Where Do You Want To Go?

When you finally get the call, where do you guys want to go?

Unless you have the juice to go wherever you want, you better put some thought into it now.  There are only so many 'Hook' Houses to go around and everyone tries to get them.  Most are overrated anyway.  If you do a little homework you'll probably find a few diamonds in the rough and not have to compete with some Chief's kid to get it.

My advice is to pick your top 3 Boros.  Then pick 3 or 4 commands in each.  Don't forget to throw in 1 or 2 PSAs and TDs.  Then do a little homework:  figure out the commute, what the CO/XO/Lts are like, what Tours are short, etc.  It will help a lot.  For example, a command might look good on paper but have a psycho CO.  Another might be considered a hell hole but is actually a great place to work.  If you do your homework, you're bound to find a few commands you would have never considered before and have a much better chance of getting them.

It's like GI Joe, 'Knowing is half the battle.'  You have to pick 10 commands.  The more commands you know about the better.  I literally had about 10 commands in mind.  Unfortunately I focused primarily on 1 Boro.  Naturally, not a single one was on the sheet.  I might as well put on a blindfold and threw darts on a precinct map.

Keep an open mind and spread out those picks.

I was thinking of borrowing a chimp from the Bronx Zoo and have it make my picks for me.

You have nothing to worry aout.  I'm using a phone call to ensure you're spot.

You'll love it!  Everyday will be like a night at the movies.  Multiple screens to watch for hours on end; you can pretend the toll booth is a box office (at $10 round trip, the toll is about the same price as a movie) and the bosses who come to scratch and harass you every hour are ushers.

You bring the popcorn and we'll do the rest.

dream sheets are useless!the job gives us one to make it look like they are trying to help us out when they really could careless. u will be lucky to get your tenth pick which probably wasn't a pct u wanted anyway. they need to change the name of the dream sheet to the "hook sheet"

Not really.  Yes,people people with serious hooks can go elsewhere and others are sent to places not on the sheet.  Like everything else, nothing is set in stone on this job.  However the picks on the sheet are, more or less, where people will end up.  Which command they get naturally depends on the phone call.  It's not just the way of the job it's the way of life.  It's not fair but it isn't going to change for me, you or anyone else.  Either grow up and accept it or play the hand you were dealt and don't complain.

If you're like me (I literally knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy) then a call might give you one of your 10 picks or, if nothing else, prevent you from going someowhere you absolutely don't want to go (which is huge).

You shouldn't waste your time on 'dream houses' if you are among the rabble.  Instead, get some intel on some lesser known commands where the competition will be thin.  There are a lot out there.  Then even the 1PP Janitor your father bowls with might be able to help you get it.  That's no joke either.  There are well-liked janitors who can make things happen on this job.

The vast majority of us do not have personal connections with the Brass on this job.  That doesn't mean you should throw up your hands and leave things to fate.  That's suicide.  Ask around and see what you can do.  If you're not a total douche then chances are somebody can and will help you.

I'm just trying to offer some friendly advice.  Take it for what it's worth.
