Coronavirus

Is this true they are cancelling all promotions  until further notice? That would really suck

I havent heard that, but lets say its true. Eventually they would have to resume promotions... and In the meantime vacancies would just keep piling up. So when they did resume promotions itll be mass promotions. Like 80 every month. Dont sweat it. Still a year and 9 months left on the list.

I highly doubt they would cancel promotions over the virus. They may make it closed to just the people being promoted though.

I heard the same exact. Inviting 1000 people into that packed room doesnt sound like a great idea at the moment.

Damn I heard this today and was hoping it was insanity. But apparently others have heard the same thing. Reasoning was that all extra funding will be spent on the virus and that promotions is a bad look. For sake I hope thats wrong.

This thing has become beyond ridiculous and the media caused this wide spread panic. Just don't look at your deferred comp, you might lose it.

Cant foresee that happening. The governor just announced that this out real should be around for 9 months. theyre not stoping promotions for that long.

Ok Im in bmoc now its not official but they are strongly considering a private promotion at the academy but not official yet. Also hearing rumors no further mentoring or promotions until the concerns ease up. Just wanted to help!

We have much bigger things to worry about than a promotion right now.

With this happening there prob wont be a new Sgt exam given anytime soon. If they freeze promotions would that mean that the current list also gets frozen (list expiration)?

Who cares. This will subside in a month or so. Then they will do 2 8x sized class and all caught up.

Everyone relax and worry about keeping all of us and our loved ones safe, this too shall pass. Even if they hold promotions for an extended period of time, (which I dont think they will, maybe a few months at most) they will quickly make them up when the time comes. The vacancies will be there. Coronavirus isnt stopping anyone from retiring, if anything it will probably increase retirements. Especially if 12 hour tours happens for an extended period.

As far as someone asking about freezing the list, I dont think they can/will. The list is good for up to 4 years but technically they only are legally required to keep it active for one year. So I dont think a freeze will happen, however if things get that bad that there arent promotions for that long then they probably wouldnt have a test anyway so they would have to use this list. Also the DCAS commissioner can extend the list by a year to 5 years, if necessary. At the end of the day no one knows what will happen. Only time will tell.

We will get through this, together, like we always do. Stay safe.

Agree all around except in regards to retirements. While this may cause some people to pull the plug and leave, I doubt that it will cause a mass exodus of those that are eligible to retire. Our 457s have all **** the bed, and if you were to leave now, your pension would have already taken a major hit. Itll be quite a while before the market recovers and I suspect that guys that had the intentions of retiring soon may be force to reconsider and ride this out a bit longer.

you don?t understand what you are talking about. your pension will be your pension despite how the economy is. your retirement will be when you decide to pull it out. people will leave it in and not touch it until it rebounds, most can retire and wouldnt even be eligble to take it now anyway.

Not to get too argumentative, but clearly YOU do not know what youre talking about. There is ZERO penalty to take money out of your 457, whether on the job or one day off the job. Most guys pull from it when they retire, typically to move away and buy a new house. The only catch is that you have to pay income tax on whatever you withdraw. Ideally, you would of course want to leave the money in and let it rebound. But many guys depend on that money to set up their new lives immediately after retirement.

One of my old sgts retired last month when stuff started to go bad. He said he lost 100k but he doesnt need the money now so it really had no immediate consequence. His pension is what it is and he retired anyway. Just leaving his 457 / 401k alone until the market rebounds. My XO and another inspector I fall under retired this month. People are still retiring, but yes there will be people who didnt plan well and would have retired who r gonna stick around

Your pension is NEVER impacted by the volatile markets. This is only the case for the 457/401k's. Which is why if you're tier 2, ITHP and 50/50 are worth more than gold. The market can crash completely and your pension wouldn't lose a penny.

Some of you need to visit a pension seminar to clear up these misconceptions. At this point Im
More worried about economy tanking and us not getting a raise of any importance or me loosing my rental properties because tenants cant pay rent. People with 20+ on should get out already and enjoy their life while they still can. Market will bounce back in couple years

this will be interesting. Will more guys leave because of how the job is handling the virus? Or will more guys stay because the economy is **** and they cant withdraw what they need right now?

i agree.  the city will definitely bring up the financial burden of recovery from corona when it comes time for arbitration to start back up again.  I don't see PERB giving us more than 1's or 2's.  But that being said, there's a good chance retirees will wait a little longer to retire in order to pad the pension with the possible 12 hour tours.  Even if your final numbers passes the 20% rule, it still pays to make as much money on your last year out.

oh so true, weve never had a catastrophic incident involving damage to MOS lungs which would spur us to be prepared for a similar incident. Besides, its not like we get paid to have a plan B for catastrophic events like this. I dont think the department has ever considered a biological attack a possibility, its too far fetched, who would do that?

Out of sheer boredom and curiosity- I called the DCAS number where you can check the test info to see if they changed the automated message. They sure did. It says that their offices are closed. So you have to imagine they will remain closed just as long as every other shuttered business. So obviously we all need to get thru this terrible time and DCAS is not different. So sit tight and stay safe- it will make your promotion that much sweeter. I hope all of you are feeling well

With the tremendous budget cuts coming it is not looking so good for this list or any additional test in my opinion.

If you look back at the forum from the financial collapse 2008-2010 the job kept promoting and giving tests.

From what I can gather, and this is based solely on reading the 2007,2008,2009 sgts test forums, is that back then when the financial crisis hit instead of promoting 400-450 they promoted 300-350 a year. I dont know how relevant that is. If this is true Im right in that sweet spot of might get promoted, might not
