RE: LATE OCTOBER /NOVEMBER CLASS

Are you guys convincing yourselves that Sgt is the rank to be? The way I see it, Lts goes to the Sgts to his work, cops go to Sgts with their problems and Sgts still have to do their own work. With some OT most Lts make at least 140+k/year and a sgt?

I'm responsible for my squads activity and drama and trust me that is more than enough, I see what my Lt goes through being responsible for the whole Plt. and getting ready to go to his Bi-weekly Plt commanders meetings. It's alot of work That's my point. LT's aren't having you do "their" work, you have enough to do with communications, monthlies, quarterlys, annuals, self-inspections.
Don't get me wrong I like being a Sgt, but I'm not interested in going any higher.
But good luck to you if you are, happy studying. P.S $98k is base it doesnt include longevity, holiday pay, and night diff (if you work 1st or 3rd platoon) Sgts make a nice salary, not to mention Sgt Ot rate is 80 an hour at top pay. I'm good salary wise.

I was just looking at the list...there are less than 200 names left on this list with another 80 going in in another 2 weeks! that's basically a little over 100 left!

The likely hood of this November class going in early is beginning to seem unlikely. What are we hearing?

I dont hear any word on that. Seems highly unlikely. There was never a sgt class with promotions up front

Now that I gave up on studying for the Lt exam on the slim chance I'd be in that upfront promotion class, I hope there isn't so I can say "see, good thing I didn't waste my time studying" haha

I think you're wrong NoHook.... I know a SGT who in fact was promoted upfront. After the exam in 08, a class was put in Sept/08 around 75 and when they were promoted at the end of the month another 75 was promoted upfront with that class and entered BMOC as SGTs for October. I'm not saying they are going to promote 75 upfront, all i am saying it has been done.

P.S. Believe in Brat!!!!! If what she says its going to happen.....ITS GOING TO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is the scoop .............AGAIN  !!!!!!

They are doing 80 (entering BMOC on Oct 3rd) to be graduated on Oct 28th

They are promoting about 30-40 UPFRONT on the same day (Oct 28th) and they will go thru BMOC the following weeks.

The number they are shooting for is .......to fill the vacancies of Sgt.

They will let those last 30-40 know ahead of time if they are going to get promoted giving them ample time to get their uniforms in line and to file for the exam.  They will be given handwritten admission cards.

Thank you for your always accurate information, definitely a big help.  Do you know how far in advance they will let those 30-40 people know?  I might be in that group or I might be bumped back to the last class (which I'm assuming graduates 12/23 if they go in right after these upfront people)

I'm hoping to be in this "Pre-Promotion Class". And I have to say this. If they were hoping to get more people to potentially pass the LT test, It was definitely the wrong way to go about it. By the time I found out I even had a chance of being made in time for the test. It was 17 weeks after the announcement. Hardly encouraging that countless Sgt.'s would have that type of jump on me, studying not to mention they have real world experience being a boss. I initially tried studying and debated on going through with my best effort, but the motivation quickly dissipated as my eligibility is not a definite and the prospect of spending money on cram classes being a waste seemed unwise. So my question is this, why not just post-pone the LT test. It wouldn't be the first time they've done that to get a max # of applicants? What's the big rush?

That is wishful thinking but it's a good point too. The old Lt list is still at least 5 months away from being expired so what's the rush to give it so early?

This is exactly what I was thinking.  They won't postpone it, though.  They don't care.

Brat, what's your guess/estimate for "ample time" notice for the test?

There is no time period that the job should promise to tell you in advance.  Some people had heard rumors that they would be able to take this exam, others not.  Either way, the job is allowing you to take it.  Some opportunity is still better than NO opportunity to take and pass this exam.

Take the 5 weeks you have left (if you feel that you will have the opportunity) and study like a madman.

also.............

real world sgt experience has nothing to do with passing a lt exam.........book world stuff is what you need to pass

there is also FREE study material out there..........no need to spend a small fortune.

Let's be realistic, this test is not, get a 70 you're in. You need to score well to have a chance of getting a list # low enough to be able to get promoted. Power to those that are able to study that hard in just a few weeks. (With out being concrete if you'll even have that opportunity). I'm just not one of those people...

I agree. Anything below an 81/82 wouldnt get you anywhere. I studied for 2 months for Sgt Exam and got a 75. I have 1 month left and need an 85 lol.
Ill wait for 2014. By that time Ill have 14 years, a Lt. with 14 years, I'll take it.

That's not necessarily true. You don't know how everyone is gonna do. It could be a small list with only several hundred passing and then e ermine would get made. It depends how many people pass. With only about 2,500 filed for Lt exam it could very well be a small list.

Really 2500? Is that right? Sounds a little low. 10% passing rate would make for another exam sooner...lol it gives me more of a reason to wait for the next one

Skellgel, everything is still the same. Our graduation is set for Wednesday the 28th. I'm guessing since the October class goes in on the 3rd, the finest will be coming down either 9/28 or 9/29. You will be assigned to bmoc as of 10/1, meaning you will be off 10/1 and 10/2 and your first day will be 10/3. Don't forget business attire! BTW we will be back in the building 10/7 so that day you guys might not be at the academy. More than likely outside training. Nothing has changed. And unless the pc changes his mind, you guys are good to go!

The upfront promotion class is not set in stone yet, its something they would like to do. The possibility of it happening is good but realistically be prepared for a October 31 class.

Care to elaborate? As this goes against most of what people have been hearing...and what was said to guys going through BMOC in both the August and September classes...

Is it just your hunch? or do you have a good source?

DV, nobody is saying the 30-40 is set in stone. They highly believe that they will put in a small class in right before the LT exam but it comes down to how many more sgt spots the department needs to fill. They might have over estimated and only need 20 more sgts (after the october class) or they might have underestimated and actually need 50. I think they are going with 30 to 40 as a really safe number. I really believe that class will be in the end of October so if you have a chance of being promoted around that time, take the opportunity and study.

we hit the test right, with the new bill signed of pension protection less sgts will be leaving the job. People were worried about rolling the dice with the pension after 20, but now as long as you dont get convicted of a felony your good to go.

Its good and its bad, it makes climbing the ladder a lot harder because the Special assignment Lieutenant who is the Commanding Officer of the toilet paper unit at 1PP is not gonna leave. Why leave a spot that you do nothing and make 40 hours a month on OT and probably gonna make 180k for the year wanna leave. VEry frustrating

I was a little concerned about this too, but logically speaking EVERYONE will eventually reach the age of forced retirement, so everything will fall back into place then, in theory that is lol.

I don't think the new pension protection bill is going to change things much. Let's be honest most people who are bosses in a kush gig would probably stay bill or not. It's not going to change for those bosses who hate where they are maybe cause of the area they work or the co-workers they work with. They're still going to say screw it, why stay I'm out. Pension bill or not I still plan to leave at 20, the job is not getting any easier, I can't even imagine what's to come in the future.

At this point whatever rumor is heard in the academy/your contact must be relative accurate, so what's the latest on the late October/November class? 80 for October and October/November--promotion upfront??

Damn. If they decide not to promote upfront (and 80 are still going in next week) I wonder how they will split the remaining 120 or so names left. If they will still do 40 for November and 80 for December, or vice versa. I hate not knowing. If the December class goes in on schedule they will graduate BMOC on Friday 12/23 and have Christmas Eve and Christmas off for the last time in a long time, so it might not be bad to be in that last class hahaha
