I never worked Transit so i have no clue, but I will say a few things.
1. Why would you study and sacrifice if you are going to turn down the promotion? 2. Did you expect to stay in the Bureau? You know you aren't staying in the Bureau unless the Chief of Transit decides to keep you. 3. Go with the flow.
I work Housing and I passed. I work patrol so I have experience, but I would never compare my experience to a PSB cop. It is two different types of work. Same with Transit, I don't know anything about being a transit cop. In fact, I would have to change my cop lingo because I understand that "1 under" doesnt mean an arrest. Anyway, I would just follow suit to what everybody else does. When in Rome, do as the Romans...
Great gigs especially in transit don'tast forever. One day you can be very happy in a nice spot than next day your transfer and your gig is no more and your back on patrol doing a tour you don't want and miserable making no OT. Those are the things you can't control, all it takes is one high ranking person that wants to change it up and it's done. Just move on become a boss and make more money Working less at top pay.
Everywhere u go pct or housing, they are short sgts. If u go to a busy house as I did its going to be stress filled. I went from doing very little work to 9 hrs of straight work and picking 3 A vacations to having the vacation picks already picked for me when the folder got to me. I went from just my sgt having my cell phone now to co xo having my number. Went from getting any day off to not even able to get off for a family wedding. Ultimately for me the sacarfice is worth it because I'm 1 step closer to LT rank. But I do find myself wondering why I took the promotion.
Please turn it down so I will be promoted that much sooner! That being said, why wouldnt you want to be made? There will be learning curve im sure, but you can always learn patrol. Plus its a few grand more straight into your pension, think towards retirement.
In the classes they do say they try to keep you comfortable, w the bureaus...I saw some people stay , from patrol as a cop to patrol as a boss, when commands were given out. I wear pumas , things change after you take the test and get the results back. They're alot of bosses who are happy with the promotion, and some gave up alot to be a boss. It's all how you feel, if you have a nice gig and are happy with it, go with your heart. Yeah gigs could change but your life will definitely change as a boss. Some good some bad. I took a major hit w $$, thinking I was gonna go to a house that would be busy cause i dont have any hooks, and make OT , i was wrong... Now I have to adjust..If I had the chance I woulda stayed where I was..it gets better in the future but my life is open and I coulda lived fine as a cop for 20 yrs...you have plenty of time...ask your buddies and if they know you they will tell you , and then you decide for yourself...boss could be the best or the worst in the beginning it's all how u make of it...
I wouldn't deter the position.. Its a good to be the boss...But it's all in your heart..my desire wasn't there...and I had a good spot...I took the test for minor reasons.. I don't have a desire to go up the ranks.. If you do , then do it.. Or if you don't like overtime when your 40 then do it..if you did well enough I'm sure you will pass again if you don't go through with it..now they don't promote you till the last day, but I don't think the job isnt happy if you turn it down.
Bro if u don't wanna be a boss then **** it stay in transit. Is either u wanna be a boss or a TOS specialist what ever tickles your pickle, weirdo. I was in transit for seven years, i went to occb and finally learned police work. shame on you for coming on this job to be a transit rubber for ever. No disrespect bro, but transit sucks.
Transit does sucks. I went from patrol to transit, biggest mistake. No one respect transit cops. I was in Times Square one day, spoke to this guy from TD2. He had ten years on the job and applied for firearms sections. He went to an interview and the CO laugh him out of his office. During your tour in transit, no one will back you up to see if you are okay. They are all too worrying about missing their meals to back you up. No one will pick up their radio runs. Mind you, the avg. radio runs per cop is like 5 per month. Anti crime in a district, what a joke. They bring in selling metro-card swipes. they suppose to be the elite unit in a command. And that ATU (anti TOS Unit), bunch of zeros. they dont know how to do jack. Now in transit, you have to swipe your metrocard ever hour, on your meal, when you pick up a job, so damn retarded. Staying in transit is a dead end for your career
I was a cop in transit with a sweet gig, close commute home, Saturday and Sundays off, tons of OT, steady partner. Trust me, take the promotion. YOu put the hard work in to pass the exam and get made . NO disrespect to my old transit buddies, but, TransitSucks is right on the money with his statement. The job is mostly dead end in transit now. There is plenty of money to be made topside if you find the right place. I hit top pay Sgt in about 6 months and the last 3 years i made $120,000 easily with doing about 200-250 hours of cash OT a year. Most places the cap is 105 for the quarter or 420 for the year as a sgt. You will learn much more and I think have much more fun topside. Leave the steel dust in the past and try something new. It is well worth it. It may be a bit hard at first, for you getting involved in par's and missings ect.. but you will enjoy it. Wish you the best of luck.
