The Truth

Not to be negative Nancy, but I think many are in denial right now. With everything going on, this list may not even reach 1500. Who knows when the hell the next bmoc will be and anyone thinking the job will put big classes once they start again gives the NYPD too much credit. Its sad.

Not trying to shoot anyone down. 1500 means I dont make it. Just trying to be realistic as possible here.

Thoughts ?

I think your scenario is possible, but in my view not likely. I see a lot of people comparing this to the 2008 recession and the decrease in promotions because of it. While this is a time of extreme market volatility, this may end up being more a dramatic correction than recession.

Also, manpower is stretched thin, and there is more a need for supervisors now with body cams, FTO supervisors, etc. Id also imagine that retirements are up, or will soon be. In my unit, known for its huge ot, there is a dry spell. If I was trying to pad my pension, or wait it out a few more years, Id be getting the **** out now with all this virus mayhem going on. What is the alternative? Wait until this is over, take the huge hit in overtime, and then try to work my way back up? No way.

Look, the economy is recovering. Despite the country being shutdown, the market is holding steady and even rising most days after that huge dip. My only concern would be the Citys own financial outlook, but Im sure Trump will make sure its running smooth quickly again. I foresee a promotional freeze until midsummer, then a few larger catch up classes. If anything, the next promotional exams just got pushed back.

I can see retirements go up as im sure the city will try to save money through ot.

However i can also see people staying as the job market doesnt look so hot right now.

The main thing to look for and gauge is how many recruits are going in. If they slow down hirings substantially then promotions will too.

But right now if you, your family, and coworkers stay healthy then everything else is gravy.

The list will resume once everything goes back to normal. That means schools, courts, training etc etc. I was also thinking if the Dept gets desperate enough for supervisors they could try distance learning . Its a long shot but how bizarre things have gotten I wouldnt be surprised by anything at this point.

Nobody knows anything for sure. I just want to have everybody stay safe and healthy and screw promotions at this point

The city has a massive budget deficient Bc of this epidemic and spending all its money on finally fixing the homeless issue. The Mayor is to sign a Mayoral Order today to disband the NYPD (except capt and above) in order to save money. We are all being let go and our pensions withheld. The State Police will take over NYC with their current man power (no new hires, the citizens of NYC say we dont need more police, just less). Finest should be down in a few hours.

48 people have entered a 3 week BMOC. Let's just hope they keep it where there is no mentoring and a 3 week BMOC and the list will move.

As of 3/30/18 a newly promoted sgt would make @ $99K with 5-9 years on. This includes holiday and uniform. Does not include night diff or community policing.
