Sgt's as investigators?

Out of curiosity, any departmental units (aside from IAB/other cop hunters) where sgt's serve as investigators? I had always wanted to go the detective route, but with a promotion coming in the next year or so, it doesn't seem likely that I'll ever make it. Always wanted to do investigations, but I know that as a boss my options are severely limited. Thanks!

School Safety or Traffic Investigations isn't half bad, you'll deal with a lot of civilian MOS nonsense and make overtime. Even a borough investigations unit isn't terrible.

OCCB sgts don't do any actual investigations. They just sign **** and get paid a lot of money. IAB sgts actually do investigations. If you had to go to the rat squad try to get the police impersonation unit. They still do real police investigations as opposed to which hunts...other units give you investigative experience but nothing that you actually go out and make collars for. Good luck

DA Squad, JTTF or Special Victims, maybe?

Precinct FIO is always a good option as well.

You could try investigating things while you're the 75 impact sergeant or the 44 midnight sergeant; because that's where you're probably headed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Well obviously, I won't get to any of those units out of BMOC...I'm strictly speaking for down the line, with time in rank and a lot of luck. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

The only way you can get to these units is if you do your 2 years in IAB or you have some invest. Experience either as a detective or PO in some type of investigative work. JTTF, DETF, FIU, DA, you have to have the experience. These are units that are not easy to get into. Once you get to your command trying jumping in a Crime Sgt spot if it comes up. That is your best chance to get to the bureau. FIO is not a spot they give anyone. They usually give it to guys who have dealt with CIs and search warrants because that is what they expect from you . The only ones that will directly go to a squad out of BMOC are Lts. Especially if chief of Dets. Liked your work. Goo luck brother and all the best .

It is not necessarily true that you have to have IAB or investigative experience as a cop to get into investigative units as a boss, however like most things on this job for most of the more lucrative positions, you do need someone to make a phone call for you. That being said, that phone call could easily come from a CO who you worked hard and brought in good results for. YMMV
