It has been confirmed by Labor Relations that all Sergeants promoted this past May 30th will be jumping to step 5, and staying at step 5 for 5 years (top pay is step 6). This will be reflected beginning on the July 21st paycheck when the PBA retro hits and the new raises kick in. Unfortunately, those promoted before the PBA settled will be going through steps 1-5 normally. The SBA is working to fix these discrepancies. The best advice is to be patient, and call Labor Relations if you want specific details about your situation.
step 5 for 4 completed years...
again you have to complete 4 years to get to top pay
Newly promoted Sergeants have to do 5 years to reach top pay.
Counting in steps for top pay confuses people. When you complete 5 years in rank you begin to get paid top salary. It used to be 4 completed years, I believe this was one of those Selling the unborn scenarios during the last contract.
Wish I could get a decent reply from the union but- anybody have an idea for the implications for someone promoted in 2020? Before the last SBA contract but not yet at top pay, still sitting at 96K until 4th anniversary? We looking at a grievance or what? Fair percentage of the membership in this boat.

Spoke with the boro director and the short answer is they dont have an answer yet. Not suprised with that answer but its remarkable...anyway my opinion is they are still working it out thats why we havnt heard anything
Yeah as usual the union doesnt have much of an answer. I should be speaking to a trustee today and if I get any solid info, Ill be sure to post it. Im also in that 2020 range so we are in the same boat. Spoke to labor relations and they said it looks like we would be stuck in our same steps (not including the percentage raises we will get). If thats the case, assuming a 3/3.5 % raise in the two years, we would be around 102 as the base pay for OUR steps Which is obviously still ridiculous getting paid less than cops, but better than the 96 we are at.
Yea unfortunately any SGT promoted before The ratification is still following the current Steps for pay which is 96,000 base and any SGT promoted after the ratification is now at Step 4 which is 105,000 and they will stay at that rate for 5 years until they reach top pay. Labor Relations has already confirmed this. So unless the SBA reaches some sort of agreement which from what Ive heard it has not been going well then most likely any SGT not at top pay will essentially just stay on their current pay steps. The funny part is after the contract is settled the steps will be adjusted and raised even more for the future SGTs getting promoted to where the new base pay for Step 1 may very well be around or close to current top pay. Hopefully the SBA can try and fix this. A demotion right now to a PO would essentially give you a raise lol.
Legit! I wondered why I got that *hey maybe you should defer your promotion email* when I had already been at this miserable rank for a few years, now I know. Thanks for the responses, appreciated. What a friggin circus.

Yea I was under the impression they would adjust all new SGT in order to keep the pay disparity from occurring but seems like thats not happening. What seems likely is that they are gonna get a deal where 2022 and 2023 we get similar numbers to PBA like say 2.5 - 3.0 maybe even a little higher and that will be our Pay Bump which would still leave us making less than PBA members. But not as much as it is now well just have to see but I think thats what may happen.
I am very pleased to announce that the SBA, as part of the Uniformed Officers Coalition, has agreed to the Uniformed Officers Coalition Economic Agreement. The terms of this agreement are limited to the general wage increases for the period from December 10, 2021, through December 9, 2026. The agreement on the wage increases is only a part of our current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
We will begin negotiating the remaining issues, such as salary steps, work schedules, and peripheral benefits of our CBA immediately. Once we have completed these negotiations, the completed CBA will be presented to the delegate body for approval. If the delegates approve the proposed contract, it will be voted on by the entire SBA membership for approval.
The wage increases agreed to as part of the Coalition will only take effect if the proposed agreement is approved by a majority of the SBA membership.
We will keep you posted on all developments as they occur.
All I know is DB better swap to 10/12 hr tours, or Im packing up my toys and going back to patrol. 4-Sergeant on the air!
you dont care for the overtime?
Keep the 30 hrs. I have a crappy super-commute and kids at home. Were only getting older and people have been dropping like flies these last few years. The more time with them and away from this damn city and job, the better.
Anyone have an idea of when radification of the new contract is going to happen? At this point Id rather wait until 2024 with the Fica number fast approaching, Id rather use it for next year but know its out of my control.
SBA told current bmoc class that it's getting settled September
I can confirm that was said to the current class and last class that just got commands. They are expecting to be finalized in September but I know the 12 Hour Tours are still an issue holding it up apparently the SBA is still very much against it, no clue what the plan is for that. As far as pay there are going to be revised Pay Steps for the SGT, no idea on the amount or how it is adjusted for new and old SGTs.
Heard LTs union want the 12s. They are waiting tor SBA to settle
Yea they already agreed to it Emails to LBA members went out, They agreed because they were guaranteed 2 Lt for each 12 hour tour so for them its gonna work out and it wont affect their headcount if anything, itll bump them up one extra lieutenant for every precinct
Wow. If that actually goes through for LT Union, that will put an additional 100 vacancies in that rank right off the bat. (79 precincts, 12 transit districts, and 9 housing service areas)
The Job will just keep one LT on the 12 hour tour even though on paper they would require 2 Lts. You guys know very well how this job functions.
I didnt want to be that guy. But im glad someone said it. These vacancy numbers are just a formality. The job has to have them and they dont have to do anything. Look how short some commands are bosses and they dont fill the vacancies.
Means nothing. If anything, i can see it affecting the list negatively since theyll have at least a Lt & a Sgt on each tour.

Trust me I agree but I think for the LBA is was the only real way to save face and justify to the members why taking the 12 hours is good for them. And most likely some of the busier A Houses will most likely get 2 LT per 12 Hour Tour the slower commands will most likely get screwed.
Just so everyone knows the new BMOC is getting top pay $118k, labor relations spoke to them.
If the SBA does not work out a favorable contract for all the members including fair pay steps, VOTE IT DOWN
There are approx 1300 Sgts making less than cops and newly promoted Sgts.
Will the next e-mail from the union be about the fact that 20% of the membership is out 22K or about Hershey park/raffle tickets? Absurd. Hope everyone enjoyed their summer off.

So newly promoted Sgts get in person updates about the contract while everyone else gets emails about Hershey park and art calendars? Makes sense.
Alot of us including me would have hoped that they would simply adjust everyone who is not at Top Pay to whatever step is more that the new PBA top pay but we wont know anything until the SBA sends out a contract update which it has been mostly silent thus far. If this is not settled and all SGT promoted before 07/21/23 are stuck on the previous pay chart then the only other option really is to file a grievance and see what happens. Its really going to become an issue next August when PBA members are at 109,000 base and making more than every single SGT on the current pay Steps still making 96,000 base, Its honestly so embarrassing for the Union that they cant figure out how to fix this.
