Only time will tell. There will always be naysayers but nobody truly knows. They may hit the whole list or they may not. Only time will tell. In my opinion there are a lot of factors that work in favor of hittin the whole list but thats just my opinion.

No one knows just yet. I would wait to make such assumptions. We dont or no one knows what direction this department is heading just yet. Lets see what happens in year or so from now. Yea it is huge but who knows. Commons sense is it will get expire but no one knows.

Yanosik said nobody has any idea of knowing where the list will be cut, if it will be cut. He said he expects the list to run its course for 4 years. Anyone around the 1800+ mark should prepare themselves to study again if the time comes and its borderline. Understand where you went wrong on the previous test and study harder for the next.

This is what Yano emailed

Greetings on this frigidly cold day!

I would like to address a question that I have received many emails about.

Will the Department make the whole February 2017 Sergeants Exam list all 2,682 individuals?

Based on history, I would expect the Department to run the list for four years. After four years the list will expire. If they reach your list number in those four years, you will be promoted. If they dont reach your list number in those four years, you will, unfortunately, die on the list.

So what list number will the Department reach?

No one knows! No one can tell the future. It will all depend upon retirements and vacancies. The more Sergeants vacancies there are, the more promotions they will make. The Department can average promoting anywhere from 30 to 55 Sergeants a month.

If you did not make the list (or you are on the bottom of the list), I would highly encourage you NOT to give up.

If at first, you don't succeed, Try, try again. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.

So if you would like me to send you my updated digital Elite PG so you can begin to read just one hour a day on your meal hour, email me and let me know that you would like the Sergeant version (or Lieutenants version) of the Elite PG.

Preparing at work for one hour a day will put you in a position to excel on your next promotional exam.

I wish all my students the best and if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

Stay safe,

Mike Yanosik

I don't disagree with this statement I got the same email. Next LT and SGT exam will probably be around the same time IMO(I'm not expert by any means) but if you start just getting up to date with any changes in the PG it can help whether you die on the sgt list and have to retake the sgt exam or move forward and take the LT exam

I think its more along the lines of preparing for one exam, hoping to take a different exam.

So what was the point of making a list this Big because the original list after throwouts was only 1400.

You guys made the list this big by protesting everything.

The job didnt inflate it because some chiefs stepson got a 70.0001.

Listen i understand you guys need to stay positive but you guys sound very young and new to this promotional exam stuff if you think the job had ulterior motives when they made this list.

The 2006 Lt exam was cut at 756 out of 1185. Sometimes these things happen.

Maybe i will eat my words and they will promote 600 to 700 this year. But if they dont you have to be realistic.

That 2006 Lt exam, was giving in 2006 and they didn't promote until 2008 then big freezes in between classes, so that's not a fair exam to compare to the promotion rate on that list

Remember when everyone said the list wouldn't be above 1200??? They were wrong. Remember when everyone says that a list would never be curved again? They were wrong again. It was curved. I know that for a FACT and you will a see that in time as well. Nobody knows how far this list will go. But I honestly do believe that it will go alot deeper than people think. Cynicism is common on our job. Just because we like to expect and bask in worst case scenarios, doesn't mean they will happen.

Most people attended those protest sessions just to get their score. Had DCAS setup a more efficient way of obtaining your score ( or even allowing to write down your answers), I dont think you would see nearly as many throw-outs.

I was one of the 16 people who took the make up exam. I was expecting to score an 87 but when the list came out I scored a 92. My exam had entirely different questions from the February 22 exam. So someone protesting and getting a question thrown out of the February 22 exam wouldnt effect my score. At my protest review session there were the same 16 cops from the make up test I took. Most of the cops that showed up at the protest didnt protest a single question they found out there score and left. 4 cops stood behind and protested questions. The 4 of us protested approximately 20 questions. Most of the questions we protested we wrote anything down but felt we were wasting our time. There is no way that my make up exam had 5 questions or more to throw out. We barley protested the questions. The test was most likely curved. For me to pick up 5 points and starting with an 87 it would mean half of the question me and 3 other people protested got thrown out. The make up test didnt have 3700 protest questions submitted like the first test. Only 20 questions from 4 people.

im really sorry, but what does curved mean? Do you mean they threw out extra questions just for bigger list? Or do you mean they gave everyone a certain number of points for no reason?

They raised everyone's scores. Some people got more points than others. The variation probably caused by the actual number of throwouts.

That means if the highest grade was a 92 for example then that person will get a 100. (8points extra) and then everyone else who took the test gets 8points added to their score also.

The reason why there was a freeze from promoting on that list is because they finished off and promoted everyone from the 2003 Lt list and the job was over by about 75 Lieutenants.

I believe they curve the exam by 5 points and people picked up extra points from whatever double answers. This is based on myself and other guys I know who actually passed the exam. We all calculated our final score with seniority points and the JST and kinda knew our final score after we attentended the protest, but we all ended up with an extra 5 points after the list was released.

I know how it played out, but it's hard to compare a list now to that 2006 Lt exam, that list took 2 years to start promoting, this current sgt list took one week, can't really compare with the fast class going in, maybe in a year or so you can see how fast they are pushing thru, I think this list will get to the majority of it and the last couple hundred, 2k plus are in the hot seat

Ladies and gentlemen, let's not pass on wrong information. This test is not an example of a curved test. A curved exam works in the opposite of this exam. I've mentioned this. A curved exam is if the majority of people FAILED a test. Then the passing rate would be lowered and centered around what was the average score. For example if everyone fail but most scored a 60 or 57 or 65, then the test would go from needing a 70 to pass to a 60 or 57 or 65 to pass. To get enough people over the "curve" to be put on a list. Hence the term "curved"!!! This test was NOT curved. It was protested. And more then normal protested because it was assumed that if we were separated and segregated then we would not protest. But because we were separated in a protest session (which never happens) we officers also assumed that nobody would protest. So we at our session protested as much as possible. Unknown that we were all actually banning together. As a result. Multiple questions were thrown out. And we're left with a list this size. Now my fellow officers, we need to come together collectively if you wish to see everyone

I will say this again. The test was curved. I was 1 of 16 people who took the make up test. The 16 of us took an entirely different exam with different questions. There was only 4 people who protested approximately 20 questions during my protest session. My protest session consisted only of people who took the make up exam. I protested lots of questions using flawed arguments hoping that maybe the question will get thrown out but in reality I only believed only a couple of questions derserved to get thrown out. If a question was thrown out based upon the protest from the February 22 exam it wouldnt benefit me because I took an entirely different test on February 27. With my points I was expecting an 87 somehow I scored a 92. The odds of protesting 20 questions and picking up 5 points out of 20 is impossible. The people who took the make up test didnt have the benefit of over 3500 protest being submitted for the February 22 exam and yet we still all picked up 5 points.

It's not wrong my friend, this test is not the definition of a curved exam. You are extremely inaccurate it concluded that it it is. As I said an actual curved exam is when the passing score of 70 is lowered to the average of what was actually scored. If must scored a 58 then 70 would be lowered and 58 would be considered passing. That by definition is a curved exam.

They need to promote at a steady pace of 38 a month for me to get made within four years. Im in 1820s and keeping my fingers crossed that they made this list so big with intention of promoting majority. If not then I would have rather failed and at least be able to put in for units that wont touch me now.

I think youre good at that number, yes youll have to wait but youre still okay. But you can still go ahead and apply for units. Its not like youre getting promoted anytime soon. Youve got nothing to lose.

I got into a unit and they knew I passed and was on the list. I personally know people who got picked up by the DB who were on promotion lists

I like your blind optimism. I do.

But if the Lt list is huge and its 1000 people and 500 sgts retire what is the job going to do with a surplus of 1200 extra sgts?

Will each command get an extra 10 sgts then?
