If they continue with a bmoc class every other month then the 2008 list will be exhausted in april or may of 2010. The 2009 list should be established a little before that so that the list is ready for promotion as soon as the 2008 one is finished.

And considering theres no sgt exam for 2010, im assuming it will be a fairly large list.

The list will be out whenever DCAS deems appropriate. (Usually around September) For those of us that will be on this upcoming list, no rush... There are over 350 names still left on the last list, meaning our list wont be touched for quite some time. Furthermore, civil service lists technically last for four years unless DCAS decides to cut one off and move on to a new one. Therefore, since the 08 list is not moving as fast as we would like, the later the 09 list is established the better. (not too late of course!)

Lets all be honest the waiting sucks, a lot, but it isnt the worst thing in the world. Ill go on a limb and say the worst part of the wait is reading some of the rediculous "you heard it here first" posts that claim to be the truth. "Reliable source" has really become quite laughable...:no

Waiting does "suck."  Especially after the slowdown. But this is where all the strain, stress and sweat of studying actually pays off.  Imagine those that as of right now have failed but are depending on throwouts to actually be on the list. That sucks! Wish good luck to all through these tough times of just sitting and waiting.hmm

Update: I went to DCAS for my military points, I was told that the list will be out in September (this year). Also, a good source  confirmed this, saying that the list will be out in September and that they will kill the old list, putting in a large class from the new list soon.

The last list to be killed before its 4 year expiration date was years and years ago... and im not talking a list thats exhausted because theres no more names on it.

The current Lt and Capts lists still have a ton of people left on them but theyre not getting killed. They are running their full 4 years before another one is ready with eligible names.

Why would the current Sgt list be any different? Why would the dept kill a list 3 years early just to get to the next list? That makes absolutely no sense.

Did anyone guess why there is no Sgt exam next year? Thats because the dept has over 1000 names to hold them over for years!

Guys, relax. Your time will come. But thinking the dept will kill a list of eligibles for no apparent reason just to get to the next list of eligibles is ridiculous.

Let me get this one straight- Kill the '08 list before 2010? That means there will still be people who passed but didnt hit 5yrs yet, therefore giving them no chance of ever getting promoted.  If by saying "kill the old list" you mean expend it-ok- but if you mean cut it where it stands you are an idiot and so is your source.

Firstly, I want to say that I really hope that everyone that passed the exam gets promoted. Truth be told, nobody knows what will happen with the list. The only facts are that when the list is produced, (not when the exam is given) by law the list has to be out for a minimum of one year and no more than 4 years. Nothing says that everyone has to be promoted off of that list or anybody has to be promoted for that matter. I remember a few years back when Kelly stated that he wanted to give the test every year so he could pick the top scorers while giving everyone a chance to take the exam. We used to run through the sgts lists like water but Kelly has stated that because of the lack of federal funding and the poor economy, the NYPD is going to shrink by 1000 next year. Less cops plus Sgts not retiring and the LT list moving slow as molasses means we are going through uncharted territory. I wish everyone luck and I am as anxious as anyone to see the 09 list, but honestly, I am not holding my breath.

Hey Boyblue do you think there is a chance than that we may not get promoted from the 09 list? I studied my butt off and got in the high 80's so if thats the case i will be a bigger do nothing for the 10 years i got left.
I heard a rummor that they are going to be promoting alot in the next few moths, i tend not to believe that but the same person told me 75 people were going into BMOC Sept 1st and he was close with that one.

In writing this, I want to state that this is only an opinion and not fact. I don't have an uncle that works at DCAS who is drinking buddies with the Mayor and plays peaknuckle with Kelly. I do believe that anything is possible and not going through the whole list is a possibility. Remember a few years back when people in the 60's were getting promoted because they were grading off a curve. Those lists were killed. Granted there were people in the low 60's to the high 50's made the list and it was cut. Still, I think there is a possibility that they won't get through the entire list. I was able to squeak out about an 81 with points added and I am worried for myself. Again, this is only an OPINION and not fact. Again, everyone that passed this test put work into it should be rewarded by a promotion. But again, anything is possible.

Those lists that were cut with scores of people in the 50s and 60s were thousands of people long. I believe the list was always the top 2500 scores, regardless of what scores they were.

To be honest, i dont think a list has been killed with scores OVER a 70 yet. If this list has 800 people and they keep it for its full four years then thats 200 a year which is easily doable. The only way i would worry is if this list is in the thousand or above.

The old lists were capped at the top 1600 scores. Anyone that got the score that equalled number 1600 also made the list. So, if I got a 72 and that made 1600, anyone else with a a 72 made list as well. That's where the 2000 name lists came from and made it easier to cut. I'm sitting with a 69 on this test and am waiting like everyone else here and have the "double answers" from questions 37 and 76 and hoping to pick up one of them, but don't see them cutting the last list, so I think I got a while to wait. Good luck to all.

Times changed-people didnt. The only estimation that i feel we can all go on is the percentage of people who may have passed this test. There is no solid reason to feel that instead of an average of 10% passed(like the last test) its now say 25%. Did anyone see that more people studied for the 2009 test than any other? The same amount of people took the test as the year proir. Also, most people who took both have differing opinions as to which one was harder, to me, means that its fair to say they were about equal. I feel that although its moving slowly there's no reason to panic yet. Anything is possible but i just dont see more than 1000 or so names on the list, and if thats true i dont see names dying either. just a thought...

When the list of the 50 and 60 percenters were created, we had a huge need for sgts. People were retiring in droves and there was a huge turnover rate at the NYPD. (Not too long ago, you were almost better working at McDonalds until our recent pay raises) Now, the economy sucks and people are not leaving. (At my cushy gig, all of my Sgts except for the one on the LT's list have well over 20 years) They may not kill the list early and for selfish reasons I hope they don't. But I can see this list going rediculously slow. Then again, find out how well a Chiefs kid did on this test and I promise it won't be killed before his/her name gets called up.

without the info in front of me - I think it was a/d. From what I've read here, the main debate is that the little insert into the test that took the questions answers from being a double answer or not.

LOLO...I am only going by what was posted here. According to those "in the know", Q # 76 is a double answer. I don't know what the right answer was, but choice "A" was allegedly also correct.

I dont know how many times people are going to say this...

The 2008 list came out last September because the 2007 list had no one eligible to be promoted until January! So instead of the dept not hiring anyone from sept - jan they published the 2008 list.

The way civil service exams go in this dept the list is established when the prior list is almost finished or when the prior exams list has been out four years. If it takes three more years, since the 2008 list was out a year already, to finish that list then the 2009 list wont be out until three years from now.

But considering the 2008 list has about 290 names left, it should be finished in spring of 2010, when the 2009 list should be coming out.

The dept doesnt kill lists early, before its full four years, for no reason just to move onto the next list. Either a list is exhausted and a new list comes out or a list goes a full four years from when its published before a new one comes out. This how every sgt, lt, and capt, exam has been running for YEARS.

And why hasnt a sgt exam been announced for next year, hmm? Because the dept doesnt need one because they have enough sgts eligible for YEARS. So relax people...

Well said brooklynbacon. Cant argue with anything you said. Just wishful thinking on my part I guess. The wait is really torture, but at least I KNOW I passed. I feel for you guys with 68 or 69 hoping for throw outs. To not know your fate must be excrutiating.
