I'm taking Elite again.
When I went to pick up my stuff yesterday, it looked awfully quiet. I wonder if less people will be taking this test or if it is just very early on.

How many people were there? I suspect its Rising Star entering the live class arena and taking a piece of the business. The other schools can't be too happy about that.

I didn't stay for the whole orientation, I just picked up my stuff and left but I was there for about 10 minutes at the time it was supposed to start and I only saw 6 people.

That Elite guide is a joke. It is seriously dumb. He points out the most obvious things, like REMEMBER: "you check the reports for the PREVIOUS 24 hours"! No kidding! I thought you would check the crime reports for the next 24 hours--before they happen. lol

Also the IO's are confusing as hell. There are no more interim order ink changes since they are automatic now with the online PG. It seems he got lazy (or hasn't gotten around to) editing it.

Like I said, it may work for some. But it took me double or triple the time to learn the material.  Just go to his site and check out his sample lessons. Check out his desk officer video learning for a good laugh.

I'm just glad I don't have to study again for this test

Your bashing his elite guide but according to my knowledge he is the originator of such a guide that gives more information unlike the original NYPD issued patrol guide.

Interm order ink changes. ...please explain?

Mike updates his elite guide via watchdox with 24-48 hrs of any change. He doesn't do ink changes. For his printed Elite guide he makes a pdf file of the procedures with the new changes.....you print them out and place it in your binder. When the cutoff date is announced he has a shrink wrapped packet with all the changes since his elite guide was printed. So you tear out the ones you printed and put in the new updates.

Desk officer video learning? Do you mean the interactive learning modules? If so, they are another study aid you can use to enforce what you already should be reading via the elite guide.

When interim orders come out they are now automatically part of the patrol guide. the Elite guide still updates them the old way where the interim order is highlighted gray and the interim order date next to it, like IO 35/15 or something like this. He got old ones going back years. he really needs to clean it up and edit it so its not confusing. Reading the book gives me a headache bec of that and all the boxes that basically points out exactly what I just read. If he is going to do that then he should go deeper a bit and explain the procedure. ALso, alot of his conflict alerts are wrong and are not real conflicts if you read the guide. Overall, the guide gets a C+

this criticism is as a former elite student. Did I pass the test? yes. Did I pass because of elite? hell no. I would have failed if I didnt do rising star on the side. Thing is, for every 4 hours of elite i did i did 1 hour rising star and i got more value out of that one hour.

just my 2 cents

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. No issues. I would like to see what Rising Star has to offer.

I passed the 2015 LT exam as well and I do credit Mike for giving me the information in different formats so I can digest the information which caters toward my learning style.

I would say that rising star is very good and I did use them for the 2011 sgts exam. I did their questions while also doing the key and KSA which is now defunct.
When I study for captain I will use them in addition to Elite.

Does Rising Star plan on doing just the questions anymore?

Exactly! You gotta do 2 schools if you want this. Can't take any chances. I signed up for Rising Star for my sergeants test and they stopped selling their questions then. I also signed up with  for this sgt test when i thought I was going to die on my list due to an incident I rather not  get into. Lol. They were nice enough to apply my tuition for this lieutenant exam and I was told by them that they have no intentions of selling just the questions. I can forward you their email if u want. Just im me.

I didn't have a chance to take the last Lt's exam and I know a lot of people were upset over it for obvious reasons. All I know is that I took Elite for the 2013 Sgt's Exam and yes the course isn't perfect and Yano prob does more than he can handle being the only instructor. However I feel his patrol guide is the best and accessible via tablet. I know a lot of other people are making that available now but their basically copying Yano. He basically provides all you need but don't waste your time unless you're going to actually read the patrol guide itself. His packets are helpful after having done the reading and really solidifies the material. If I found myself having difficulty with the packet info then I went back and read the procedures again. I'm extremely happy with how well I did on the exam and for that reason I feel I need to stick with what worked for me personally. i also spent money on the Key questions app, which I used along with yano's review questions. I highly recommend the Key app! But as far as courses go - Elite

the last Lt exam was where rising star won me over. You have to do what works for you, but doing the rising star questions along with what you're doing is a must in my book. Like I tell my guys (and gals), do classes and you will pass. Do rising star and you will do well. I do realize that not everyone is aiming for a high 80 or 90's and that a 70 is just fine. for those folks then I guess 1 school is fine

This is the way I explain it to my people when they ask about schools:

You should only study for each rank ONCE. That being said, do it right the first time and give it all you got. No shortcuts. Prepare for a hard exam and hope for an easy one. With that being said, Rising Star is the ONLY way to go. Difficult school that will challenge you? YES. I want to be challenged BEFORE the exam and see all the tricks of the trade with crazy questions, cause once I do, it ain't happening to me twice (meaning on test day). The other schools all failed for me in that way. The questions were too easy and gave me a false sense of security. They did nothing to show me the "angles" of how test writers trick you and how you should actually read the guide to UNDERSTAND, not just memorize. There is a world of difference there and Rising Star's material does just that. Plus the questions are far above anyone elses and everyone acknowledges that. I heard that guys who went to their live sergeant cram review had their heads turned around on how to answer questions and read the guide. If you're serious and can handle the challenge, Rising Star is the ONLY way to go. Do it ONCE, do it RIGHT. Then again, I do admit that everyone is different, so to each his/her own....good luck peoples.

I took The Key for Sgt, back in 2011 and failed. I then took Elite and pass with a good score. Yano's course is more interactive friendly, with recorded class videos, ELF, LMS, Class handout and the Elite Essential Guide, I had enough material to pass and do good on the test. Yano is available 24-7 for any question that one may have, cant beat that. Someones said that they dont just want to pass, that they wanted to be challenge.....OK.....whether you get 100% or a 70% you will still be call LT. I took two different courses and one help me do what I needed to do and I will always put my trust on Yano...Because, Elite gives me the tools to get a good score, but at the end of the day, Im the one who has to put the puzzle together to pass. This is something that I didnt find with The Key, however, I am starting to see The Key use more techonoligy, so I guess they learn to adapt.

Um, well...i hope you luck, BUT, if you're going to put in the same amount of time studying wouldn't you want a better score? If another school will "challenge" you and get you a higher score isn't that better? I only say this bec. there are a lot of unhappy students with Yano and key who failed the last lieutenants test bec they didn't challenge them. This is a big commitment and a little insurance can't hurt.

During the last SGT and couple of LT's exams a certain individual (Capt. ass wipe V) created a test that was deemed deplorable by the administration. This jackass wanted payback and he got it. That is why he was replaced and forbidding from ever touching promotional exams ever again. So no matter how challenged you were everyone that passed had a "Lucky" Saturday and yes I include myself. However, that being said, Elite gave me all the necessary tools to pass and get promoted. I can only speak about my experiences with these two courses. Can RisingStar be better and more challenging? Maybe, but as long as Elite delivers, I will never know.

Like you said above, in the end, it's all up to you. But also on another note, the rising star questions are on a whole other level. Although I would have been prepared for a regular test with the other schools, rising star is def the reason I passed. The way they break things down is just a little different. I wouldn't go as crazy as lieutenantorbust with doing all 3 but there is some merit in doing two schools. Or I should say a school and rising star.

....and don't make the mistake that a lot of people make and do the rising star questions in the end. You have to do them as you're studying. It's a waste of time to read the patrol guide and then a do their questions and realize that you misread it or missed an important point. Best to fix something early on.
With all that said, I have not attended a rising star class since they weren't live when I was studying. But given their track record and the quality of their material I wouldn't hesitate to go with them and only them.

Thank you to everyone on the forum. I decided to join Rising Star JUST for extra questions. I have no insterest in their PG although I'm sure it's pretty good. I think 2015LtTest is on the money need to do the questions as you go along. That helped me with the 2013 Sgt's exam but I supplemented Elite with key questions back then.I still stand by Yanosik though and truly believe he's the way to go as solo or main class. I did very well on the 2013 exam and was within the top 3% thanks to Mike Yano. I studied my ass off and plan on going harder this time around. Goodluck gentlemen!

The one thing that was a pain in the ass with rising star was the new paper they use for the questions. It prints up black when you photocopy it and if you feed it through the copy machine it gets stuck. lol!!!
