Oddly enough

After all this time spent studying I'm doubting that I want to become a Sgt.. I feel like I would prefer to go the Detective route. Now that being said I plan to do as well as I can on the exam still. I just don't know if I want to go the boss route. Anyone else spend the last 6 months studying to feel this way? Or am I the only odd ball?

Ah no thanks. Forget what either detective or boss has to deal with. Its all about providing for your family. Its easy to get comfortable where you are or just settle where you are even though it may not be the best situation. I want to take as much home as I possibly can when I retire and in order to do that I have to study. I'll  worry about the headaches each rank brings once I get there. It may not be the best situation but at least you are one rank higher. If you dont like it as a sgt study when the next LT test comes around. Thats my goal, get to LT then reasses what I want to do next once I get there.  Good Luck

For whatever its worth, I am a Detective and pray to go I pass this test every night. While Supervisors have alot of responsibility alot of people on this job forget or dont know the stresses that come with being a Detective. Phone calls at home about cases, Chiefs looking at your cases, meeting with Chiefs on briefings....as a Detective. Dont get me wrong I LOVE being a Detective but there comes a time where enough is a enough. If you look at the current Sgt list there were ALOT of Detectives from DB and OCCB getting made that should tell you something. Those are the 2 places Detective work is being done and they want to leave. Im sure the "Detectives" in IAB, Community affairs, 1PP and the academy love their gigs but.............they are not real Detectives.

Im in OCCB and have been there since 2005. If i could do it all over again I would have studied with 3 years on the job and go the boss route. Dont get me wrong, as a detective you meet some awsome cops that seem to be unbelievably sharp. This tends to sharpen your skills as well. I have learned things the last 6 years that are invaluable and met people that are amazing. Would i do it all again. Probably not. Its all about money and less people to answer to at the end of the day. I passed the 2009 exam.
