almost 7yrs to top pay at least 3-4yrs to make what a sgt makes in nypd and some people cant afford a cut for 3-4 yrs and no chance to make that money up if you have over 10yrs service. A sgt w/ min ot in the city w/ the var. sup. will have the same pension or better than ncpd po when they retire. Now if want to talk about quality of life no contest leave and never look back,would never tell anyone not to leave nypd for a job w/ a better qol.
There are inspectors on our job getting jammed up for misusing ez pass, and leaving during thier tour.... That says alot, as a Sgt. you are a easy scape goat. From what I hear academy pay in Nassau sucks but at 2 years you make 70+, and top pay at 116 (given its like 9 years later) is not going to be same pension as sgt in NYPD. But its definetlly not for everybody.
I did not know it was 9 yrs to top in nass. makes it a tough decision for guys w/ time on and sgt or above. But the young guys out there should take every test and leave if you get the chance, guys here w/ rank and some time also have it pretty good as far as retirement when it comes time you laugh but that check at the end of dec for 12,000 (i know before taxes) is a pretty good deal. If you can squeeze out 115,000 for your final #= 57,500 approxplus 12,000 your looking at a pension of 70,000 a yr granted ncpd and suff have to work in alot less stressful area but its a nice perk.
You never know where people are coming from. If I were 10 years younger and single, I would jump on NCPD without hesitation. Today I wouldnt go.
In my case it has nothing to do with the pay, pension or QOL. Simply put, my wife would wait until I fell asleep, pour a gallon of gasoline on the bed and burn me alive if I even considered starting from scratch anywhere else.
I wouldnt blame her either: another Academy, the pay cut, being the low man again, and all the rest of it. I could do without it at this point in my life.
Im reasonably content anyway. Should that change, I'd leave Law Enforcement altogether. Screw the pension. It's a great benefit but not worth trading in your happiness.
I'd probably go tend bar and look to open my own place or something.
