TOP PAY WITH DETECTIVE SHIELD??

Is it true that if you get promoted to from detective investigator to sergeant, you go straight to top pay as a sergeant??

I've heard it both ways, and people on both sides "know" they're correct. Is there any proof, like in one of the contracts?

stay safe

What is starting pay for detective investigator? If it's higher than the last step before hitting top pay Sgt($81,326) then yes, you should go straight to top pay.... Because civil service law dictates that u can never get a decrease in salary after promotion.

LoLo is correct, just because you get the shield doesn't jump up you to top pay Sgt.

Newly promoted Detective Investigators make 83,802 as of 4/1/11. So therefore, yes, you will go straight to top pay. We had a white shield defer promotion in our Squad for about 4 months until he got promoted to DT3. The month after he was promoted to DT3 he went and got promoted to SGT and is now at top pay.

Soccerpsyco is correct. I had a guy in my command who got promoted to Sgt 2 months after getting his gold shield. He went straight to top pay.

Take it from me. You go straight to top pay sergeant. Starting salary detective is 83,306 that's higher than step 3 sgt. Next step is top pay. Ask anyone who was a detective and got promoted to sergeant. I'll vouch for it as well

Ok I'm going to squash all the nonsense comments posted by some. Being a Detective myself, u go straight to top pay while at BMOC. NO WAITING. A good friend of mine got made of the 2011 test about two months after he got his Detective shield, and he was at top pay at BMOC. Anybody tells you any different, there full of Sh$t.

If you are not a top pay detective , you would be top pay sergeant in one year..... The rule is that whatever your pay scale step is as a detective , you must go to the higher pay scale on sergeant's salary chart.

not anymore ...... It used to be exactly like that before the last round of contract.....but now , you only move up to next step and if you are a detective one day who gets promoted to Sgt , you have to wait one year before hitting the top pay....

Wow....you guys are real characters. 1 day in rank as a detective you go to top pay sgt..... Look at the salary charts you geniuses. You have to go to top pay. 2 contracts ago you had to wait 1 year. With the latest contract the starting salary jumped to 83,806 that's MORE than a sgt with 3 years in rank........so you have to go to top pay!

How's about you do your own detective work and look at the pay charts. Or do you need me to fax you all my pay stub??

My first post but i've been reading this topic for the last week.  I've been a Det. for the past 5 years(OCCB) and luckily i passed this recent test (lucky Sat).  You have to be a at Top Pay as a 3RD Grade detective in order to get top pay as a Sgt. your first day that your promoted, and in order to reach top pay 3rd Grade it takes 2 years after you get promoted to Detective 3rd Grade.  Now if you have less than 5 years on the job and u are a Det. that doesn't apply its a different scale.

No, you don't. You were promoted to DT before 4/1/11, so in you're case, perhaps. Anyone promoted to DT after 4/1/11 goes straight to the top. Look at the god damn salary charts.

I've yet to get a clear answer on this. Half the people I ask say you do go to top pay and the other half say otherwise. I typically don't believe what anyone says because its always just 2nd hand information and they have no clue what they are talking about. Perhaps some one can post the different ranks with the steps for each?

dude you'll find out first hand whenever you are in BMOC, they break it down real good......... I've heard this first hand in BMOC from EMD personnel that if you are a detective one day who becomes a SGT , you must wait one year in order to hit the top pay. If you are a top pay detective, you go straight to top pay SGT.  The formula is simple , three steps as detective are 80988, 82978 and 87278. The five steps as SGT are 79763, 79984, 80147, 81326, 98072...... So, if you are first step detective you would be making 80988 and the day you get promoted to Sgt you'll be place at 81326 step and subsequently hit top pay after a year. YOU SHOULD GET ALL OF THE ABOVE INFO  FROM EMD WHEN YOU GO THROUGH BMOC.

If you're a detective with 1 day in rank you go straight to top pay Sgt. The only exception to that rule is if you're a detective that differed top pay cop in order to get the shield ( mostly undercovers). If your salary is 83 k you go to top pay. I know this because I am a Det promoted to shy and at top pay.

Mjehangir96, whoever from EMD told you that needs to get a new position because he is clueless. I get promoted to detective a few months ago and I can tell you first hand that my salary the day I got my shield went to 83800 (don't remember the EXACT figure , it's 83806, 83808 or something)

This is the Current Detective Contract.  Once you look at the Detective 3rd grade pay scale, now look at the Sergeant's pay scale.  You can have your detective shield for 1 day and then get promoted to Sgt the following day, and yes you will go straight to top pay Sergeant.  You can never take a pay cut on your annual salary on this job once you get promoted to a new rank.  Therefore they have to match your pay scale and since they cannot pay you less, they have no choice but to pay that newly promoted or seasoned Detective top pay Sergeant Salary, which is $98,072.

-- Edited by ChasingTheGold on Wednesday 29th of January 2014 06:01:36 AM

the sergeant pay scale is

$79,763

$79,984

$80,147

$81,326

top pay

$98,072

Detective pay scale 3rd grade

$83,802

One day in rank as a detective you go straight to top pay. I and three others in my command as well as several others at my old command can attest to this. I had about 11 months in rank when I got promoted, a friend of mine had around 25 days. We both went to top pay. The only way you wouldnt is if you took the detective promotion prior to hitting top pay as a cop which changes the pay scale.

Some detectives go to top pay, others don't.  i know several people that did not go to top pay. Okay, here is how it works.  Detective contact percentage pay steps are in April, sergeant's are in late August.   a person was promoted to detective month of february during the years of an unexpired contract, PAY STEP #1.  April comes and that person got the ACTIVE CONTRACT percentage  pay bump. February comes again - that person got a pay bump for detective PAY STEP # 2.  She goes to BMOC month of April and got the next ACTIVE CONTRACT percentage pay bump.  Her salary as detective with all those little bumps put her at higher than the starting salary of a sergeant.  That same August, sergeants got the next PAY STEP putting their salary above detectives.  Thus, "closing the door", so to speak. She can not go backwards in pay and can not remain the same, so she got pushed up to top pay effective the date of promotion to sergeant.  Not one year in rank.  Or the sole reason that she was just a detective.

Active contracts or not, if your current salary is larger than STEP 1 of sergeant pay, Merry Christmas you go to top pay.

DETSGT wroTe Straight to top pay. Anyone saying anything different is either misinformed or jealous.

There were 3 people that I am aware of, one I know personally, that did not go straight to top pay, due to the above.   They tried to sue for three years because they believed they had a case.  The ruling was as i explained above.

The reason why this happened is because that person who was promoted to a Sergeant was not at a Top Pay Cop's salary of $76,488 when they took their Detective promotion.  When this happens they are locked into the old 8 year Detective Contract which started the Detective at $74,611, and if this is the case then they would be pay matched according to that 8 year Detective Contract.  Therefore they would not go straight to Sergeant's top pay unless they were at a 3rd Grade Detective's Top pay already.  Please understand that this Department has to match your pay scale like I said before, they cannot pay you less when you take on your new promotion.  This Department will always try to match your pay scale contractual.

The variety of answers to this question are incredible. Maybe a phone call or email to the SBA office to clear it up.

It doesn't and will not apply to me so I have no idea.

Calling the SBA might not help. When i went thru bmoc i was a top pay det so i knew i was going to top pay sgt. A freind of mine in my same bmoc wasnt a top pay det and he was told in bmoc that he wasnt going to top pay and everyone he spoke to gave him different numbers. But upon getting promoted he went to top pay. Bottom line is your first check is the only way you will know for sure.

The confusion is simple. I was a detective who was promoted to Sgt, and I had to wait a year. It depends on at what point in the contracts you were promoted.  It's just based on pay scales and how they jibe at the time of promotion.

As long as you get promoted to detective after 4/1/11 and you've been promoted after being a top pay cop you will go straight to top pay SGT. I personally know a person who got promoted to det on the same day that she entered BMOC. Other people I know deferred their sgt's promotion until the day they got their det shield and then went into the next available BMOC, a month or two after. This is a fact and don't listen to anyone who tells you different.

Top pay cop + promoted to Det after 4/1/11= Top pay sgt **even if just a Det for one day...
