Why is it that a sergeant making 96,000 now out the gate will be treated any different than a sergeant with a year in rank making 96,281?


 Basically what the difference Means is that after the SBA settles their current contract newly promoted SGTs base will have to be higher than 96,000 so lets say its 115,000 for arguments sake. All other SGT current pay scale last 2 steps are 105,000 and then 118,000 which is top pay. The issue would be the only way for us to be caught up would be getting bumped to top pay but I think the problem is the City doesn't want to us to be bumped to top pay and the SBA is still fighting that so they may settle and we may be stuck at a lower base while new SGT wont be. But we shall see if they work it out.

Hmmm..

Let me be blunt. Sergeants will NEVER make less than cops again. They were making less than cops 6 years ago and the SBA won their case in court. Why do you think we arent getting paid until 7/23? So they can settle their contract within that time frame until then.

Shame on anyone that passed up the promotion. I think a few of those guys will change their mind next class.

SBA went to court because they held the sgts at step 3 after a year instead of going to top pay. The win in court had nothing to do with getting paid less.

Most likely what i see happening is before July 21st all SGT not at top pay go to 105,000 and get held there for 5 years, even though other SGT promoted after will still be making more than us. Court case or not the city always fights these salary issues every time they dont want people making more than they are supposed to be making currently, and to be honest it will probably take a Grievance or lawsuit to correct because thats unfortunately the only way the City budges with issues like these. Like I said I would hope it doesn't come to that but we will have to just wait and see before July 21st.

The problem is that our 4th step is 105,000 which is still going to be less then cops top pay so I think thats whats causing the delay the only real solution is for all of us to go to top pay number wise but I just dont see the City agreeing to that.

thats exactly my thought. Y would they do this again knowing they got sued and lost in the past for this. But like I said. I know several ppl in that situation, where they got promoted but are stuck on step 4 for the next four years.

 Yea but for them that step 4 was actually higher than what the top pay for Cops was thats why I think this situation is a little more difficult to navigate. What they should do is restructure the Steps to the new contract and just place all affected SGT on the new Steps and just adjust to what step they would be at based on their time. Retro would not apply to that only on the agreed % that they negotiated.

At the end of the day, while there may be a disparity in pay for a given period of time, eventually it will work itself out with an updated contract and retro payments. So unless you're truly struggling financially, it doesn't matter in the long run.
