Does anyone have any insight on current XO schedule/RDOs ? I was under the impression that for the most part XOs worked steady 4x12s with Fri/Sat or Sun/Mon RDOs. I hear that current XOs in PBBN, PBBX, PBQN are doing impact tours with steady Mon/Tues. Some housing XOs in PBMN dont even get steady RDOs.
Any insight on how the schedule works for XOs in each borough would be greatly appreciated. Also, does seniority affect your schedule or does is stay the same. Thanks

There is no steady schedule... at any given week, your RDO might be gone because of a stat / meeting.... don't expect to be able to make plans or have a normal life or you will be extremely disappointed.....
I can never get straight answers from people on quality of life for captains. In person people say its not as bad as people say and everyone online says it's the worse thing to ever sign up for. Any actual captains on here care to give opinions? And please advise if your in detail or pct
I'm a precinct XO. My patrol borough have no issues with XOs taking sunday/monday. You must take into account duties, details, stats, conferences, etc. Duties are picked on a seniority basis, so depending on where you stand, you may have very little options left by the time it gets to you. Until you get higher up in the food chain expect to work weekends, you will gain seniority pretty quick, after your first year you will have decent picks. You can pretty much make the schedule work for you, you don't always do 4x12, it all depends on what tour your CO is working. COs and XOs SHOULD not be working the same EXACT tour. There SHOULD be a 3 to 4 difference between the CO and XO start times. Fridays and Saturdays XOs will most likely work a 3rd or 4th platoon, depending on what's going on in your command.

Appreciate the honest response. Do you have any regrets after accepting promotion? And are you married/any kids where rank ruins home events for you or you make it work to a certain extent.

I have been an XO for a little over a year in a very busy command, (also the busiest in the Boro). As far as your schedule is concerned, it is hit or miss. Generally, XO's have Sunday/Mondays off. You can pretty much take lost time or adjust your schedule as long as there is executive coverage in your command from around 1000 until 2400. Which means that, either you or the CO has to be working (especially on Friday and Saturdays). Most CO's have weekends off, but will come in for big events. You are expected to be a team player and sacrifice personal time, and be working for just about any kind of detail, community gathering, NCO events like toy giveaways, basketball tournaments, etc.
You will be preparing for, and attending the many different "STATS", Boro meetings, community based meetings, etc. Depending on how good you want to do, these meetings can take a lot of time to prepare for.
Generally, you are treated like an adult and have lots of freedom to do as you please during the tour. Someone asked previously on this site, and the answer is: Yes, XO's get category 1 cars.
If you are looking to become a CO, be prepared to give up all of your personnel time and become a "company man". Getting your own command is an extremely competitive endeavor and many do not have the patience, or the network to see it through. Knowing a seasoned CO who will take you under their wing, and mentors you will help a lot. Knowing a Chief or two helps even more. If you are looking for the CO route, start building your network now.
If you are looking to do your 6 months and go to a detail, then you will love the rank. The pressure to not fvck up and impress everyone won't be an issue for you. It is a personal decision that only you can make. Just wait for the right detail for you to open up and go for it.
You will notice that it is a weird rank and takes some time getting used to. About 90% of new Captains will go to a detail within their first couple of years because the "game" can become tiring.
For anyone who is "on the fence" about taking the promotion: It is a no brainer, being a Captain is much better than being a Lt.

details like IAB is easy to get into since they are always looking... the more coveted spots that has no stats / mon - fri 9 to 5 are done thru word of mouth or people that you know... don't even bother applying thru POST because that is BS. A captains transfer has to get signed off by your bureau chief, then the bureau chief of the place you are looking to go, then chief of dept which can take forever unless you know the right people. at the end of the day, it is all about who you know or pretty hard to leave your spot unless it is IAB which I heard its really good for a captain.
I know some captains prefer to have the steady duty. Is that something earned or is a steady duty captain something that helps everyone else out? I assume they dont have to worry about stats. I also know they will be captains for life which some dont care about.
