Rumor has it that PC-Elect Bratton wants to create a Corporal rank. They are saying this rank will basically take away a lot of responsibility from the Sgts. A Sgt will not loose any power, but he won't have to deal with a lot of crap that they deal with, leaving it to the Corporal.
Corporal pay scale to be between top pay PO and detective. This rank will basically give basic decision (not supervisory) making abilities to senior competent members on patrol. If the rank is implemented it will be discretionary and a patrol guide procedure would be established as to the duties and responsibilities of a corporal.
The main purpose for the rank is to provide patrol officers incentive to obtain higher evaluations and do more than the minimum required. The rank will provide members who don't want to be investigators or supervisors with a goal. The new commissioner feels that a corporal rank will drive many senior "do nothing" cops into hard working machines who want the pay raise....
He is probably right. Heck I would work harder of someone put a higher paycheck within my reach. Why else are we getting promoted and studying for exams?
My source isn't the rant. There are plenty of published articles online and quotes from Bratton himself. LAPD does have a corporal rank and bill likes the moral booster it provides. It also alleviates having sergeants responding to jobs to state the common sense obvious about the nature of the complaint.
Getting rid of the DI rank? I don't think that will ever happen. This is all speculation anyway. Bratton is simply stating what he would like this department to look like and be like. Doesn't necessarily mean any of this will ever happen...
Apparently, the idea of 12 hour tours is being thrown around as well. Everything is rumor and speculation at this point. The guy isn't even in office yet

the corporal idea is great. For anyone who hasnt been a patrol superv. at times you feel like a glorified sector. Think ab out it, the corporal position kills two birds with one stones. It makes the sgt job easier and frees him up to supervise!!! Then it builds the moral of the job! it should be given to those guys with 15 years on the job who actually work. IM not talking about the guys who bring in 3000 summonses, im talking about my guys on patrol who bring in what they have to bring in but their presence alone makes you know the job will be handled right. Ive encountered acouple of these guys when i was on patrol and ill never forget them.
