Got an email from Fast Track this morning saying the following:
"We have received a tremendous amount of e-mails inquiring when the next Sergeants exam will be held. Rumor has sometime in 2010. DCAS & the Department have not released any official news on a new exam. As soon as official word is released, we will let you know asap."
If they are starting a home course in may then a test wouldnt be until early 2011. I believe they have to give 8 months notice for a test.
Your list wont be out until this summer when the 2008 list is close to completion. They dont want to release your list to start its 4 year countdown yet.
DCAS gives you six months minimum from announcement of the exam to the exam date. They, for whatever reasons sometimes extend the exam date. If they were to announce an exam today, the exam would be in August. With the continual cutbacks in manpower though, I could see the 09 list going on for quite a long time. The exam has 4 years from the time the list is produced. Already, the dept is inundated with Sgts. There are Sgts being used as regular patrol.
If contract talks proceed and we give up the unborn with the new retirement tier of 25 and 50, I believe we will all of a sudden find money to hire a new wave of cops. Until then, I would be extremely surprised if we have a test next year let alone this year.
You must be working in some nice detail that has tons of sergeants. I'm in a regular precinct and we don't have enough of sergeants. They got rid of lots of sergeants spots and we still have some squads without sergeants.
al3181- One pct does not make an entire dept. I wished all of the PCTS were like yours, cause we would have exhausted the 08 list by now. It's 2010. We have promoted less than 500 cops in two years. Why is that? Because on the whole, the Dept has a lot of Sgts as compared to regular cops.
You are right on one of two things. I am in a VERY nice detail and I lucked into it after 10 years. You are wrong in that we have a lot of Sgts. We don't and we finally filled our sgts slots just recently after from what I was told a 2 year wait.

Rumor has it November of this year will be another Sgt's test. Trust me there are not enough Sgt's. Not to mention the 1990 to i believe 1994 or 95 were big academy classes and they are reaching retirement soon. Be patient your list will be out by August the latest. Just hope u make Sgt before the Lt's exam. Remember you only need a day in rank to take the test. Enjoy being a cop with time on because you will soon be a Rookie Sgt and starting all over again.
18 and1--- I thank you, you are one of the more normal, and practical mos on this site lately , n you have some common sense... I agree with you that it's not impossible of a 2010 or early 2011 test... Some of these people who reply shouldn't be a boss.. How they think the world will end before another test... There are either small people or small one sided minds... There def will be a test soon.., and the 1009 list will be out any day or week now.... And yes the 2008 test will run to July .. Hey Im not at 1pp, but sometimes this job is just down to the basics of common sense ...
