Then you would be insane to take it! If u have less than 15 and on patrol, you should probably take it. However, I think I'd rather be a platoon commander than the XO of a Precinct.
2 years in rank to get promoted. It just occurred to me that there are going to be a sergeants studying for Captain by going to the free classes at the academy meant for cops!
Any of you guys know if any of us who are in the low 400s will be able to get promoted in time to take the next Capt test?
Probably not but you'll be a shoo-in for the May 2014 Captain's exam.
If they're administering an exam November 2013, there will not be another exam in 6 months (May 2014). I am in your boat too still waiting. We are probably looking at early-mid 2015 for another test
You need 2 years in rank as a lt to get promoted to captain...and I know that a lot of ppl who are getting promoted off this list have less than ten years on the job and most of them will be taking the captain's test because they don't want to be lieutenants for an entire decade (nothing wrong with it depending where u work)...that is including myself..
PS the positive can be retiring with a little bump in your pension if you stay in the rank of captain for 5 years..DI pay does look sweet at retirement.
I am already going to trafficstat and platoon commander meetings as of now. Going to even more meetings, like blaststat, compstat, etc. even more frequently with no end in sight since any higher promotion would be political and even if I made DI or full bird, I may likely still go to the frequent board room meetings to get berated.
Also splitting RDO's, frequent duty captain duties which is basically the guy holding the bag for the biggest bags of shyt in his patrol boro on any given day, no cash overtime, I am really having a hard time of seeing the upside?
Yeah, making more money is good, but the the quality of your life with no end in sight other than retiring is kind of sad. It would be nice if the job eliminated many of these meetings, but it seems like they are adding more.
These meetings are laughable too, all they do is waste everyone's time studying stats to everything, most of which hardly even matters! I mean trafficstat you can have good numbers and you get that gotcha moment of a motorist or bicyclist randomly being photographed making an improper turn at a random time of the day and you get berated. Its pathetic, some media outlet should do an expose on this. Getting pressured, yelled at, and threatened for nonsense. Yup, the modern higher ranking NYPD...
So don't take it. Why post the negatives of taking the test? Are you trying to convince us not to take it or convince yourself not to? It's a personal decision based on your current assignment and how much time you have on.
Just saying, they should throw us a bone to be captain. Consecutive days off maybe? Splitting days off that rotate along with hours that rotate too? I guess if you want no social life for the rest of your career and your wife/husband/significant other doesn't mind never seeing you, its not so bad.
I am not trying to convince anyone not to take to the test or to take test, just pointing out that the treatment you will get from the job will be far worse than at any other point in your career. If you are a Lieutenant making a decent amount of OT, I just don't see the upside.
Maybe someone on here can explain the upside? I would love to know how many chart days you get, how is it to take a day off, how long to top pay, if your schedule can be predicted well in advance or they set the rotating tours on a whim?

I hear you the rank sucks. I'm going to take anyway for pension purposes but not too happy about it.
Good luck to you guys taking the Captains exam. I have zero ambition to study for this exam. I am finally back in OCCB doing 40 to 50 hours a month easy OT. Sgt over her not so easy lol.. Average top pay LT here in OCCB doing 40 to 50 hrs a month is pulling 175K+. I understand all the guys hired after July 2000 wanting to be Captain due to pension reasons, with your last year only being pensionable, but I am lucky and I am in in the best 3 consecutive year average era. One more decent contract and Lt's in OCCB could be making close to 200K with OT. They can keep the split RDO's 9 hour tours, Traffic stat, Dom Stat, 4x12 duty and at 2330 hrs being notified your doing a double into the midnight, the list goes on and on lol. I was a SOL before going back to OCCB so I feel your pain with all the stupid redundant meetings they force on us. Good Luck on the exam

"Needs of the department".that's all you need to know
I've been going back and forth on the whole capt's rank. I agree with both the positive and negative statements. As far as the money, you can make as much as a capt if not more as a Lt, but that all depends on where you work. One can argue the previous statement that as a capt the money is guarantee but we all know that capts work plenty of overtime, the only difference is they don't make the cash overtime. The quality of life is definitely better as a Lt but I think you are all forgetting one major motivator, and that is ego. For some guys is not about the money is about being a capt in the NYPD as cheesy as that sounds. You know most of the capts and aspiring capt hope to be a chief on this job one day, although most won't come remotely close. As for me, I'm going to take the test but I'm not putting much effort into the studying. I blew my load on the Lt's exam. lol
