Probably, though if the exam is going to be like this I don't know. Would have to start studying now.
My thoughts exactly. These tests have become so random and arbitrary it's difficult to gauge what to focus on. And at the Captain rank, you need to know that whole mess. Decisions, decisions...
I feel the days of "cramming" for six months when they announce the test are over. If the captain exams are going to be like this test I may at least have to start reading AG and O.O. now. The thought of studying again so soon after what we just went through makes me physically I'll though.
Na...as rmp6969 said, all about QOL...I'm into the steady fri-sat or sun-mon... plus as capt or above they can bother u off duty...I'm not a fan of having to deal with job stuff off duty...my time with family is my time...however cash OT to the rank will make things type tempting...lol...
They can keep their Cat 2 car and cash OT. I think what it all comes down to is if you plan on staying past 20 and if your reaching for the stars. I'm not and I could care less about the stars. 20 and out for me. Retiring a Lt is a good enough pension for me.
Dont be foolish...take the damn test. Do your 10 years in rank and get out with birdie pension.
As far as Lt in detail concerned...i am in a detail where Lt's get OT and annually make mid 170-180k. SA pay Lt just retired made 202k. But thats almost 500 hrs of overtime. Constantly chasing ot instead of spending it with family. Meanwhile cpt without braking a sweat with a new contract makes 190k and now possibility of cash ot
take the test, pass it, if you dont like it, you could always go back to Lt
As a sgt you are answering 1700 Lt and several hundred cpts and some di's ins
as Lt you are answering several hundred cpt's some di's and insp
as a cpt you will answer di's insp and occasionally get on podium.
All those meetings with chiefs are fvcking joke. Just play the game
Take the damn test...

True. The Lt has to work 15 months while the Capt works for 12 months to get the same pay. Thats what 500 hrs of OT equate to--- 3 more months away from family.

Think you guys are reading it wrong. Top pay capt is $163. And that's in 2018. If they do pass the ot. Then maybe $180. In 2018.
Yes $163k plus night diff, longevity, holiday, uniform allowance. The 2 charts posted above are not apples to apples. The LT chart includes longevity pay, the Capt chart does not, so the gap is bigger than it appears according to those numbers.
Think realistically, all the years working, chasing overtime and then closing in on 20 years and not being able to afford to take terminal leave to make more money or be the Captain with a cat 2 car, fri/sat rdo's and a full birds pension waiting for him. That coupled with the weekly platoon commanders meetings and limited overtime we have out here and its an easy decision to make for you guys on the fence. That LT making 180 is killing himself to bring those numbers in when the captain does he shift and leaves..study and take the next test. My Captains test was a debacle in itself but study hard and it pays off...normally

Great way to put things in perspective.
Yes this makes perfect sense. To put things into perspective, there are plenty of PO's out there who claim to make more than Sgts. It may be true, but at what cost. The same rule applies here; sure, there are plenty of Lt's out there who make as much as, or even more than Captains, but again at what cost?
Would I rather make $163 + with the guaranteed take home car? In the words of Sarah Palin; You betcha!!!

The goal is to get paid more to do less. Easiest way to do that is to keep passing tests.

So you guys know....I talk to a bunch of captains....for the most part they say they wish they would have stayed a lt. I know ones hooked up and say it. It's really a personal decision. But for me...I'm not willing to let this job run my life. If you don't think that will happen as a capt then ur in for a rude awakening. 180k sounds nice...but now when my chance of divorce sky rockets bc of that rank...I have no desire for the srars. Maybe I'll be saluting some of you guys in the future...but not u schedule b...I'll salute u w my middle finger!
They say that until they retire and never have to work again. Every old guy I meet who's happily retired and never got a second job retired as a captain or above.

I expect a full salute. And I wont acknowledge you until you're at full attention outside my office LOL. You're the man sgt2be!
talk about increasing divorce rates with your work life... I wonder what killing yourself as a LT living at work non stop your entire career does to your home life.

I agree with this sentiment. Most of us, I am guilty of this, are too concerned with how much OT we make. Granted it is for the benefit of our families, but you really do miss out on a lot which causes strain on our families as well. The next rank is really about what you want to do with your time left on the job. I believe the LT rank is really the last rank where the job doesnt completely on you. Yes, you still have meetings to attend and prepare for, the accountability is much higher than SGT, but Captain is a different animal all in itself.
