tell me that they love their gig.
