Just wondering how much a top pay Captain...on average...makes a year. I would venture to say around $165,000. I understand the argument of a Lieutenant who is "killing it" in overtime not being interested in or taking promotion if they pass...but what is the argument for a Lieutenant who does minimal overtime not taking the promotion. Aren't we all doing this for our pensions anyway??? Just curious.
I believe you answered your own question. A Lt. in a sweet detail making on average 25-35 hours a month should not take the promotion if he/she will be retiring within a few years. He/she would need to reach top pay Captain before he/she recovered from the monetary loss. The key is to obtain a rank and detail with very few headaches. That rank has always been Lt, no longer is that the case. Captains are no better than an Lt., when you are belittled by wrinkled old men you'll eventually regret even getting promoted to Lt. let alone take the rank to Captain.

ive always heard the reason to get promoted to captain financially is the DI pension after a certain period in rank (5 years???) Is that no longer a motivating factor??
5-years in rank = DI pension; 10-years in rank = Insp. pension. Another benefit in making captain is the ability to use your time (vacation, comp time, terminal leave, etc) without having to worry about OT.
For a top-pay lt. to receive the same pension as a 5-year captain he or she would have to average 40+ hours of overtime a month. If you take terminal leave or vacation you still have to make-up for those hours (that is why some waive their terminal leave).
At this point in my career, I don't have an interest in the rank of captain. Obviously a top pay captain is making more money than a lieutenant without o/t. My issue is that as a captain you are going to make o/t whether you like it or not and your schedule is going to suck for a while. I don't think that as a lieutenant you are going to be working any harder than a captain and still be able to make as much money as a top pay captain. I think the difference is, the quality of life. Most captain I've spoken to had nothing positive to say about the rank. That being said, I haven't discounted the possibility of taking the rank all together.
