Congrats to Dermot Shea from the Key; he is the new DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF OPERATIONS. Now CompStat will be real again. This is good for all future Captains!!!!

You do understand that a majority of Captains are not Precinct/PSA/TD Executive Officers right? You have obviously never been to compstat or any other retarded stat if you don't think it is a huge part of why people think it sucks to be a captain.

Wannabecaptain you must oblivious to the rank... Compstat isn't the major problem with the rank.... When was the last time you worked in a patrol precinct?

Today. Are you a Lieutenant? You obviously have no idea how the NYPD works. I agree that the schedule that XOs do is retarded but commanding officers with Saturday and Sunday off generally hate the rank more than the XOs.Educated grown men don't like to be treated like *******s and verbally abused about sh!t that they can't possibly control. It can be very frustrating when you have all the right answers and you are then asked why you don't have enough youfs in your explorer program. Besides the actual meetings, everything executives do on our job is done to have an answer for the next meeting. We don't fight crime, we fight the perception that we are not doing anything to fight crime. How many people that you know that make $160-$170k and have a comfortable schedule conducive to family life?

Honestly the meetings are more of a nuisance than anything else. If you're a decent public speaker and you know how to prepare, they're not that big of a deal. SOL spot is great for gaining experience for meetings if you're gonna go to the next level. Anyway, I'm honestly dreading the chart...not the meetings.

Stiggy is right. The chart is the most dreaded part, esp when they put you back doing a midnight duty on your first one back to shorten your swing even more, I've heard from other capts the boros like doing that. As far as the meetings, Compstat, etc, I do not believe much is going to change, if anything.  They are still going to be numbers driven, in every aspect, and you're still going to have to answer up for factors beyond your control.

ive dealt with public speaking and presenting to executives on many occasions - meetings dont bother me - what bothers me is having my entire life turned upside down.........hence, no exam for me

I'm not sure how an opinion can be right or wrong. I definitely agree that the schedule of XOs is retarded but it is very much temporary. That doesn't explain why Precinct commanders generally hate life. i also agree with you that Shea is not going to make compstat any better. Billich wasn't that bad in my opinion. The COD however...

I think the rank would be 100 times better if you could actually use all of the time OT that you earn and take two weeks off in the summer and let the XO run the joint for a while.
