Statistical comparison to the 2010 Captain's Exam

When the proposed key for the Captain's exam came out 68 people scored 70% or higher.  If I remember correctly approximately 450 people took the test.  That is a 15% passing rate.

With this test, the rumor is that 241 people scored a 70% or higher.  Approximately 2500 people took this test.  This means that only 9% of the test takers scored a 70% or higher.

The Captain's test had 7 throwouts, 7 double answers, and 1 triple answer and the final list was 128.  That brought the pass rate to 28% of all test takers.

If there are numerous throwouts and the size of the list doubles to 500 it is still only a 20% pass rate.

This signals to me that this test had even more problems than the Captains exam.  I believe it is very possible that there will be at least as many throwouts and/or double answers for this test.

What do you think?

I say they dont throw out too much because the list should not be too long because of the present rate of promotions.  I say they dont go past 500 (just my own speculation of course)

I agree with you Brat.  Here is a question though.  How legitimate is the protest and review process?  I believe that there were serious problems with many of the questions.  Based on the reaction from test takers that is evident on this web site there are many protests to many questions.  Basically, what I am curious about is how much does the city's need for a longer or shorter list weigh in on the review process.

I personally REALLY believe its a scam. They decide how big a list they want, based on their own agenda, i.e. how many LT's they calculate they'll need in the next few years, and punch some numbers and throw out questions accordingly. Just my own conspiracy theory of course, but I've talked to many people who believe the same too.

I think that's exactly how it will go down.

I really hope you guys are right. My thinking on this is they will throw out at least 7. those 7 just have to be good for you. And remember the panal consists of 1 LBA, 1 PD and 1 DCAS. that means the Dept has a lot of juices in deciding what they want. And the LBA wants as many new members as it possible. Lets just be positive.

this process is killing me. but  you have to be in the fight, to win it. all i need if 5 more points, and most of the protest questions people are talking about i got wrong.

good luck to all.

YOU WILL MAKE IT. YOU WILL GET YOUR 5 POINTS, AND MAKE THE LIST. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ. IT LOOK LIKE AT LEAST 7 BUT IT MANY GO AS HIGH AS 10. THE CAPT EXAM WENT TO 15. JUST KEEP THE FAITH!

Good point about the test validation board members. Hopefully that will insure legitimacy in the review process. I really believe this exam has major flaws.

I was just browsing the DCAS website. They have alot of answer keys for prior tests archived. I don't have the energy right now to cite specifics but it seems that these tests are getting worse. The last Capt test had 15 throwouts/double answers. That is ridiculous. Who wrote these tests? I think the 02 Capt's test had 2 throwouts. I think the 06 Lt test and 06 Sgt test had 2 or 3 double answers. I was also going through blog posts for the 2010 Capts test on ExamX. Alot of the complaints are the same as ours....The test was poorly written. Obscure questions with vague answers, etc. How many other test takers took this last LT. exam and questioned the same? This test was filled with typos, misspellings, grammatical errors, run-on sentences....and then....the test writers include a section on grammar and "Standard proper English". What a joke! Oh yeah, anyone remember "Department Manuel"? Who else feels the same way??

I noticed the same thing (Marty32). The more I read the test, and went over the questions, it became apparent that whomever was involved in this used the 6 months assigned to dcas to bull****, and during crunch time wrote really bad questions. The entire exam seemed to be marred with errors. I just didn't have enough time to scrutinize it more, I'm sure I would of found more garbage!

The double standard sounds about right for the job. The test writers who can't spell correctly, or give us inbaskets with similar/same exact names but no tax numbers, and a calendar with duplicated dates, are going to test our superb knowledge of "Standard Proper English."
Have any of you ever scrutinized some of the captions on these department forms? Some of the spelling mistakes are pretty embarrassing and funny.
Typical "do a I say not as I do" stuff for the department.

do you remember the question that said....."this report was due like yesterday" and the LT platoon commander had to decide what way he will do it. well "due like yesterday" is slang or ebonics. its suppose to say, past due or overdue. they have the nerve. they did the wrong thing by giving a insane test, hopefully they help correct it.

Wasn't that phrase in quotes in the question stem? Somebody was addressing you, correct?
