RE: LATE OCTOBER /NOVEMBER CLASS

I'm still holding out hope, if I understand what everyone is saying correctly, nothing has changed, just there is a whiff that they MAY slow down due to budget tightening. As multiple sources have been saying that all the recent classes right up to this Pre-Promotion class has been in the pipe since June. Just because they have some Lt's and Cpt's going in doesn't mean they still can't accomadate a small 30 to 40 Sgt. Class. If anything it gives weight that having the Lt's and Cpt's may be the reason they couldn't fit in more Sgt's, If indeed, their true intention is to finish the list by the time the recruit class gets out. It's all about the ratio between cops to Sgt's. If that's off, they make new bosses. That's my two cents.

Personally it doesnt matter to me if they promote upfront or not, as long as there is a November class ill be happy. I studied for about 2 weeks a quickly decided that it wont happen this time around.

DV, your on the bottom of the Sgt list so obviously your not that bright. Don't worry, you wouldn't of passed the LT exam anyway. Just be happy you'll eventually be a Sgt.

The budget does not matter to the NYPD never has and never will. They just reported that these protests cost the job over 2 million in OT. Promotions will be done soon

I disagree...The budget did matter when they were hiring 85 recruits per academy class. It mattered when they would hold off sgt promotions for 2-3 months and then only promote 35 sgts (same time period). The department has about 4 different entities of funding. The city, the state, federal funding, and asset forfeiture. Promotions come from city funding. protest o.t is state/federal.

Of course they have a budget. OT and hiring cops are 2 totally different things though. OT is a one time short term thing that they account for in their budget. Hiring cops requires you to pay them for the next 20+ years and not just their salary think benefits also, plus a pension for the rest of their lives. It's financially a huge undertaking that the city has to budget for, like High 600's said.
Promotions don't usually happen this fast you guys are lucky and are getting spoiled, promotions won't keep up at this rate forever.
Think about it.

Heh heh. I think they would actually spend more because top pay cops have to make more with OT than rookie Sgts the first couple of years
Which BMOC class was it when they sent them back to their commands? How long did ths last, a couple of weeks? It was just the one class they did that to, right?

BX Bomber - did I say something to upset you? Because, honestly I don't recall writing anything that would provoke your response? You don't know my list #. You don't know shyt about me. If you're any kind of cop you should know that, where I'm on the list don't mean shyt. And let me save you from getting into the "who has more collars" bullshyt argument before it begins, because I could give a rats ass. I just voiced my opinion like everyone else. Dont like mine. Then skip to the next one or respond with something thats worth while for everyone to read instead of that crap. I'm going to stop now because I'm not here to bash people...I guess you are...

Do you still get promoted after few months later getting out of restricted duty when you couldnt get promoted upon promotion day? Because I am still on restricted duty for LOD and they already passed over my list.

Maybe I'm a little high strung when it comes to this guessing game. That's fine. But next time you decide to call some one "not bright" just remember that everyone on here is not your partner, who you ride around with for 8 hrs. Or for some people, the guy you're desk is next to.

I'm in the range of 35 to 45.

I've been trying to stay positive and hitting the books, but as of last week I'm no longer reviewing. At this point I'm just hopping to get promoted before the end of the year.

The good news is that now we have 4+ years to prepare for the test. And with the likelyhood that the new list will be even slower than the old one, it seems we would all need to score 90+ just to get made. In short, maybe everything happened for the best.

Naa, I think this list will be no more than 300...They will give another one in a year or 2. Only 2700 are taking it! 10% passing is 270! I also stopped reading, Ill wait for the next time around

Cop to Sgt is 10%, Sgt to Lt the passing rate is about 30, 40%!!

Sounds a little high. 2700 take it and 1200 passing??? I say closer to 20% passing, if that.

The last Lt exam 2600 took it and the list ends at 1285, thats pretty close to 50%. When it comes to Lt it's definitely not just score a 70 and you're in.

75% of the cops taking the sergeants test sign up, quit studying after 2 months, maybe go to a few cram classes at the end. They usually wind up in the 62-69 range on the list. That's why the failure rate is so high for that test.

For the Lt test, I'd say in my command about 50% have given up, the other 50% are holding strong. And, you gotta remember, studying is definitely easier for the Lt test since the material is still familiar (unless you took your own Sgt test over 5 years ago).

The 2006 list is a pretty large list but will be the first Lt list to ever be cut. This was during a time when no one was leaving the job too. With all the crap going on with this job I think we're going to see alot more Lt's retiring. I think this next list will move faster than the 2006 one. Definitely more than 600-700 promotions in 5 years. Just my opinion.

The way I see it; Bloomberg is calling for another hiring freeze, the budget in albany has a deficit of two billion?... hopefully it wont go that way, but I feel that after a few more promotions/academy classes everything will stall again.... our paycheck is relative safe, but everybody else is hurting right now, forget a double recession, for many ppl this feels like a triple recession. Those taking the Lt test better score 88+ minimum!!

Didn't they used to set the passing bar not by grade but by the number of people they needed? Didn't it used to not be "70 and you pass" but "we need 1,000 and the top 1,000 people cut off at 82 so anyone 82 and up is in"?

Donnie, that's the way it used to be, when they would give the test every three years or so. Problem was it was more like we need 2,000 Sgts in the next 3 years so we will take the top 2,000 scores. Problem is they were promoting people with scores in the 50's.
NO, I am not joking, my old partner got promoted with like a 58.
They started the 70 passing in 2007, and the list was only like 300 names or something. These last lists are much smaller then they used to be hence the test given much more often since they implemented the 70 passing grade system. Also, they would sometimes not make the whole list, they would establish a list of maybe 2,500 then only promote to say 2,000 or something and the bottom would die on the list.

Oh yeah, I forgot that the cutoff was in the 50s for at least one test... There was a Sgt in my command who recently transferred that was one of those people and he was proud of it haha

Seems to be a slowdown of information, does this mean there is gonna be a slowdown on promotions,
Or is everyone just focused on studying. My opinion is no Sgt class for Nov, and a promotional slowdown all around.

the word is there will still be that "up-front" class for Oct 28th (30-40 people)
