This October, the floodgates were flung wide open when numerous women accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Since then, the list of men who have been accused of misconduct has grown exponentially. In some cases, they have resigned, been blackballed or fired. Today is it John Lasseter, the head of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation. Yesterday it was Charlie Rose. Before them, it was Al Franken, Louis C.K., Roy Moore, Jeffrey Tambor, Brett Ratner, Andy Dick and Kevin Spacey. And before October, many of these same men must have felt untouchable, having been allowed to continue their exploits.
There is a similar villain currently employed by our own department who has been allowed to prey on POs, Sgts and other ranks below his impeccably majestic, white shirt. It began when he was placed in a position of power in Manhattan and has continued into the Bronx. This self-righteous, JR. BA**** CHEESEBURGER has forged a path of embarrassment, grief and helplessness wherever he is assigned, without any sense of responsibility or culpability. And in some case, his own superiors have heard the whispers about his behavior but have remained silent.
Now the department cannot and should not shoulder all the blame but it could step up and do a better job of protecting its own officers rights. While a number of officers do report sexual harassment on the job, far too many choose to stay silent as they fear for their reputations and, even their jobs. The time has come to do better
