Why make the captain rank.

Give me good reasons to make Capt? I see and met a lot of unhappy captains. With the new command Qualifications how does one get motivated to make the captain rank. I have 17+ yrs on.  So to get the max salary I would have to stay at least 25 yrs

No more chasing ot which can come or go at the drop of a dime, your pension/overage will go up, 8hr tours, potential cat 1 Veh.

Chasing OT, you are never off, CAT 1 car means you better get into work if news worthy stuff happens. Constant community board meetings and being scrutinized for crime going up but cant spend a single dollar over budget. COs that want that full bird micromanaging the command staff and when the COs not in its all on you. IDK, Im still gonna take it tho. Lol

I can walk out the door in less than 3 yrs. if I make Capt I wouldnt make it until my 20th yr. so I would have to stay for 25/26 yrs to increase my pension. I dont really care for a Dept car to be honest.  Is giving up your life beneficial at a certain point in your career ? I dont have 11-12 yrs on.

You are talking about being a CO.  Bc XO does not stress out that hard unless they are trying to make a name for themselves and impress others. My xo gives zero shits, goes to his random meetings, gets told do better and says ok. Not stressing out. Not chasing after people for checkpoints. He will be a captain for rest of his career and he's fine with that. 200k and take home car. I'm sure first year or 2 sucks but better after that.

The pay... Almost 200k at top pay will def boost the pension. After the job, retired captain looks better on a resume vs retired Lt.

Take home car definitely adds to the salary with the crazy gas prices.

No, every capt (CO's etc) i spoke to at the puzzle palace got their CAT1 designation taken away and now only have CAT2 designation... huge blow to the guys who live in long island and upstate.

Was the previous expansion of the cat 1 cars part of contract talk or just something the city did to sweeten the pot bc no one was taking the tests?

Never in the contract. Gentlemen's agreement Under Bratton you can see all the contracts under labor Relations. It doesnt mention Captains having CAT1 cars. COs and XOs of PSB/TB/HB & DB Zone commanders/COs still have CAT1 designations. For now cityhall Requested a reduction of CAT1 citywide and the NYPD took them away from Administration Capts including those designated COs.

Very true on all aspects but details dont last forever and nor does OT. Only way to guarantee those last year digits is to be a Capt. I still dont see anyone giving back the rank..

There are plenty of detail spots. (Non CO/XO). If you are in the game more than a year or so it's by choice.

They have been cutting cars to admin spots and some gigs. Not sure about new xos or zone cmdr Spots, I think they are still good to go.

they need to leave the in-basket out and do a straight up multiple question test on the pg. If they dont I have a feeling they will have a repeat of a disaster exam similar to the one that idiot Capt wrote a few yrs back. That in-basket takes a lot of time to create and fact check, its not in line with this fast paced time frame

Damn, I'm having second thoughts about taking this exam. I know the money is good but is it worth the trade off? Any one out there able to give some motivating reasons? I have two young kids and not sure about the lifestyle change. I'd like to be able to have a normal life... Are the crazy hrs only the first year in rank or just crappy the entire time as a Capt?

Only issue with that is you will most likely not get rank (if youre ok with that). From my understanding if you want inspector or Chief you need to be a CO

Can't have it all.  Time in rank still provides a DI, Inspector, DC pension.
