To guys who were transit Cops before becoming a Boss

I work in transit, and I have a pretty sweet gig ( I don't work inside so don't get the wrong idea). I passed the 2011 exam with a good enough score that (god willing) I will get made in the first year. I have been giving it a lot of thought to whether I should take the promotion or not. So I'm reaching out to those who were in my same spot prior to them getting promoted to try to get some feed back. 1- what was the hardest thing you had to adjust to on patrol, beside learn the rank? 2- if you can give anyone any advice that will help prepare them what would that be? Thanks a lot. Any info would be helpful.

You don't have to leave transit. You have to fill out a "NOTICE OF RETENTION" (UF-60) 30 days prior to BMOC. Nothing crazy, just a paragraph about what you've done in transit and why you would be an asset to be retained. I think it has to be endorsed by your current C.O. and Bureau Chief. I did it for housing.

Good Luck!
John

good luck with that, if you came from transit , unless you know some stars, you arent going back there. I came from transit. The hardest thing is that you have to learn real quick some things that you just never do in transit. I loved transit. I did tons of OT. Cops in transit do not do even half of what cops in precincts do. I worked Overnight and 4-12 . i did regular patrol and conditions. What i noticed is that cops in precincts seem to be much closer than in transit. I worked with a bunch of cry babies who would bitch over someone getting 1 hour OT more than them. This i am sure happens everywhere, but i feel more so in transit. Also , the 2 major jobs cops do on this job where there is a higher incidence of injury are car stops and domestic jobs. These are rarely done in transit because obviously you are not going to be people's houses. You also rarely deal with burglary jobs in transit. I would say all in all, it is a great experience. If you go to a precinct , keep an open mind and do not act like you know everything. Take a good driver, and best piece of advice i can give you is TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR COPS. Remember where you came from. If you treat your cops with respect and show that you geuninely care what happens to them , they will work wonders for you. This approach does not work for everyone, because if you pretend to care, people will see right through you and you will be known as the scum bag boss everyone despises. I am not saying you can not act firm. Respect is earned, not given, but it goes both ways. Remember that cops have families and lives at home and you should do what you can to help them out. The problem is that too many people are selfish pricks and just dont give a ****. Hope i helped you out.

you will learn the job, its like being a rookie all over again.  transit cops are gate keepers, and make TOS arrest..lol

even plain clothes is diffrent.. in transit you write all those transit violations ... in PD you toss have the world, SNEU ops.. radio runs, car stops, verticals... diffrent world....

I was in transit for four years before I got made. Now, I'm top pay sgt, I passed the lt test and it would be a punishment for me to go back to transit. You could so many things in pct as a boss. There are many details and in busy pct there is still over time too. I never made less than $100.000 as a boss. Go and learn new things that will me you better boss.

couldn't agree with you more, i would take a guy in a pct with 5 years on over a guy in a transit district with 20 years on.

Out at 20 I understand the point ur making... But I can't say I agree with the whole 5 yr cop over 20 yr cop from transit... I know well enough that a cop on patrol in a C houes does in one day what a trasnit cop would do in 3 month sometimes... But I have to give credit to transit cops too.. We work alone and our back up is at least 2-5mins a way .. Not like the pct 20-50 sec away... We hold our own pretty well.. And trust me we get tested quite often enough.. I will always have to thank the 75 and 73 for getting there 1st ... But till they get there it's a full blown fight ...

I appreciate the advice and I'm looking forward to making that type of money, because other wise it would be such a pay cut from what I'm making now... Plus after all the PMs and on here, I'm kinda looking forward to going somewhere new...

In that sense I do agree with the solo post aspect and the fact that transit radios working are like rolling the dice at craps is another story in itself...but I've had plenty of times as a boss with transit guys with serious time on that are either completely clueless at jobs or are hesistant to take any action.

You are absolutely right outat
Does anybody remember the fight between transit cops and some teenage punks on 125 and Lenox past summer? It's on the YouTube. Those shameless cops displayed no tactics and most importantly courage, camaraderie. And when cops from 28 patrol and conditions showed up the heads started rolling... Yeah!!

, not every cop is made from the same clay, and it has nothing to do with you being a transit cop or a patrol cop... its all about balls and that's something your either born with it or NOT.. end of story...

This thread blows. Take it to the rant. No one gives a **** where you worked, only concern here is the test.

Yeah, I "right" on threads. I'm guessing those grammar questions threw you for a big loop.

Stiggity one.... This is only regards to the test?!? If you know about this site , than chances are you passed a test or two..I don't care where a poster worked cause its different everywhere but I think that poster is full of turd if he never made less than a 100.000 as a boss...unless that person showed some skin..curious what boro, cause in my boro it sucks!

making 100k as a new boss isn't impossible. if u work midnights or 4x12's it can b done with very little ot. i haven't made less than 100k as a boss and i dont do much ot at all. although as a new day tour boss it may be a lil difficult with minimal ot

If anyone wants a baseline - I am a newly promoted sergeant and was in rank for all of 2011. Jan-Apr on midnights, Apr-Dec on day tours. According to the online paystub program I made 150 hours cash OT last year.

My gross was $102,000.

that 150 hours of OT will not be gotten most places.

I work in a place where shoothings, home invasions, stabbings happen on regular bases. 49 and some spike will put you in 100000. If you want to relax go to 68 or 123 but you will not make any money nor learn anything.

so here i am 7 month in rank, honestly I made the right choice.
I like being a boss, I work well with my guys, we have fun while we out there.
Im not in a crazy busy house which gives me the space to learn and process.
... the few things I hate is when there cops hold the jobs, when they dont back each other up, and the money i lost (although i do ok with 49s) but still not the same...
just wantedd to thank those who gave me the advice...
