I recieved in the mail a letter from SCPD saying everyone who got a 97.5 (760people) will be in a lottery and 460 names will be selected to start the process. I also scored in the mid 80's on the 2009 sgt test. I have no idea on what i should do, go for the SCPD or stay and get promoted. I have decided i will go threw there process but i am not sure i would leave given i would take a PAY CUT for the first 4 years than by the time i hit 5 out there i could be at top pay for sgt. here
I know the way the world is today alot of jobless people would love to be in my place so i am greatfull for that, but i still dont know what to do. ANY THOUGHTS????
See how it goes and start the process for scpd and wait to see how the sgt. list goes. If I was in your shoes and I get called for scpd, without a doubt go to sc because of the less bs you have to put up with the nypd and your treated like an adult. The way the economy is and the city's budget who knows how long any of us can get the call to be a boss. At least you have two ways you can go if your list number for scpd gets called. And if you don't get scpd you'll be a sgt in the nypd.
I can't tell you if you should go or not however I take Issue with guys like Sackex stating that other departments treat you like an adult as supposed to the NYPD. I've been on this job for 5 years and I always got treated with respect by every boss I ever dealt with, if you are treated like a child maybe you should look in the mirror and see what you're doing to cause this. Furthermore you can always leave I'm so tire of guys putting this job down this is a great job and those of us that have it should be proud and happy for it. I'm tire of all the whining and crying. As for you blockhead go through the process and weight the pros and cons and I'm sure you will make the best choice.

See Kayserzsoze69 thats where your wrong because other dept's do treat you like an adult as opposed to the nypd. The NYPD is the only dept. that looks to jam it's cops up for any little thing that goes wrong. Now every guy that I know and speak to say the same love being a cop hate the politics of the nypd. You think suffolk county cares about how many summonses you write a month, if you don't come in with that number, guess what, you get put on another tour. Maybe you should start looking in the mirror and realize the dept. for what it is to any cop and that is your just a number that's all you are. You try to do your 20 and get out if you can. Some people love the nypd that's fine. I love being a cop, I hate the politics of the NYPD. This job doesnt, the city, alot of people that live in the city don't care about you. As cops all we have is each other and to back each other up to go home to our family so before you start coming on here and start saying I need to look in the mirror wake up and see that job for what it is, A JOB because you ain't saving the world because the nypd doesnt care about you, your fellow officer does, not the dept.
Blockhead, I left for "greener pastures" and found myself coming back in large part due to the pay cut. I don't know much about SCPD, but you need to ask yourself if: 1. Can you survive the pay cut, and 2. Given the economic climate and all the "layoff" talk everyone throws out there, can you give up your seniority here and know you'll have a job in 1 year's time from when you move on? I agree that laying off cops is probably not gonna happen, but you never know...........I'd do as the others here advised, go through the motions of the background process and evaluate your situation when the time gets closer......Good luck either way!
Go through the process because it doesnt hurt then make the decision when the time comes to make a decision.
But as others have said, job security in this day and age is tough. What would happen if you walked away from the NYPD for over a years time then Suffolk does layoffs, of which rookies are the first to go? Then you would be out of two jobs with nothing to show for it.
I would also take in consideration what your own goals and inspirations are. In NYPD there are several specialized units that small PDs can only dream on. Would you be one of the lucky ones that has the skill and motivation to work in these precisions units?
There was a time in my career that I was also looking to move on to another state department just to find out that there is absolutely no movement, unless somebody retires or otherwise leave the job. At least here in NYPD, there is a steady stream of promotional exams to move up.
Also, do they have same retirement plan as we do, 20 years / 50%, or is it different, maybe better or similar.
kaysersoze69 you are seriously dillusional. You will be that guy who gets suspended for doing your job, "but I love this job, I was just trying to do my job". Go to Suffolk. You still start at 60k there so its atleast survivable. Top pay is 98k base and up for a new contract. Also you dont contribute to your pension at all, its all paid by the county. And if you get jammed up they cant touch ur pension where in the nypd they can take everything. This job is 20 and out where as Suffolk you'll stay there for 30-35 since there is Zero stress compared to this job. And I have plenty of friends who are Suffolk cops so I know what Im talking about. One guy was "punished" for having really low activity for a couple months so they put him and another guy on footposts in downtown Port Jefferson for a week. I kid you not, real story. Easy to tell which is a far better job.
ZOO-MASTER what is so dillusional about what I said? Tell me where I said that Suffolk is not a good job which is the point that you are not trying to make. I never said Suffolk or any other departments are not great maybe even better jobs for some, what I'm saying is that this job is a great job and I'm tire of the do nothings bad mouthing this job but yet they are still here. Like I said I always been treated with respect on this job do I hate the politics and bs of course but the good out weights the bad.
This dept ain't great because it is the only dept. that looks to jam it own cops up, for any little thing. The dept. doesn't back you for anything. When something goes wrong it rolls down hill to land on the cops not the higher ups. kaysersoze69 you talk about the job giving respect, they don't treat you like adults. A supervisor has to go to the scene for any little thing, why because your a cop and the higher ups don't trust your decisions. You can't make a decision on your own. And don't talk about do nothings talking bad about the dept. because you know what, the less you do on this job the better you are off. You take the promotions exam, pass and get promoted. You can have 1000 collars for your career or 1 collar, you mess up once, that's it your done. Remember one thing it is a job and pays the bills, thats why guys stay and do this job. 90 percent of cops in this dept. would leave for fdny, nassau or scpd in a drop of a hat if they get called. Do 20 and you get out. Zoomaster is right SCPD you do 30-35 years and not stress over anything, the nypd your lucky if you get to 20, better benefits, better pension in scpd.
