Yes, it was extended by 1 year so there's still the remainder of this year and all of next year remaining for this current list.

So does this mean that the test can be given during one of those dates? I dont understand what the filing period means.
Also pretty weird that lieutenants would be before sergeants.

Filing period is when you can sign up for the test. I will be announced earlier then the filing date. Then you will begin studying. During that time the filing date period will occur to sign up. Then the test will occur obviously after the filing date

For context the previous Sgt exam was originally slated for October 2016 and the filing for that exam was in June 2016 before it was pushed back to February 2017. So if the filing for this test is in May 2022 expect an exam in September/November 2022 With the list coming out around February/March 2023.

Also keep in mind Im giving a conservative estimate as with the previous 2013 SGT exam it was given in October but the list for that exam was not published until June 2014 which was around 8 months time. That may have been due to the fact that there were still 400 names on the previous SGT list before that exam and the Dept was trying to exhaust that list before promoting the next one. And as with our list it took almost a year to publish it, and the 2013 list was still being promoted during that time. Not saying that will def happen with this list but if ur in the 2200s like me or even further down the list then there is some precedence for the whole list getting made even after the extended expiration date.

First precedence is out the window for this exam due to covd. With that being said the dept and Dcas are LEGALLY allowed to extend the list after 1st year to 4 years. The list can then be extended 1 more year due to an emergency which they will claim is covd and they have done so. This could be challenged in court but will certainly fail Bc the only ppl who would sue would be guys not being able to take next exam and case would prob be thrown out due to lack of standing to begin with. So weve established the list is going for 5 years. They can not LEGALLY draw any more names after the 5th year from the first promotion date. So if theres a list w 2022 exam , or no list, then LEGALLY theres no promotions until then. They would have to amend civil service laws to due so. My guess is the exam will be summer of 2022 to fall of 2022. List will be made by January. Will all of last list be promoted?? No one knows, but youll have a good idea by this time next year

I get that but the last two exams i dont believe they ever officially extended their lists while they continued promoting even after the 4 year expiration,On paper they obviously should have but they didnt so is it out of the realm of possibilities that they continue to promote after the 5 year deadline? i dont know but this city and Dept usually does what it wants anyway and as far as legality this is an unprecedented year where a national pandemic emergency was declared so i dont really see much resistance being put up if they chose to continue to promote past the 5 year mark. Then again i could be completely wrong this is just my opinion and i hope for those at the very bottom of the list that this happens and everyone gets made.

If your trying to say the last few exams the dept was still promoting people past the 4 year expiration date then you are wrong. In fact for as far as I remember and have been on the job not one Sgt list even went the full four years before being completed.

The 2011 list was completed in 31/2 yrs and 2013 list was completed in about 2 years. So none of these lists needed all 4 yrs to complete.

Correct. It may have seemed like they promoted past the 4 year mark only because the end of the 2013 list, the department pushed through 2 or 3 one hundred person bmocs I believe.

No your right thats my mistake i thought the 2011 exam was completed in a little over 4 years not 3-1/2 this is why Im in the 2200s lol.

But regardless like i said earlier, if this next Sgt exam list takes around 8 months to get established then it is possible they could choose to keep promoting even after January 2023 expiration. As far as Legality i have no idea how that would be handled as @Truthseeker said legally they cant after the year extension but the NYS Civil Service Law does state in the event of restrictions against filling vacancies exist the list can then be extended until that restriction is solved and they define restrictions as including financial emergency so could you argue Covid is still causing a financial issue with the Dept filling vacancies even now after the bailout? Maybe maybe not Im not a lawyer but i could see the City and the Dept finishing the list to avoid a lawsuit with some basis because of Covid. I try not to spread fake news to anyone but if i see anything that i think could help everyone on this list then ill post my opinion out there, Doesn't mean Im right but i know there are alot of people far down on the list hoping to get made, and i hope it does happen for everyone.

For those slightly further down, and I feel this is important because investing $1000 into a course for promotion isn't cheap, If you're promoted after April 26, 2022 filing date, does this mean even though you're a Sergeant, you no longer qualify to take the LT Exam?

No you can file for any exam you want, as long as the day of the test you have 1 day in rank you can sit for the LT Exam

You have to be promoted before that day to file for the exam, and all you need is 1 day in rank to take the exam.

@pd2fd not true. Anyone can file. Dcas more then happy to take your money. But to sit you must meet the requirements . Wasnt always like this. Before the key and fast track instructors would sit for the test so they could know the questions asked for future exam recreations

Weird that they announced it for June.  Its less than 6 months and they typically do 6 months in between. I wonder if they are gonna push it back like the last test.  This seems kind of rushed out.

They have yet to select/identify the team of exam writers. If I was a betting man, Id say the exam gets moved back a little farther into summer.

Thanks for the info @63ASAP always appreciated.  I figured something was off because both Elite and Key said they wouldn't be offering Cram sessions at this time.

Do they usually have a team selected before announcing the test? Thanks again

I'm wary of applying logic to anything related to City government, but based on my experience, it seems tight. The writers are a team leader (lieutenant) and a handful of sergeants who are "loaned" to DCAS as Subject Matter Experts (SME). Once selected (which takes time in and of itself, like any other transfer), they go through an orientation/confidentiality process. They work out of DCAS, write the exam, DCAS reviews, then another team of sergeants is selected to take and review the exam/make recommendations (this takes a week or so if I recall), and then the exam is administered.

It's not necessarily that they have to have a team in place before the announcement, but historically, this timeframe just seems...short. Then again, nothing surprises me anymore, and it's entirely possible everything will go as currently scheduled. That being said, for the class currently on the cusp of making eligibility, I wouldn't lose hope just yet.

Looks like they canceled the Lieutenant's exam and added a Captain's in May. Thank God the Sergeants is still good. Anyone hear anything on that?

I noticed that it says the test is given at computer terminal where the 2016 notice states paper or computer terminal. If so that would suck. Also, where are they getting 10k + computer spots? Unless test will be taken on more then 1 date.
