they are going to top pay because they took a pay cut to be a Sgt because of that Bull**** 2.25% Community differential which they are considering actual salary..... If you got promoted before the PBA contract you're screwed! gotta love the City!

That's the craziest **** I've ever heard. I was in the class in February. I didn't vote for the SBA contract. But bc I was a few months before the PBA contract I'm screwed? I'm definitely suing.

I'm in on this lawsuit, let's get a group together after this LT exam.

There's no reason why we should be penalized for doing well on an exam and getting promoted before the bottom of the barrel Sergeants.

Has anybody actually called or emailed the sba and talked to Ed? Or are you just assuming that's the case and they're doing nothing?

Spoke to SBA, they are doing nothing. Their answer was "the pay difference will fix itself next year". However, I replied with yeah thats all great and all per the actual black and white contract for people getting promoted after next year, but these individuals in the meantime are going straight to 3rd step and going to top pay the following. their answer was yes that is true but next year it will fix itself. I don't give a **** about the contract fixing itself. I think since its screwed up right now and people are jumping to top pay before guys at the top of the list is bull**** and it should apply to EVERYONE not just some people who go lucky because of a glitch. And for the new promotees I'm glad that it worked in your favor but it SHOULD be retroactive to us all. Also the new BS answer from the SBA is oh well we don't know whats going to happen next year with the new guys but legally I don't think they can keep them at 3rd step for 4 years so yeah they probably will goto top pay but we don't know. typing this on my phone so grammar nazis please don't kill me lol.

my thoughts exactly, if the city is unwilling to reach out and fix the problem, they should move the lucky promotees straight to top pay. it serves as sort of a punishment to the city for not doing the right thing and just adjusting the steps...i have no idea how moving a few hundred sergeants to top pay in a year isnt costing the city money...and if they aren't, the sba should sue

I think it's great that the guys on the bottom of the list who were hungover on test day and barely passed the exam will be making thousands of dollars more than the guys who studied hard, sacrificed, and did well.  What a slap in the face for the hardcore studiers!

The SBA is too busy trying to sell their new "sergeant sunglasses" instead of helping their members in need!  These new shades would be sweet with a pair of denim shorts and "SBA Boss boots."

Everyone should call the union and gripe about it. To say "suck it up" and "it is what it is" is pussy. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.  Those are the same guys that don't do s*it about anything.  When something isn't right you gotta stand up and fight for it. It doesn't always work out but sometimes it does, I have seen it. I'm not paying these union dues to suck it up.

 Their answer was,

"it will fix itself next year"

and

"in order to fix it the city wanted givebacks due to the no reopened clause, and the SBA isn't doing any give backs"

and

"yes the new sergeants are starting at step 3, and in a year it makes sense they will goto top pay because I can't see the city holding them for 3 years at step 3"

so...

We got shafted lol nothing being done and nothing will be done.

The reason the SBA is quiet about this is because ultimately it is their fault. They didn't negotiate a good enough contract ahead of the PBA. When the cops finally got their bump, it surpassed an entry level Sgt (that's the best sign that the deal wasn't good enough for sgts), and that situation FORCES the city to have to jump the new sgts to step 3. The city (this one time) has absolutely no blame in this. Had the SBA gotten more for their guys, or better yet, waited for the pba to go first, none of this would've happened. End of the day, it's easier and cheaper for the city to just let 250-300 sgts jump to top pay after only one year than to renegotiate with every recent Sgt just so they don't get screwed. That's not the city's responsibility, it's the SBAs, and they dropped the ball.

I've personally emailed the sba multiple times. They refuse to respond in writing. The treasurer told me to call him which I did. His exact words were "the sba will not hurt the chances of newly promoted Sgt's going to top pay ". I asked him how is it possible I make less than newly promoted Sgt's when I was promoted in November. He stated "you received a raise in November. Contractually you were not wronged." The SBA are a bunch of weasels. They came to my BMOC boasting how the SBA was the best union and the PBA would get a crap contract. That was November 2016. Then the PBA got a better contract and the SBA has since gone dark. They are hoping we just stay quiet. I was told that since we get a 3 percent raise in March the argument is moot. However that doesn't stop newly promoted Sgt's going to top pay. This is no fault of them at all. They benefited from the PBA contract and that's fine. What isn't fine is we have to wait four years while they wait one. Something needs to be done.

Sorry the job disappointed you.  but being in rank over ten yrs you get harden after each contract. My advice; suck it up and move forward. Hopefully you aced this past exam and it really doesn't matter anymore. Good luck.  FYI. The SBA is for the SBA, not for members that want to abandon them. Keep that in the back of your mind.  God bless you.  Stay safe.

You should've bailed on whatever tit detail you were in, done some police work, and tried to get a detective shield. That would've guaranteed you would've went to top pay as a Sgt.

Well fellas I understand your gripe but to me it sounds like jealousy(don't hate the player hate the game)... New Sgt's got lucky with a loophole and are jumping to top pay sooner than you. When you got promoted you made more than a PO but when they got promoted they were going to make less which is against City laws so they jumped steps. First Sgt steps are so small that any raise was going to surpass them. As far as letting the PBA negotiations happen first that's how SBA got smaller steps and an extra year to top pay AND LBA lost all the chart days. So heck no! No union should let PBA sell out the unborn again. Don't forget everyone hoping to pass this exam is an unborn LT, and every cop on Sgt list is an unborn Sgt.

Amazing how Jman still has the stones to post on here after all the smack he talked about lawsuits never coming to fruition and calling guys out for fighting an unfair test. Couldn't have been more wrong about that one guy.

My argument isn't the jealousy argument at all. My argument is that right now at this moment, all top pay cops are making more than a 2 yr sgt. Therefore all sgts should go to the third step immediately.

Even better, between March 15 and March 30, every top pay cop was making more than a 3 yr sgt, therefore on those dates, every sgt should've gone immediately to top pay.
