Does anyone know where it says that a 5 year Captain gets a DI pension and a 10 year Captain gets an Inspector's pension? Have heard it throughout my career but can't seem to find where it's stated. Thanks in advance.

It is in fact true that 5+ years =DI salary and 10+ years =Insp salary. The provision is buried in the NYC Admin code. Specifically, section 14-114. The following is taken from that section:
"When a captain shall
have served in the rank of captain for a period of ten years, he or she
shall have the same rights in respect to the police pension fund as a captain detailed to act as inspector who shall have served as such for a period of time aggregating two years. A captain who shall have served as such less than ten years and more than five years shall have the same rights in respect to such police pension fund as a captain detailed to act as a deputy inspector who shall have served as such for a period of time aggregating two years."
very interesting. so that means the numbers used for pension purposes will be whatever the base pay is of a 2 year DI or 2 year Insp? i believe the 2 year DI pay is actually less then top pay capt right now.

I was under the impression that a Capt getting promoted to DI goes straight to DI top pay since the first step of a DI is less than Capt top pay.
As you can see a Captain getting promoted to DI will be taking a paycut in each of the first 3 steps so I'm asssuming they will go straight to top pay DI (since you can't get a paycut when promoted).
Captains contract Section 2. Rates Upon Advancement:
a. An employee appointed, promoted or detailed to the next higher rank shall be advanced to the step rate of such higher rank, salary of which is next above the rate received immediately prior to such advancement. U will not take a decrease in salary if promoted to DI, Insp or Deputy Chief. I included all ranks because there have been a few selected individuals on this job who advanced more than one rank at a time.
Well if i am following everyone correctly, it seems that u will get a pay increase from the 121k to the 128 k, however u will get screwed by getting promoted to DI as a 3 yr capt.
