wow. 172K. Really having a battle in my head whether that could be worth it or not. For a while I have been dead set against going above LT, but now I'm starting to consider it. How about you guys?
Nassau, I agree with you and was always all for staying put at Lt. However, look at it this way. There are approx. 450 Captains in the Dept. Let's say about 100 commands (include housing/transit/task force, etc) 1 CO and XO each. (Although more and more pct CO's are DI + nowadays) That leaves over 200 other Capt slots (details, sub-units, etc) to shoot for.
Besides the money, this job is always trying to fukk it's employees. I figure the higher up I go the less I get fukked!! Especially if they ever pass that law saying OT is not included in your pension (even if it were only new hires) it's nice to know that that money is your salary and won't be touched. Never know what could happen in the next 5, 10 15 years!!!
My two cents, i retired as a Lieut., at my 20 yr. believe me whe i say no Capt or DI that i know of can even come close to my pension numbers. If you are planning on doing only 20 yrs, dont listen to all the bs about the rank. The lieutenant rank is the best and only good rank in this job. But if you are going to cry about chart days and 845 tours. You should be a Capt., The first yr a little rough like any rank, but once you land on solid ground and hustle, the sky is the limit. I worked patrol in Bklyn, more OT then i can handle. Maybe is bcus my age. But these new young lts dont want to work OT. I just took it all. Ot that you oly have to show up. To small or midium job goes to the sgt, ot small or not midium goes to the Capt.,,,,
I hear ya, but I think I forgot to mention that I only have 8 years on. If you're going to hit LT before 10 I think it is definitely worth taking cpt. 10 years in rank at captain is giving you a better pension than Lt. I don't want to be spending the tail end of my career doing 300 hrs of ot, not to mention that there aren't many places that have that ot available. Plus I don't think it's crying about chart days. Thats a legitimate gripe. Who the fukk wants to work an extra hour a day for free. I think Lt is a great rank if I stay there for the rest of my career thats fine. But, I'll definitely take a shot or two at cpt.
