What was your motivation to want the rank of Captain this time around?

What was your motivation to want the rank of Captain this time around?

For me the take home car really helped push me to take and pass this one especially being an upstate guy. I have less than 15 years on the job so I had to give it a shot (plan on doing 25). The money is also great and even though the option to make cash overtime is not that great, it definitely is a good step moving forward with the rank and hopefully future contracts will make the rank even better. I hear a lot of guys talking about finding a detail as a LT and making money but we all know a nice cushy detail can easily come to an end and that OT can dry up (actually just happened to a guy in my unit with over 10 years in the unit). When you do the math a LT still has to live at the precinct to even come close to what a top pay Captain makes. As a Captain I will do my 8 hour tour and occasional extended tour any day. Many talk of the lack of family life as a Captain but I say what is family life as a LT when your living at a precinct away from family just to come close to $200k. If you are staying on the job 25 plus years (which most are) you can't compare the financial benefits between LT & Capt. I don't care what anyone says.  Yeah more responsibility and meetings but I don't mind that with the trade off for GUARANTEED money added to my pension and a extra $9,000 every 5 years and the attractiveness on my resume. I know the rank is not for everyone and thats exactly why Lieutenants stay Lieutenants and some make Captain. I like change and I believe this job has so much to offer. If you retire from this job and don't take advantage of all the opportunities including promotions to help make yourself more marketable when your retire, well thats on you. I'm not trying to sell the rank but I'm sure this is a debate that many of you have and hopefully this sparked some incite.

Very well written. My motivation was that I like change and don't want to follow a CO wherever they go like a lot of LTs like to do. Personally, I think that's weak. I too have under 15 and my conundrum now is 20 or 25. We shall see how this list turns out. I thought there was one floating around, but I never saw it.

Tired of working 5 weeks a month...great post by karatekid! I think its a short term pay cut but QOL is somewhat improved by not living at work. Yes you can make more money as a Lt but you are doing at least an extra week at work and that starts to become tiring. Guess i'm getting old...It's not like any Lt doesn't know what the Capt rank entails. You are fully aware that you are going to have the duty, attend every stat, even the stat for stat, have the duty, work every detail, etc. But just like with every rank we've had, you're a rookie once again but not forever! Change is good but its a decision that each individual has to make for their situation.

I like the idea of being able to calculate my final pension numbers without depending on over time. Especially when you have to hope the new person incharge of assigning OT likes or remembers you and the people above you like you enough to be ok with it. I also want to believe that working less hours will increase my quality of life.

Can't imagine myself working the next 5-10 years under incompetent executives that never did police work. Plus the money.

Unfortunately you will always work for some incompetent executives just a bit less of them

With the lack of LT wanting to even take the test you have to think they wil give some more benefits in the future. They already did with the car and the OT that's allowed to be taken. I passed this last LT exam and every day I wonder if the jump is worth it. I have little ones at home that is my main priority. Would love more money for them but being with them at sports and school events more important.

There was no lack of LTs this time around.  This captain list will run the full four years.

Have any people died on the capt list or do they try to make everyone

This was discussed previously, but it seems based on history that If the list is under 260 names all

will be made.  Looks like the list is around 240 names before throw outs. So well see if it swells much.

It was about the same amount of LTS that usually take a Capt test just double almost triple the passers though, I hope they make the rank even better but doubtful, that last big push was under bratton and reengineering

Shouldnt swell too much considering it was a tight exam and a lower number of people sat for it in comparison to a Sgt or Lt test. Whats the most that are on the cusp of a 70? Cant be too many

The sgt exam seemed fair as well and that thing had throw outs galore lol. Promotional exams on this job are like a box of chocolates. You never know what youre gonna get.

For Sgt., no QUEST sheet.
For Lt., because Sgt. blows.
For Capt., no activity log.

I have contemplated captain all 4 times the test has come around for me. I see the benefits of the pay and not scrambling for OT in your last year and I see the drawbacks of ass kissing, tour changes, and stats. Honestly, I think I do want the rank, but as someone above said, where I'm at now in life, stability is more important. Obviously, this isn't everyone, but every single captain I know either has no children, an infant, or much older children. If you are looking to have kids, right now is the time to get promoted. When they're 4-10 years old and looking for their mother/father to be around, at least you'll have seniority to have somewhat of a normal schedule. I'll be retired before the next test ever comes around, but I'm satisfied knowing I'm never missing a hockey game/tournament or dance recital.
PS not being on patrol made this decision infinitely easier!!

As an XO what exactly are the rules and restrictions for the take home car ? Where are these cars permitted to be parked if you live in the five boroughs. Thanks.

You can park it in front of your house wherever you live. No personal business or unauthorized people in the cars.

Good point! can't believe this test was computerized and its taking this long...especially since they should've figured out what the "scaling" or whatever method they're using for the Lt and Sgt exams.  Anyone know how long their lists took to come out? Anyone have any word on our list?? TIA
