I'll take the negative response to my question directed at Patrol = Failure and Yoyo718 as indication to thier cowardness.

Some of you seem to forget one important factor. If you do find yourself on patrol or an activity driven command as a sergeant, you're going to wish you were a cop with 18 years on the job and about to retire.  Guess what, you'll have 15 to 14 years remaining in a department and city that will bury you at the drop of a hat.

Stastically speaking, one of you tools is going to get seriously jammed up, and when that happens, think of this thread and what you've posted about "time on the job" and how your world is about to be turned upside down and destroyed. By the time you've finished reading this post, these thoughts will have burned into your memory and will haunt you endlessely when that day comes. Just remember, this dept and city hates you. Just give it some time, and you'll see. I'm done.

So we're supposed to wait eighteen (18) years to get promoted because it's better to stay a P.O. until almost retirement? Is that the backward logic you're using to rationalize YOUR failure?

You're the one that seems to have spent eighteen (18) years seeking love from the department and have just now figured out that the feeling isn't mutual. Us three (3) year guys find love from our mistresses and adopted puppies.

Hey Patrol,

Ok man you and I have different opinions about vets fair enough. You obviously had bad experiences with many veteran cops. Just remember that when you become a boss even though youre in charge YOU ARE STILL TALKING TO MEN. The fact that you got a minimum of 70 right on a test doesnt mean you SHOULD treat all subordinates like children.

I only have 6 years on and have already learned that hopefully you can come to this realization too.

The rank of Sergeant was created in the military because battlefield commanders wanted to create a position in which this particular person would look out for the welfare of the men. To ensure that the men had all of the supplies and training to accomplish their tasks. That way, battlefield commanders could concentrate on tactics and the grander scheme of running the military. Your two primary jobs as a sergeant is 1. Accomplish your mission and 2. The welfare of your men. Sometimes, the welfare of your men comes first. At the end of the day, your men will respect you and work for you if you work just as hard for them. You are their advocate. Sometimes, there are those that are lazy. Some of them have been burned by this job. It is your job as the sergeant to figure out how to get your people to work. I found out most of the times, it just comes down to respect and appreciation for what they do. Never look down on patrol. Every person here that gets promoted will start out in patrol unless they get yanked to IAB. We seem to forget that patrol is the backbone of the department and the primary function of the department. About someone's T on the J, 5 year wonder sergeants may get a raised eyebrow, but as long as you respect your men and work hard for them, you'll be fine. A chief told me when I got promoted that sometimes, you need to put your arm around your cops. Sometimes, you need to put your foot up their ass. At the end of the day, as long as your men know you care for them and respect them, they will work for you. Not everyone is lucky enough to pass the test. Passing a stupid test may make you a sergeant, but it doesn't make you a leader. Our officers deserve the best leadership we can possibly afford them. That means looking out for them and keeping them out of trouble, not making fun of people that can't pass a test.

I passed the last test and am now promoted. I just happened to see some of the comments and it worried me a little about how some people think and I just wanted to put my two sense in it and my own experience in it. Good luck to everyone that passed.
