take home cars really arent all they are cracked up to be, yea you save a ton of money on gas, but they can be a bigger head ache then they are worth. The problem is this jobs way of thinking. No one wants to be a captain, so lets make the lieutenants miserable to motivate them to study. Instead of making the captain rank more appealing.

This test has a record low amount of people that signed up for it...408 I believe. And even that number is inflated bacause I know several people who took the 2011 Lt's exam who signed up for this Capt's exam in the event they got promoted prior to the test (which ain't happening). So in reality that 408 is really like 380...and out of those 380 less than half are really studying hard. I see a repeat of the 2010 Capt's test....75-100 person list and another exam in mid 2014.
450 is the actual paid........i anticipate at least 100 stay in bed that morning......a grand majority aren't studying like they should..........and even myself, not sure I want it..........they dont make it appealing thats for sure.
Actually I never even thought about those who figured they would get promoted in time from the 06 Lt exam......wow, thats a whole other bank of people who can stay home that day.

The only way to get a good turn out for another capt. exam, ever, is to give all persons in the rank of capt. a take home car. That is the only way I would ever study. Or if the overtime rules were changed. Like maybe instead of all time a third of it could be cash and two thirds could be time. It is time for some shaking-up to occur from that union.

Or do the more logical thing that the department is implementing which is screw with the Lt rank lol.
in 2 questions they used names of old units that were changed via Organization Guide Interim Orders............so maybe them, but still not sure they had much to do with the right/wrong-ness of the questions......other than that, not much else
Not sure backlog. At one point I was but I have 6 month old twins...I'd rather see them grow up then be married to the job. I dunno....see what happens. U?

I'll probably give it a shot but it all depends on where I end up as Lt. By the way, congrats with the new additions to the family.
The less than 100 seems to be accurate...although if only 365 sat, those numbers aren't really that bad. Last test was 500 takers, and only 65 or so legitimately passed. Truth is...the test was as fair as a Captains exam could be. If you studied hard, you will be on this list. As far as throwouts, I'm sure there will be a couple...but in the end you will prob wind up with a list very similar to the last exam, which I believe was 128 when all was said and done. As far as the rank of Captain, we all know what we're getting into if we pass...hopefully they will make some changes to the rank that will make it more appealing to everyone. Personally, I think the majority of us are only doing it for the pension anyway. Also, I am lucky I come close to 100 O/T hours a year as a Lt., so for me, I'd rather make the $160,000 and not worry about trying to pry O/T from the folks who get the majority of it anyway. Just my opinion.

Cims4life, what changes do you think the deparment can implement to make the rank more appealing? Serious question by the way.
Wow...that's a tough question. I don't know if I answer that. I would say that the majority of issues revolve around losing the CASH overtime when you make the jump, and the schedule regarding RDO's, working different tours during the week, not being able to get day off, etc. And then there's always the people who have families who are going to lose time with their loved ones. With all that being said, I can't see the job giving Captains cash O/T, the schedule is the schedule, you just have to make it work for you as best you can...and as far as not seeing your family, I don't really think the job gives a damn...lol. By the way, I haven't even touched on any of the COMPSTAT stresses that these guys go through.
I guess to try and answer your question, I would say start giving Captains cash overtime (on some level) would prob be the biggest motivator...maybe getting a take home car if you make the rank of Captain (that would be a nice perk). We all know COMPSTAT isn't going away so I won't even go there...lol. The bottom line is...no one wants to lose money (again, that is not my situation) to begin working crazy schedules and get beat downs at COMPSTAT, TRAFFICSTAT, and every other stat. If I wind up passing on the 18th when the answers come out, I am all in, knowing full well what I am getting into. I've thought about it, and for me it's where I'd like to be.

I hear you on that. It sad that despite all the options you've mentioned the department has chosen to mess around with the Lt rank instead. Either way they need to do something to entice people to take the rank unless they're satisfied giving a Captain exam every 2 years. Anyhow, good luck on the 18th.
Hearing 63...it's safe to say they will play around with the throwouts and double answers and bring that to at least 100-120...same as last exam. We will know in 3 days.
Many people thought that there was not much to change with the lieutenants exam and we ended up with 20 changes so we will see. I'm hearing 98 passed so they will probably end up with the same number of people who passed from the 2010 exam which won't necessarily mean another captains exam around the corner because this one is really dragging or will it ?
I think they knew they F'd up so they had to do something..........that whole test and surrounding events were unique and not at all customary to any other exam........and hopefully never happen again
By the way, at this rate they'll finish the list in another year or so and if in fact 98 passed the latest exam that's another additional 1.5 years of promotions. Most likely another exam in approximately 2 years.
