Can anyone who's actually been through this process give a play-by-play of how it works? Something like: 1) I get a letter in the mail. 2) I go to DCAS. 3) I give them my DD214. 4) I sign a form. 5) I go home. I don't want to read, 'The way I understand it . . .' or, 'My friend who did it said . . . ' Whether you are a vet or not, if you know the process, great! If not, please don't share speculation or second-hand information. We've all had more than our fill of that by now.
I'm not a vet so it doesn't apply to me. I really just want to know exactly how the process works. It's suggested these things absolutely have to go out before the list can be finalized. If that's true, it's the only independently verifiable indicator we have that the list is forthcoming. I am sure I'm not the only one on the bubble who would like to learn more about the process.
You pretty much nailed the process in your 1-5 above. I did it for the 2011 Lt's exam, so I don't remember every detail, but that's essentially it. You'll sit there while they put some info in a computer and they review your DD214/discharge papers. While you're there they won't give you any info about list size or your list number or anything like that, but I'm sure everyone will ask you to try and find out when you go. Good luck - seems like this test was more screwed up than ours.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I have a few follow ups. What was the time frame between getting the letter, reporting to DCAS and, finally, the release of the list? Also, do you know why is this process is even necessary? DCAS awards longevity based on what the job reports to it. It's the same with the fit unit. Why can't this simply be handled through meld? Is it because you can only use the points for one test? It would make sense as they need to insure they weren't already used and probably have to confirm your intent to use them in writing.
I was lucky enough to pass prior to adjustments, so I went down well before the list came out, but from what I remember, the guys who picked up points and claimed veterans credit went to Centre Street about a week after they got the letters, and then two weeks after that, the list came out, so you're looking at about three weeks from the time guys got the letters until the list was published.
I have no idea as to why they make you verify in person and they verify the other things through Dept. units. I'm guessing it's because it's a one shot deal. I remember that I initially claimed them for the Sgt's exam, and then didn't want to use them, so I didn't show up for the verification and told them I didn't want to use them for that exam and I was then able to use them for the Lt's exam.
