Considering there's a large number of lieutenants in rank less than 3 years and with the city looking to throw zero's at most of the unions, the LBA should consider getting chat days back for the membership in lieu of zeros. Think about it, a Sgt works 8:57 and gets 28 chart days and LT 8:45 with zero chart days for the first 3 years and minimal increases thereafter. When a newly promoted LT takes rank they forfeit their 28 chat days which equates to around $15k. Now as a newly promoted LT you take a minimal raise the first 2 years with no chart days. Work 8:45 and get paid for 8. You're actually giving the city money for the promotion. When you hit top pay your raise is paid for by cashing in your 28 chart days.
Just a thought for the membership during contract talks.
By the time the union settles with the city most of us will be a top pay. I would definitely love regaining chart days even if it means foregoing retro.
After 5 years in rank as a Sgt, you get 3 additional chart days on top of what you've been getting already. So if you're on patrol it goes from 7 chart days per year to 10 chart days(2 weeks), in addition to 3-day swings... If you're in a steady chart it goes from 27 chart days per year to 30 chart days(6 weeks)..... So you work roughly a month and a half more when you get promoted to Lt, if you're on patrol it's actually 7 weeks more. (26 days from the extra day of 3-day swings)+(10 chart days). To put that into perspective, we get 5 weeks vacation per year + 2 IVDs. Something not right with the math there.
I would take time off with my family over pennies extra in the pension any day. It's retarded that they make these trade offs for a little extra $$. This is a job, not my life.
can someone give me any insight on if the LT rank is worth it based on losing the chart days and being held more responsible for your platoon??? I keep hearing Lts state that the sgt is now the best rank. To me, i believe its worth taking that jump and suffering. In the end, more opportunities come with being a LT
is the stress level more or less?? besides the comp stat meetings, most lts i know have a piece of the weekend as a rdo.....and mostly get off any day/holiday they want since 2 sgts will be there.
Yeah, Lt rank is def better. I will take getting yelled at perhaps once a month at a Platoon Commanders meeting or comstat or trafficstat meeting, but getting any day off I want and answering to no one other than the CO/XO on any given day.
Working as a Sgt, I would have to ask my Lt if I could take this day or that day. Holidays I would have to either work or work something out with other Sgt's. Lt, you only come in if you want to and come and go as you please...
"If you count chart days as monetary value" Okay, when I go to pay my electric bill I'll just write "1chart day" on the check...that should fly. And by the way, this rank is no piece of cake...ton of responsibility. If u get an SOL spot you're looking at sol meetings, blaststat, borostat, Compstat, domstat, quarterly licensed premise meetings, community council meetings...and on and on and on.

Can you write a $300 check to get a day off to go to your kids basketball game? No. Time is money.
I have plenty of time banked up , not concerned about that. And all those chart days as a sgt aren't worth **** when every 28 you put in gets denied. Like a previous poster said...I have every Sunday off and if I need a Saturday, chances are I'll get it and you'll be sitting on the desk. With rank comes certain privileges.
The OT usually gets adjusted when you are a Lieut, but the dollar figure stays the same. It's by far better to be a Lieut within a detail. It's the best of both worlds, off when you want and more money. If you make 35 hours as a Sgt, you make lets just say for example 30. It still adds up to the same amount of cash.
