has the captain rank always been undesirable or questionable ?

of course if you are a LT with the money then I get it or if you are close to retirement, but Has the captain rank always been like this or was there a year in which the contract or role got changed drastically?

The captains I know all tell me that they love their gig.

Yep. Dont get fooled. Captain rank is the BEST rank! Period !

Doctor, hows it the best rank when youve never experienced it?

 SMFH,.

In my case it was because i would have to kill myself working OT the last 12 months for the best possible pension. As a Capt, I can burn my time and my pension wont be affected. Yeah the first year sucks,  but you have to look at the bigger picture.

Why only the first year ? Do they gain seniority quickly or something ?

Does unpaid leave (like childcare) you buy back count towards the time in rank needed to be eligible for promotion?

They say the best rank or title on any job is the one you currently have , there are always good things and bad things when taking on a new role or title .
As far as the pension goes , well we live in a society were everyone is always concerned about making the most pension while forgetting to live your life while you are young and strong. If you can enjoy life more now while getting a decent  pension at the end then maybe staying in rank will be the better option .

If you have a gig, in line for lsa, make your own schedule, have a family where kids are doing multiple after school activities and you want to be at every one of them I doubt promotion makes sense. Ive seen people go the self demotion route. Could always test the waters and see how it goes. But is there a time frame you have to do that in? Or if 2 years after being promoted you are like this is an absolute garbage rank and is only getting worse, can you self demote?

This is becoming less and less applicable as Tier 3 MOS start to become the majority on this job. Tier 3 people dont have a last 12 month FAS. They have a choice between best 3 consecutive calendar years (they choose) or last 36 months. Thats it. Which means if you have a tier 3 LT whos at top pay, they can lock in 3 good years and run as much time at the end without messing up their pension. Would make no sense for a LT in that scenario to promote, take a pay cut, work longer for free, and take daily poundings from whatever egomaniacal boro executive they happen to fall under.

Even with tier 3 guys they have to bust their ass for 3 consecutive years with overtime to get a good fas, even more reason to be a captain and walk in the door making 200k. Not to mention if any passed this time around they will be in rank for most likely 10 years and retire with inspectors pension.

You can go back to LT during your probationary period. After you become permanent in rank, you cant go back (to LT). Not many people go back (if ever). Every rank has its perks (no more memo books, OT, take home car, etc.). To me, Lieutenant is the best rank on this job. But the job is changing fast. Ill let you guys tell it ,is it really the best rank ??????

With all these man power issues LT is just a glorified sgt right now. At least where I work its always 1 sgt and 1 LT so you are constantly running around whenever you arent on the desk.
