It depends being a detective is cool...... When your a sergeant your a supervisor..... Det/cop is basically the same rank just more work and pay....all three ranks are great just depends what's better for you

correct me if im wrong but isnt becoming a detective a promotion??? and i realize its a sergeant forum, im asking as a personal choice.
Usually you make more money as a detective (obviously a sgt can enter those units you just mentioned as well) so everything depends what your motivation is.

Most detectives I know are 3rd grade. For a 3rd grade to make more then a top pay Sgt that makes minimal OT, that detective would have have to do about 40 hours a month. I think I can see a clear winner here.
Nah gotta say a top pay cop who does 40 a month makes more than a top pay sgt
Agree, if I'm not mistaken a top pay 3rd grade detective makes 88k base and top pay sgt makes 98k. With 40 hours a month a detective will make significantly more than a typical sgt (a sgt on patrol and not a specialty unit).
I thought about it. Till an old timer detective said being a detective sucks. I mean being a sergeant sucks too but you gotta become one to become the best rank on this job LIEUTENANT!
Detective is a nice achievement to have on your resume as a sgt. Some guys aspire to be first graders making buku bucks in a dea or FBI task force. Others want to be bosses. Depends what you want. You can make mOney either way.
Personally I'd rather work smarter than harder. Top pay cop needs to work how many hrs OT annually to equal what a Boss makes walking in the door? Also supervisory rank for a post career resume looks better- unless truly wanna stay on an investigatory career after retiring. I guess it's a personal choice we all make but once the rank Of Detective losses it's luster many take the Sgt exam.
as a top pay cop i was pulling in 50 hrs a month and making tons of money (so i thought)........so much so that i never even thought of being a boss until i had 12 yrs OTJ.........i then made the decision and took a $20K paycut the first year......$15K cut the second year.........top pay Sgt happened and i was getting around the same as I was as a cop WITHOUT pulling the OT......I actually got to go home after my tour and was making that "tons of money" i was..........NOW as a Lieutenant (not even at top pay.....and minimal OT).............LIFE IS GOOD (and making way more than i would have been if I were still a cop)
As someone who was a Detective and is now a Sergeant. I personally think being a Detective gives you a different mindset on things. For example, when you respond to a shooting or serious crime your handling it as a Boss but also as a Detective because you know how important certain things are.............like not letting the person that called 911 leave without the squad talking to them, or looking into the crown for known parolees/gang members/or perps in general that will give the squad a jump on the investigation. And also being a Detective should give you an advantage on supervisor reports like 49s. I had a GREAT time as a Detective and learned things I never would have. I have no regrets about waiting some extra time to become a Boss. In fact it worked out........straight to top pay for me. Even if I was a 5 year Boss I wouldnt be at top pay, but I am because I was a Detective, so money wise I won. I say if your young enough and know you want to be a Boss, go to OCCB get your shield then study. That shield will open many doors for you as a Boss. Good Luck to all

I really don't know how guys can't understand that concept. It's only a "paycut" temporarily and an immediate increase in quality of life. Explaining this to some cops is more painful then getting a tooth pulled. For a cop to catch a top pay Sgt they will have to live at the Pct. I rather live in my house.
Ghettogunslinger is on pt and the instant top pay is great as well as the post-job resume. Any type of security gig for a supervisor with an investigative track background you're instantly in. Yet the work that needs to be put in for 18 months minimum for that shield can be a lot for just say an older cop with a wife and kids at home. I sacrificed 6 months instead of 18 yet now will wait for top pay. I think bottom line is try and make a move regardless- we all have a minimum of 20 years to better ourselves, careers and pockets. Just stay safe and smart doing it.
My motto is the more you move around the faster those 20yrs go by. With such movement you learn more things and build your resume up. Its not only good for your career but also you get a little sense of accomplishment and sanity.
so its worth waiting defering the promotion until you get your shield and then putting your name back on the list. if i did the math correctly you would be recieving an extra 50 grand or so if you have to only defer for 1 year.
