RE: good luck to all whom take this exam

Who is always used when it is the subject of a verb.  A neat trick is to substitute who for he and whom for him and answer your question.  For example:

To who/whom did you give the keys?  I gave the keys to him.  Him=whom.
Good luck to all who/whom take this exam.  Him take this exam does not make sense.  He takes this exam is better, therefore use who.

Anyone with 5 years or less and planning on staying 20 should take this exam. I just hit 5 years and am getting promoted very soon, go to the classes, study at 3-4 hours a day and as long as you put in the time, you should pass and do well. Guys need to stop worrying about Yonkers, Jersey City, Nassau etc. and start worrying about us, you can still make this job work for you if you try. I know the pay is not what we deserve, but this is the career we all chose, if guys put as much effort into studying instead of complaining all day and nite, maybe they would do better on these exams!

jagged is right, those 6 months will feel like a blur after the test, it will fly by. Just suck it up, start studying now now while everyone else talks about it.

Exactly.

Unless you have a super cushy detail which allows you to study all day then youre going to have to sacrifice something to pass this test.

Sacrifice something that eats up a lot of your time like video games, baseball games, sports, etc. Then when the exam is over reward yourself with something you enjoy.

This is something Fast Track teaches and it worked great for me.

Of course they will release the list in September because the cut off date for the 2009 exam is September. Those who are worried or unsure if they made the 2008 list will pay the $60 to take the next exam. That just means more money for the city.

Maybe it's best for those who passed the 2008 exam to post on the 2008 Sergeant Exam Forum. I am very happy for all of you and wish you all lots of luck.

Those of us who are planning to take the 2009 exam have to focus on promotional classes and come up with some kind of strategy to pass this exam. I am glad that classes are going in eventually, but I would rather focus on the upcoming exam instead of one that I did not pass.

Best regards to all.

Fold like a deck of cards? Maybe buckle like a belt, that makes more sense.  And i am currently assigned to BMOC, 7x3,  feel free to come by and meet someone who is vastly superior to you in intellect as well as police work and everything else im sure.

Bloomberg is trying to save money so he moved BMOC classes to PSA court yards. You have a Different Housing develepment each week. Change of scenery. Hands on experience. During breaks you can play basketball. I think this was a give back with the new PBA contract. Kind of a final farewell as a P.O.

I passed the 2008 Sgt exam and just wanted to put something out there for MOS's with kids, those who do alot of overtime, etc who want to take the next test. I didn't go to one class (because I have a young child), nor did I buy any material for the exam. All I did was study straight from the guide. I am sure some of the stuff is good, for example I hear copcards are good to carry with you on patrol, but I just wanted to let you guys know you can do it even if you do not have alot of free time or money for the classes. I did 50 hrs a month with a family and made it. The one thing I think everyone will agree on is the study guide that the dept put out on the Intranet was excellent. I am sure they will do it again, it gives you an idea of what the questions are like, especially if your not going to classes. If you really want this though your gonna have to put in the time, anyone who says "oh I studied the night before and got a 71" is full of ****. Its a hard test, and I do think you need a good 5 months. I also took 2 weeks off in january to review and so did my partner and I think it was worth it. Good luck to all and I would say start studying now. No matter what your situation you can pass this test and I really think this job is a bosses job now. GOOD LUCK!

congrats irish, well deserved. You are right , about it being a hard test and that proper preparation is required for one to pass. Everyone i have spoken to was promoted has told me they love it and would never go back to being a cop. I guess i will enjoy the last few months i have left.

Some of the best advice I can give to the guys and girls takng this test is to study at work. If you can get a few hours studying on job time it's 80% of the battle. It sounds difficult and it is especially if you're pushing a busy sector every night, but if your command has fixer posts like metrotech or a good hospitalized thats in a coma and won't bother you than try to take them. The more time you spend at work studying, the less you have to study on your own time. If you are on patrol those copcards are excellent. If you're in a detail this post does not apply to you.

thats funny that u brought up a perp in a coma cuz when I was studying I asked for hospitalized prisoners all the time. I once sat on a perp for 3 wks straight cuz he was in a coma.(collard for drinking a beer with no I.d. mind u) I would sit there and study and once in awhile look up at him and say aloud because of u imma pass this test. he ended up dieing a few weeks later. weirdface.gif

Irishprincess14, thank you so much for posting. Your success story gives me hope. I am on a child care leave of absence and my little one is 4 months old. I have no idea how I'm going to study with a very demanding baby, I don't even know where to start.

For anyone who passed, about how much substantive study did you do each day and how many questions. Did you focus on one PG section per week following the promotional classes' schedule? How did you review the earlier sections as the months passed so you would retain the information? Did the police academy questions truly mirror the ones on the exam or were the ones given by promotional classes just as good?

Thank you very much to all.

hey bee when I was studying I had a new born son. I work 4x12 and when I would go home from work I would stay up to 5am watching him. when ever he would sleep I would study I would read each chapter, make index cards. read them 3x then move on to the next section I would read the index cards on patrol, in aab & even when I took a bath.lol I always had them on me. to me the key to passing is index cards. make lists and memorize them. I read the pg a total of five times. and like I said b4 after each chapter I would review my index cards 3x before moving on. the classes aren't necessary. u only have to go to the inbasket classes. and maybe the cram courses at the end. try to give a good 3 to 4 hrs a day with a minimal 1,000 index cards all together for 6 months. it seems like a tall order but if I can do it wit a new born ANYONE can do it. and I'm not good on written test by any means. good luck.

Hey Bee good luck, it will be hard but you can do it. I did a few hours a day for 7 months but everyone has their own pace. Everyone is right, if you can, study as much at work as possible. Breaking up the sections week by week is good. I made the mistake of writing everything out and after 3 months realized it was a complete waste of time, ya just have to read it really. Remember the in basket is very important, it could be 20 questions for you or against you. I noticed on the last test I got so caught up in knowing the procedure and who to notify etc, and alot of the questions were who does it the patrol supv or desk officer, so even if you know the procedure you have to know the difference. Good luck everyone

I didn't go to classes, but bought the material as well as printed out all the academy material; most of all I read the patrol guide like two times. good luck to all this combination helped me pass.

Everyone has a different method of studying, but one thing is for sure, you have to read the patrol guide.  Within the next few months try to get through it at least two times.  I was lucky enough to have my wife who watched my daughter who was two at the time so I could have time alone to study.  It was tough those six months, but in the long run I know it will be worth it when I get to spend more time with my wife and kids now that I dont have to collar every weekend to make some extra money.

lol, thats a great story!

Heres what i did to pass, though im no expert by any means because i BARELY passed...

- Read the patrol guide once between January to August or so, just to get familiar with it.

- Took the Fast Track classes in August and read at their pace. One section a week and the bigger sections took two weeks.

- Took two weeks off before the test and did about 4 - 6 hours a day during that time reviewing.

- Day before the test didnt look at anything or read one thing. If you dont know a procedure the night before the test then youre not gonna learn it then.
Take the day before the test off and eat well, relax, watch tv, etc.

If i could do it over again i wouldnt take the classes and i would be $600 richer because of them. Granted, they are helpful but 95% of what you need is in the patrol guide. Just keep reading that.

However, even if you dont take the classes i recommend going to at least one in-basket class. That will teach you the tricks to it.

I took 2 weeks off before the exam and studied about 12 hours each day with breaks of course.
And I passed with a 72, mind you it was a harder exam than the one in 2007. KSA guide is great, then skim through the PG for stuff that's missing from KSA then The Key Cram course with 1-2 Fast-track's "in-baskets" classes.

I did take the exam back in 05 but I didn't take the studying seriously because of the old sgt contract.

This is how I passed the exam.  Seven week before the 2008 exam, I was shipped onto midnights because I f-up.  So I took advantage of that and decided I will pass the exam.  I just read the Patrol guide and passed.idea
