I met a former DI last year that retired in 2013, but wasn't working since 2010 because of all the time he built up. He retired with less than 25 years.

You guys are right, everyone is different as far as retirement, but if you're serious about not having to get a second career after leaving the job it's really the lieutenants that have to do more than 20 except in rare circumstances.

If I get a good gig, like at the range or harbor, as a lieutenant I would consider not taking the captain exam and just finishing out my career in that spot, but I don't have hooks like that so I'm thinking I'll end up in a craphole like usual.
