I got on this Job with and Associate Degree from Community College (61 Credits). I knew I needed 64 credits for promotion to sergeant but i just figured my 33 credits from the police academy would count. They don't count as they stand now and I am on Educational Hold until I can come up with 3 additonal credits to send to the Educational Tracking Unit.
I urge everyone to please log into the Educations Tracking Unit in the intranet and verify that you have the 64 required to be promoted to sergeant and your Exam and List number are there.
In order to use your 33 Academy credit for promotion you have to first transfer them to and offical college transcript. I'm using EXCELSIOR college (www.EXCELSIOR.edu) but they are charging me $300 to transfer all the credits from the academy over. The process is called Credit Banking.
Ofcourse in the NYPD the Police Academy Transcript from the Traiining Records is not sufficient for Education Tracking Unit! it needs to be transfered to some BS college that will charge to put it on some other piece of paper called a 'offical transcipt'. The whole process of getting these 33 credits OFFICALLY to the Educational Tracking Unit should take about a month. Luckily my list number is the500's they probably won't pass me over.
Has this ever happened to anyone and if so, How long from when ETU received your transcript removed you from Educational Hold?
You need 64 "college" credits... the NYPD is not a "college", hence why you need an accredited college to recognize that your experience and training is equivalent to a course they offer.
just use Excelsior Credit Bank... if you fed ex your transcript from the nypd...( thats prob what will take the longest to get) and call Exelsior they are very helpful and always answer the phone.... it could be within 2 weeks

It is good that you were able to get that straight with plenty of time left before you get promoted. I'm sure you are not the only one in this situation.
I went thru that same $hit... its such a pain in the ass. If i remember correctly it only takes a few weeks from the time you mail the letter to the time the recognize the credits, so you should be fine. good luck anyhow!
