Hoping for at least another 50. With all this budget crap and the academy on hold ... who knows though.

Promotions were done in the last few months to finish up the fiscal year. A july promotion would be a great sign.

I'm hoping they keep it going at 50 or more. Now with all the retiring, they will need sgts.

Nothing is slated for headcount drop. Seems like trivial funding will be shifted out of department. Expect tight OT restrictions. 1B over 4yrs is the projection. 250m a yr which can be made to look good on paper but without sacrificing headcount. Political nonsense.

The New York City Council is moving to cut $1 billion from the NYPDs budget, according to sources with knowledge of the matter, a potentially historic turning point in law enforcement in the Big Apple.
The massive cut to the NYPDs annual $6 billion budget would come from removing functions like school safety and homeless outreach from the police; reducing the size of the force, from 36,000 to 33,000, through a hiring freeze and by not replacing officers who retire; and limiting overtime pay.

Going to be very interesting...massive retirements?? Lower head count may mean fewer Sgts as well though

smaller headcount = less supervisors

As long as Sgts continue retiring, we can expect continuous bmocs.

Also, the removal if the $1 billion may not appear as big as it seems, since the rumor is that School Safety will become School Resource Officers under the department of Ed. Traffic is rumored to be removed from NYPD, along with a few NYPD units such as Homeless Outreach, and YCOs. Along with OT reduction.

Coupling all these together may not hurt promotions. Many people will be losing gigs and going back to patrol though.

Headcount going from 36,000 to 33,000 is a disaster for promotions

This. If anyone remembers 2008 when academy classes were 250 people for 6 months then promotions dropped dramatically too.

I can tell you that no one knows what will happen. I dont think budget/personnel cuts can ever be good for promotions. It certainly will not help it. As stated I can see patrol being beefed up w these units that may disappear

I dont know what will happen but point of reference to Brooklyn bacon, during the financial crisis promotions for Sgt were about 250-300 a year as opposed to 400-450 like it is now. Also, if this whole buy back thing is real, which remains to be seen, you could see a huge amount of retirements and theyll get their 3,000 reduction real quick. A lot of what ifs

I really dont know much, but the talk of buy outs doesnt make sense to me. If the city cuts overtime, I mean for years to come, youll see an exodus of ppl. No real need for the buyout. I know an official letter was sent to diblasio to consider it so well see. I remember seeing something with sergeants being only rank that correlate to number of cops . 1 sgt to every 8 cops?? If that is indeed true lowering cop count will obviously effect number of Sgts

This list was made larger for some reason and one rumor was to make rank of sgt more diverse. Now additionally no money means no test due to the cost of these test along with school being closed. This all adds up to most probable an extension of current list is my guess. I can see cuts but I think promotions will continue and the rate of people retire is out weighing hired classes.

Can you get promoted with a past charges?

Yes but depending on how recent/serious it is you will have to go to the board and possibly be skipped over.

Nothing yet. They are saying next week personnel is supposed to come in. Obviously everything is up in the air because of the riots. Weve been doing 12 hour tours basically since the beginning. Not much class time in the beginning. Started to get a little more classroom time this last week. And the instructors also have not heard anything about another class for July

IF the 1200 expected recruits enter the academy in a few weeks, this will tell the tale of which course this list will go. As of this time, there is no mention of reduced headcount in our ranks, other than a slight hold in academy dates. Tentatively as of now the academy is still a GO.

The proposal by the city council is a hiring freeze, attrition, and reduction of the overall headcount from 36K to 33K. So either you havent been reading the paper, or your telling me that this is all political posturing? Do you know something that we dont?

This is 100% Political Posturing the whole country is on the Defund Police train right now, its only natural that the biggest Lib city on the East Coast would jump on the bandwagon. Just my opinion they are staying on the good side of their Constituents with this Budget Cut BS they know the NYPDs biggest and if we are all being honest only strength is the manpower. They keep saying cut us from 36,000 to 33,000 dont be shocked if its a big group of civilian MOS jobs and not Uniformed Members they were looking to cut anyway, this whole Covid situation just showed the city how easily almost all of these civilian jobs can be done remotely from home, dont think thats something they will fully take advantage of by cutting the amount of these jobs and save money on people they actually need in person at Municipal buildings. Again just my opinion but I think promotions should be ok going forward but i guess well see come July.

So the retirements are there. 20 people put their papers in today including 2 LTs and 8 Sgts. The real
Issue is whats up with this head count. Yougonow swears that a recruit class is going in. Im very skeptical. Someone here has to work in the academy or know someone who does

Does yougonow work on the city council???? Bc between them and the mayor will be the only ones to determine if a class goes in. Of course academy and cad are preparing for a class, it means nothing without the funding.

As of TODAY the class was a GO. I go day by day guys. No crystal ball. Even Shea doesn't want a headcount reduction is not agreeing to it at all as of TODAY. What tomorrow brings, who knows. But again. Day by day is what all of us have to look forward to in life and career.

Oh it's true. It's damn true! 50 or more. 15 lts is also a strong possibility as well. The recruit class is still a go. About 750 is the number now. That can change.

You go, you are 100 percent right. Pls dont take this the wrong way, but cad is preparing for a class Bc nypd wants one. But this is 100 percent tied to the budget. If no money is given no class will occur no matter our wants.

The city wants nothing more than to get rid of T2 people and replace with cheaper rookies. That in itself is savings galore.

Very very true. But your forgetting about the optics of putting in an academy class now. Personal opinion is the optics of it will prevent it from occurring even if the needs are there. But we shall see

While that may be or may not be true they still have 8-9 years before the last of the T2 people are eligible to retire

It's not many.... but you have to count the cadets and prior school safety agents who sued the Dept/City .... won and brought into T2. So it maybe another 10 year but it's not many of them. Also anyone who had prior service and took promotional exams prior to 2009 are considered T2. I am guessing another 10.
