First Class?

Even though I'm not on this list, I wanted to start the thread.

Heard later this month which makes sense, hopefully a big class for you guys and girls. Congrats to all who made it, especially those getting made soon.

that # that is floating around is surprising. I was guessing a decent size class, but that number shocked me.

How big a first class are you hearing? The two 5th floor bigger classrooms can fit 100 each. Biggest class I could see theoretically is 200 unless they use the bigger classrooms on the other floors or if they use the 7th floor auditorium.

this is definitely one of those someone who knows someone from the palace. however, to their credit, they also called this list dropping today really early in the day and then it actually ended up dropping.

Theyve done 2nd & 3rd platoon split for one class before.

They could use the auditorium. I haven't heard anything concreate about numbers, but guessing first class will be at least 200 as they haven't promoted sergeants in half a year.

February of 2022 they literally promoted 230 SGT so it can happen and was literally only 18 Months ago. If there is a rumor of 230 then I would believe it.

If the first class of sergeants goes in before the SBA renegotiates the Sgt contract will we jump to higher pay step? Since with the new PO contract cops are making more than a base sergeant.

Yes, you cannot take a pay cut for a Promotion so most likely what will happen is on the current pay scale the last 2 steps for SGT are 105,000 and then top pay which is 118,000, so they would after the Contract is settled bump everyone to current top pay since that is the only step that will put you over the PBA current Salary and keep Parody for August 2024 where the final top pay for PBA is 109,000 and hold you at that step for 5 Years and then raise you to whatever the new top pay will be After that time period.

PBA raise doesn't take effect until July 21st. The first class will see a raise from 85 to 96k.

Yes that is the current Numbers but the PBA contract is already ratified regardless if there is a date for the raise to take effect and after this contract takes effect they will raise all SBA members to current Top Pay or Step 5 which is 105,000 otherwise every PBA member on this job would be making more at their Base pay than a good portion of SBA members this has been done before and the reasoning is 118,000 will keep parody with PBA salaries for next year at 109,000 which is pretty much the same difference as now where PBA base is 87,000 and SBA is 96,000

You sure a top pay cop isn't making 101k right now?

Top pay cop will make more then rookie Sgt until SBA settles a new contract. The people getting promoted after July 21st will go to step 4.($105,000) Everything will balance out once SBA settles their contract.

You sure the first class isnt going to step 4 which is $105k. If you read the PBA email it states upon ratification (ratified on 4/24/23) the new pay will instantly go to $101k (and some change). Now when you look at the chart of the current Sgt pay we WOULD HAVE TO go to step 4 on the pay chart which is $105k.

I would see this only benefiting the 1st and 2nd (maybe depending on when there is a second class) due to a possible Sgt contract coming out within the next few months.

Again all assumptions based on the history of the pay scale, only real way to find out is contacting the PBA and SBA.

Yes it did say that however the PBA then sent an Email stating the pay raises AND retro will not take effect until July 21st so as of right now until July 21st every cop currently is still making 87,000 Base and SGT right now are still at 96,000 Base. The PBA is doing the City a favor I have no idea why they would maybe something to do with the Fiscal Year ending in June but it also buys the city time for both ranks as far as contract situations.

I was told differently. I was told our contract was ratified (4/24) and we are currently being paid at the new rate. We wont see the new rate until July 21st which will be retroactive within everything else.

If thats the case PBA members on paper should be at around 103,000 followed by this August which will increase to 105,000 meaning Step 5 on SBA pay chart is more than PBA technically but it is not enough to keep parody the base pay needs parody for promotional purposes. I would think current top pay would fix that. Because you also have to understand after the raises SBA gets couples with that fact base  pay needs to be bumped around 17% to keep parody, both the top pay and steps are going to change for SBA so current top pay will not be the new top pay for SBA. Meaning if you get put at step 6 which is 118,000 base you will be stuck at that step for 5 years for the new SBA top pay.

Could be that the city started paying the new rate but through some cost saving measure, or maybe needing time to adjust everyones payrate, decided to lump it into the same paycheck with the retro. But Id assume that new sgts would also be at step 4, but wont see it reflected until july 21st. I just hope current sgts get sent to top pay now.

Yea thats what he was trying to say basically on paper PBA is being paid the new rate but aren't actually seeing the money until July 21st so your retro will also include 2-1/2 months of retro from the new pay rate from April 24th to July 21st. I think with us  we will most likely be bumped to current top pay or Step 5 since next August of 2024 this will all be an issue again

I just confirmed and spoke to the PBA. They said yeah our contract is ratified but we currently arent going to see the pay. They said it will start July 21st although it was already ratified. Its like they knew this was coming and planned it perfectly to avoid paying new promoted Sgts to step 4. Just confirmed with the PBA. He said if there is a promotion this month, new Sgts will go to the regular step 1 Sgt pay.

It honestly doesn't matter once PBA members start getting paid the higher rate every SGT will file a grievance and the SBA and city will have to correct it they are just stalling like they always do.

So apparently, in the last SBA contract, the city had it written in that no matter what, you must wait the whole 4(or 5 years or whatever it is now) to get to top pay Sgt. So the city can now hold you at a pay step until top pay.

Yes that is correct thats why im saying that they will most likely put you at whichever step but hold you there for 5 years. so if current top pay is 118,000 you will get bumped to that but if after the new contract the new top lay is lets say 137,000 you wont get bumped to that until 2028 but either way whether its current top pay or Step 4 its still a pay raise you otherwise would have waited almost 4 years for so its a win regardless.

Yea which in my opinion i think the new step 4 would have to be current Top pay since PBA contract top pay will be 109,000 as a base salary Next August of 2024 so the only starting salary that makes sense for new SBA members would be 118,000 Im just saying that the steps structure will probably change before July 21st meaning lets say new Steps 1-4 are 118,000 and Step 5 is like 127,000 and the new top pay is around 140,000 for example. That would mean technically everyone is held at Step 4 but the amount would be current SBA top pay which I would think all new SGT would be happy with because in effect you would be getting the raise that on the previous contract SBA members waited 5 years for

New Sergeants will still come out winning.  You will go from $86000 to $118000. That's a $32000 raise in a matter of months.

That's interesting since you should have the credits necessary to qualify already.  Between obtaining the 60 college credits to get on the Job plus the P.A., Shouldn't that be enough?  confuse.gif

So the initial college transcript of 60 college credits does not apply? I would think you would have to transfer over you Police Academy credits. I'm sure the department gave that person the email in the hopes that they get their credits in order. Not that you don't qualify. The last thing i want is to make the UMOS reading this forum nervous that they can't get promoted. So if anyone has the answer on what is required to get promoted, you'd help the forum out greatly. smile.gif

The traditional method of attaining a degree has become obsolete.

Step 2 : send transcripts from the NYPD and all colleges you attended to excelsior

Step 3: wait for your credit evaluation

Step 4: review credit evaluation MAP planner.
This will tell you what classes you need.  If you need assistance PM me.

Step 5: use
sophia.org a monthly based college. accredited institution to fill those classes you need based upon your MAP planner ie. Ethics, college algebra. This website allows you to take self paced classes. They are easy and there is no proctured exam. Understand these are only Lower level college courses. I finished 5 classes in close to 3 weeks and then cancelled my subscription once my transcript was updated.

Step 6: use
study.com or coopersmith career consulting to fill other requirements....speak to your counselor before buying from websites and Confirm the class will fit the requirement.

Step 7: you are only obligated to finish 3 classes at excelsior. Doing this will drastically reduce the cost and save you a significant amount of time.  I just completed my Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts through Excelsior University and am now eligible for promotion to Captain.

Any questions PM me.

You need 64 credits for sgt. The academy credits do count. But they need to be transferred from the PA credits to an accredited college. I did empire I believe. It was like 4 years ago so it was empire or excelsior. So you need 60 credits to get on the job OR military. So if this person who got the letter saying they dont have enough credits. If they did military and thats how they got on. Then they definitely dont have enough credits to get promoted. Because to be promoted to SGT you need 64 college credits. Not 2 years military and 4 additional credits. If this person has his 60 credits. I would tell them Immediately get his police academy credits turned into an accredited college transcript and then have it combined with his college credits he earned to get on the job. After that theyll be fine. Will they miss a bmoc or two. Yes. But who cares. It takes a few weeks maybe a month or so to get it all in order. Its not too much of a time consuming process. Now if hes only got the military. Hes got an issue. The PA gives you 30 something credits. So thats another year or maybe more of college to get those additional 30 credits you need to get promoted to sgt. Hope this helps
