I agree with the miser. Test was a joke. I was handed the rank of Sgt off that test. List should have been cut at 1000. Having a list of 1660 waters down the rank.
You know what really waters down the rank. All the house mice that study at work while the real cops are out there doing work and manage to study when they can and pass the test. I don't see how anyone on a 1600 person list out of 9 thousand is bottom of the barrel. That's top 25% of people that took the test.

Well said.
if all the exams were like the 2003 sergeants exams and previous, there won't be any test standards like the current 70% passing score, which I agree with.
Ray Kelly was disgusted, and I don't blame him, because people with a score as low as 58% were getting promoted from the 2003 sergeant exam just because they were in the first 1200 name grouping.
2003 and prior, those that were on the list were the top 1200, with the exception of the 2006 Lt list which was cut in 2011 because of promotion slowdown caused by the 2007-2008 economic recession. Lists are active only for four years and CAN only be extended up to one additional year by the powers of the P.C.

Don't listen to the trolls. People on here hate the "anti-social nerds" who study hard and score high because they make ****ty bosses. Everyone also hates the "bottom of the barrel" at the end of the list. You can't win. Just do what's good for your career and personal life. At the end of the day we are all cops.
As far as I'm concerned, there will be idiots at the top, bottom, and middle of the list. Take each sergeant on a case by case basis when you interact with them and stop lumping everyone at the bottom or top together.

Heat Mister is right, be grateful that you got as far as you have. You've waited this long and theres a lot of people on the new list that def scored a lot better than the bottom of the barrel that they are currently scraping. So quit whining no one feels bad that you might have to go out and work overtime for the UN. Everyone else is already.
All these Sgts telling this kid that he's lucky he didn't get cut and to stop whining reminds me of a certain captain who screwed everyone last April 18; a badge keeper who said, "I GOT MINE! Try harder next time."
Finally is right, that sucks to have to go back as a cop when you were already in. I wouldn't call the '11 test "a joke of a test." I studied my ass off and am a pretty decent test taker, so I did quite well on it and got promoted a few years ago. It was a fair test, but people still had to study to pass, I know a few people who half-assed it and (deservedly) failed.
It's not the end of the world that he has to go back and do cop work one last time, but still a little ****ty. The job probably could have survived the Pope without a BMOC class worth of sergeants to be working the detail, this job is just idiotic sometimes.

The current BMOC is being promoted on time by the 1st Deputy Commissioner at the Police Academy on Monday in a quick, makeshift ceremony. So the pissing contest is moot.
I agree with finallymyturn. How could you not? I studied for my Sgt's exam on patrol. Other than meal, it was all done at home. It sucked. If they wanted to, anyone not in a patrol squad would get more study time than me on on average day without ever having to take the PG home. You're at a disadvantage right out of the gate. Like many before me (and many of you), I managed to pull it off anyway.
I'm not on patrol anymore so I am part of the problem now. I've been there and done that, though, so don't hold your breath waiting for me to feel guilty about it. I don't blame people for bashing house mouses either but it's not just them. Everyone NOT on patrol has the same advantage the house mouses have. They just don't get called out on it. Hell, some of the biggest scammers I ever met were 'active' guys in enforcement units. I am sure most of you could say the same. So, if you want to waste your energy casting blame, there is plenty of it to go around.
Of course none of this will EVER change. You can either overcome it and beat the bastards anyway, hang on your cross and cry about it, or find yourself a detail and make it work for you. Do something because the more patrol scum that move up the ranks and, hopefully, not forget where they came from along the way the better it will be for all of us!
