I thought the only reason detectives went to top pay Sgt. when promoted was because with the old contract a detectives starting pay was more than the starting pay of a newly promoted Sgt....thus allowing a newly promoted detective to only have to wait about a year to make top pay sergeant...but when I looked at the new contracts for SSA/SDS and LT it seems that this isn't the case and there isn't any overlapping of pay. A SSA/SDS makes less than a LT at every step except for the last where they both top out at the same pay (125K). So I don't see how it would be the same....unless I'm missing something?

A better question is if you have ssa then why make LT? Same pay.. And you give up 102 chart days over the next 7 years. Not to mention more appearances. Check my other thread on cops overlapping sgts with this PERB settlement.

i think sometimes it is better to advance in rank for resume purposes and salary, whether on and off the job, active or retired than to have concern over the amount of apperances or chart time off. People should be looking at perks to being a lieutenant rather than being concerned over how many times they can get out of work.

Depends on your individual situation. Time off with the kids and friends/family are big for some people, for other people... Not so much. I personally think SSA/SDS is the best rank on the Job.. but that's my personal opinion. To each their own.
That makes no sense - in terms of salary SA to LT is the same money but now you have to make over 20 extra appearances a year and reduced benefits. Also spend 1000hrs studying to get promoted with no raise. F the resume.. And if you have SA you're def in an overtime spot so making LT Is even worse.. Sorry but time off is very valuable and it's not "trying to get out of work" it's choosing the rank that compensates you the best in all ways.

One more thing about SSA/SDS. From the 15+ year on the longevity is higher than Lt... So at year 15 you make $229 more than a top pay Lt because of the longevity raise the SBA secured. And at year 20 you make $331 more in longevity than Lt.... Interesting little tid-bits that most people seem to not notice. So it's actually a literal pay cut from top SSA/SDS to Lt now.
Chart days are lost though. Once you get the money you only get two (2) chart days a year! Still beats studying for another lieutenant test!!
It all depends where you work. your chart is 8:15 but some places allow you to work 8:57 so you could keep earning 26 chart days. But if you stick to your 8:15 then just like you said it's only couple .
arent the 2 for 7 years though? then you get them back?? and the way you guys talk about the rank....everyone talks about lt is the rank to be...but then everyone knocks the rank. Is the rank still the rank to be on the job??
Sgt best rank in my opinion. Some make more money. More time off. Less responsibility. Still aren't doing much. More gigs to find yourself in. The list goes on and on. Job has changed. Lt was better about 10 years ago

Chart days depend on the chart you work. Hence the 'chart' days.... I know an SA Sgt who has steady days and does 8:57.... So he gets the full chart day allotment. Which after 5 years in rank with steady days off is a straight 30 chart days. Rotating scooter chart is 10 chart days on top of 3 day swings after 5 years in rank.
Sgt is nothing but a cop with a gold badge. Being a frontline supervisor can not be a good rank. Obviously that doesnt apply to those of us who got the good gig
