Be happy you passed, but stay grounded: this is a huge list. What do we know about past lists and cutoffs and could this list potentially be exhausted?
Too early to start thinking about that buddy. In the meantime try to become a detective, go get your masters/PhD/law degree..so even if it doesnt pan out you have something to fall back on.
I dont recall any Sgt list in the last ten years being cutoff. The 2011 list had @ 1700 passers. All made it (that cleared carb) and it didnt take 4 years. I got in the 1800s on this test and Im 50/50. If I get in its 3-4 years. But remember we just had a LT and cpt text that lots of people passed.
I wouldn't worry to much. The same people talking about this list getting cut are the same ones saying everyone is gonna get made from that long LT list about to come out. Nobody knows what's going to happen. A long sgt list, a long lt list, and a long cpt list should balance themselves out. Will everyone get made. Who knows. But why stress about it. They made it through 900 plus sgts from December 2015 to the mid summer of 2017. That's basically 1 and a half years from start to finish. If they move our list at that rate or even a little below, most should be okay.
I'm in the 2100s and nervous as hell. I'm terrified of the double whammy where I die on the list, but because the list is so big they don't give another test for forever. I'm cool with waiting four years to get made, but I could be looking at eight years and that's IF I pass the next test.
I am the last one to rain on anyone's parade and say this list will expire but it will. It is just impossible to promote 2600 sergeants in 4 years. It hasn't been done and it wont.
This list will go it's four years and if it reaches 2100, your lucky.

On top of that if you are past the 2100's be honest with yourself. You didn't exactly "put in the work" as much and probably failed originally. Next time study harder and you wouldn't have to wonder.
That said if I do die, at least I will always remember who you notify if somebody gets hurt by collapsed scaffolding. Had Dept of Buildings, switched to Operations, and apparently cost myself about 300 spots.

I agree with just about everything you said except the "put in the work" part. I know alot of guys who studied hard but ended up in the 2000s. Getting a certain grade on a clearly broken gotcha test (I say that because there were 10 throwouts) doesn't mean that they didn't put in the work. People retain information differently. This is a memorization test. Not at all does this weed out the workers from zeroes or leaders from followers. Someone can study for 3 months and score higher than someone who spent a year. Plus I have 2 sgts in my command that got a 60 and a 62 on there tests and still got promoted so it's not like this job doesn't have plenty of supervisors who failed to make that 70 mark.
Even if they made 40 Sgts a month without missing a month they still wont get to 2000 in the next 4 years. They will get up to 1500 if they are lucky. Look at the list with 1670 I think it took 5 years to get to that. Their are a lot of new Sgts that got promoted in the last 5 years.

-The 2011 Sgts list had about 1650 people on it
- 1st class was around April/May of 2012
-Last class was around October 2015
-3.5 years to get through 1650 people so it's about 470 promotions per year based on the life of that list.
Anyone 2000 and below should be safe...expect the worse and hope for the best
The job has 4800 sgts and technical has to stay around that number. Since 2012,there has been roughly 2500 sgts promoted which all have at minimum 4 more years before retirement... Will the job replace 2300 sgts in the current work force within four years? I highly doubt that... And this list is at 2600...more than half the current work force... Congrats to all that passed. It is a big accomplishment. But unfortunately if you are over list# 2000, then.... Just be happy you made the list.
I'm not gonna be "happy I made the list" if I don't get promoted and I don't know why anybody would be. I would much rather just fail and know what I need to do than spend 4 years in limbo. It's gonna be very hard to motivate myself to study for and take a test that I might not even need to take.

No reason for anything with the job. And to try to figure things out is just wasting time really. Strange things this year and It seems the LT list and captain list will be large as well. Who knows if the list will get cut... I think the word people are looking for is actually expire. Unless they extend it like they did with this Sgt exam was scheduled for October then boooom out of nowhere its february. We'll have to see how it all plays out
The large captain and LT lists give me hope, although I wish they had been given before our test to get a head start.
You're right that there is no use stressing about it for four years though. I just don't want to be the guy still on midnights with 25 years on telling kids about how the job ****ed me 18 years ago. Because I will fail the next 6 tests.

This test was not "curved." This test was protested heavily. There were thousands of protests by a lot of intelligent people who provided evidence as to why these questions should be thrown out. Along with some double answers, that is why do many people picked up extra points, not because the job was sympathetic and wanted to pass a bunch of people.

I will forgive you because your answer sounds like this is your first test.
There is no such thing as a curve anymore.
If people protest well and it sticks we get those points.

The job didnt magically shuffle minorities and women into higher spots.

THE TEST WAS NOT CURVED I WENT TO THE PROTEST SESSION AND ORGININAL GOT A 65. I THINK THERE WERE 11 OR 12 QUESTION THAT GOT THROWN OUT I PICK UP 9 THATS A 74 AND 6 POINTS FOR MY SENIORITY THAT LEFT ME WITH A 80 THERE NO CURVE. SO OVERALL I PICK UP 15 POINTS

I'm at a loss as to how somebody could misinterpret my post this badly. I mean I have worked with some dumb cops but still. I'll break it down for you:
I'm not playing the race card, nor am I bitching about diversity. I benefited from the curve the same way they did. I'm not claiming that anybody was unfairly jumped, just that scores were bumped up so more people of every race and gender, including white guys like myself, passed.
I'm also not sure how using a time machine to go back and get on a year earlier would help me, but you do seem to know everything so I'll take yoir word for it.

The point is he failed as of the protest session. If he didn't get a 69 that only means he jumped even more than 19 points, because I see his name in black and white on the list with an 88.

Haha so true, but why lie though? Especially when so many questions got thrown out on this test, yet I know some cops hat supposedly scored in high 60s yet didnt manage to pick up 2 or 3 points. Is it possible? - Yes. Likely? - Hell no. I dont believe that they managed to get that many thrown out questions right and didnt get those point needed.
