If you are a detective who just got promoted and then are promoted to sergeant let's say a month later do you go straight to top pay

All depends when you were appointed .....if you were appointed on or before march 30,2006 your first step is $82003 which is more than 3+ year sergeant so you would have to go to top pay unless u have to wait one year to hit the 4+ step which is top pay

 no! you go to the step higher then ur current pay! if youre making 78k....u will go to the sgt step that is just higher then 78k.....not to top pay necessarily

You Can call the unions as well. They probably been getting bombarded with questions like yours. If they cant help try labor relations, I believe they are the ones that would defiently know, because they deal with any questions when it comes to contracts.
