I can tell you this #2 is already a Sgt, and there are 11 others under list #68 with 940 tax numbers, which I believe means they don't have 5 years till January. (Yes, I ran every name under mine :)

Nothing wrong with running names in the intranet, I did the same...u never know they may just put in a huge class before the rookies graduate, they cleared 111, so their looking to promote huge (fingers crossed).

They said today at that 1 class phase one thingy that there is definitely gonna be a nov and dec class. nov is going in on the 8th. 1 person said 75 and 75. Another said Nov would be 65.
Who knows.

It was boring as fu**ing hell.  Lots of breaks tho and got out at 2:30.  I sat there for 6 hours and really couldn't even tell you what it was about.  They were saying some s*it about 5 phases to promotion.  that was phase 1, bmoc is phase 3.  And yeah I don't know what happened to phase 2. It was really pointless.  But they pretty much confirmed that the nov class was going in on the 8th and the orders were coming down wed night.  plus i got a friday night off so it wasn't terrible!!

It was explained to me that of all of the ranks, the Department runs through the Sergeants ranks the quickest. The Department likes to try to promote as much as possible because it is more difficult to get bosses than say to hire more cops. Can't be a boss without that civil service test. Secondly, there is supposed to be a large class set to retire in October and in April. Every other rank above a Sergeant that is lost has to be replaced, so that invariably trickles down to the Sergeants. Also, the department needs a lot of sergeants for not just commands but tons of details, especially IAB, Inspections and QAD which has tons of Sergeants.

As for the 5 month freeze, I was told that cops are needed to staff details for the summer, so anyone in BMOC is therefore not going to the West Indian Day Parade, etc. With the shortages in commands, they don't want to lose cops for the summer.

So how many were in the class? Do you know up up what number was there? Does that mean if wasn't in the class I won't be going in on Nov 8th?

There were about 30 in the class but remember that's it's not mandatory. Some people could have been RDO or on vacation. I have no idea what the highest list number was... probably around 50.

There is 43 people left on the 2008 list...10 ready for nov 8th and the rest passed over. From what we heard today it seems its going to be a process before the passovers get made if at all..they have to settle the whole jammed up issue and then go before a board to see if they will even get promoted...no guarantee. There was a 49 sent out today to extend the 08 list so it is definately not being cut. So expect 55 from the 09 list to go in on nov 8th and then 65-75 in december which again is no guarantee but based on what we got today it seems real postive for december too. There is a bunch of people in the top 100 that dont hit 5 years til january and that would leave them off the december class. They have up to list number 111 cleared for promotion as per a billboard at uniform and promotions...Good luck to all

Narco-- I heard someone say they were list # 60. Also some of the guys who don't hit 5 till Jan were in the class as well. If you weren't there it doesn't mean you're not. Could have been rdo.
Rich-- The guys that don't hit 5 till Jan can't be in the Nov class but could be in the Dec class. They've done it before. A friend off the 07 list actually was promoted about 2 weeks before his 5th year.

I was figuring that the december class would start on Dec 6th which is when the november class would go out to their new command for the 4 days of that field nonsense. Of course this is all depending on whether or not they stick to the same pattern as the nov class. If that is the case then the december class would have to be promoted no later than dec 31st which would just miss those guys and gals who hit 5 years in january..they would have to be hitting 5 years during those first four weeks..atleast that would only make sense and just in time for new years eve.

I found this little article interesting, and of course, it would happen to be when I finally passed this test.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/cop_sgt_demotions_TZqQqOq1chjPl3VULrsihL

They demoted 100 Sanitation bosses and are looking to do it to rookie PD Sgts, Fire Lts, and DOC Captains. The only thing is that rookie Sergeants tend not to make too much overtime where I know of a guy in a Brooklyn Command making 120-130K because of arrest overtime. Maybe it's hot air, but it is pretty disheartening to hear about this. I would rather not get promoted at all than get promoted then demoted.

If this were true then why is the city still promoting new sgts? It doesnt make sense to demote rookie Sgts. Top pay po's usually make more money. I can definitely see a slow down in hiring again. If the city doesn't offer a sgt exam in 2011 and no large academy class it might be a long wait for guys that are not on top 20-30% on the list. I can definitely see the dept having alot less manpower in the up coming years. Bloomberg and Kelly love to say were doing more with less.

I agree with that premise, but unfortunately, the city doesn't do a lot of things that make sense or that I agree with. I believe that it would make more sense for them to slow down the promotions but the fact that they are looking at it and crunching the numbers does not give me a good feeling. I have heard of other municipalities doing something similar, but what I want to know is do Sanit Bosses take a promotional exam? Were they also on probation before they were demoted? I find it sad the City would even consider it let alone do it.

i read the article and i am surprised that none of you paid attention to this

The union head representing sanit bosses said he had heard the city was looking into a similar cost-cutting plan for police sergeants, fire lieutenants and correction captains.

hm..HE HAD HEARD....so f...ing what. who cares what sanit numbnuts heard? maybe he is disgruntled and pissed off! shiiit, he just lost 100 bosses who were contributing in to the union...so he added fuel to the fire
bottom line guys. our field of work requires supervision. no bosses or lack of them, and the city will get corruption, cover-up, abuse etc
so to hell with sanit union d..ckhead

Regardless, our list is starting very soon. It's suppose to be 60 something going in but out of those 60 something, 10 or so are from the last list which means only 50 some odd names from the our list will be promoted. Now as far as which number they reach on our list (considering any skip overs such as not enough time or credits) i'm not sure. Pretty much if you attended the 1 day course at the academy this past Friday you should be getting the call. Again good luck guys and I will keep you guys posted w/ anything I hear.

Anyone have an idea on when they will get to the 200's? Do you guys think they will keep promoting after december. And does anyone know if they are putting in another police academy class? Lot of questions, I know......

I heard the same thing, no academy class until April, seems odd because the last couple of years they've been putting classes in January and July. I think by December they should get up to about 120-140 on our list, with the skip overs. You figure 50 from our list in November and another 60 in December should put you at 110, take into account the ones that have been promoted (maybe 2 or 3) already, ones that don't have the college credits (maybe 1), the ones that are being held up for either being jammed up/modified etc (maybe 3 or 4) and last the ones that don't have the time (unless they hire towards mid december so they can get all the 5 year wonders in), and they will have 5 years for graduation.
